$16m hit to our economy BY SUE NEWMAN

The Ashburton District’s worker shortage will this year cost $16 million in lost economic opportunities; by 2030 this will rise to $105 million. Currently 503 more people are needed to fill job vacancies that would allow businesses to grow. That number will rise by around
15 per cent to 589 in 12 years, but the value of those jobs will increase significantly, an economic analyst and researcher says. Christina Leung yesterday presented a labour force plan report to Ashburton District councillors and left them in little doubt that the true extent and impact of the district’s labour shortage was much larger than it appeared be-
cause businesses were choosing not to hire as many staff as they needed because there was a lack of suitable staff to hire. Business owners were surveyed over several months by New Zealand Institute of Economic research staff. Ashburton ranks sixth of 66 territorial authorities in quality as a place to do business, but when
it came to quality of living, it dropped to 12th, Leung said. “The quality of doing business drives demand but the district’s quality of living is not meeting that. “This helps explain the labour shortages prevalent in the district; the number of people who want to live in Ashburton falls short of this demand for labour.”
Closing the gap between labour demand and supply would require an improvement in the quality of living in Ashburton to attract and retain workers in the district.
