Info building to be sold off By Sue Newman

MOTORING

Ashburton’s East Street information centre building will be sold to the highest bidder and moved off the land that has been its home for many years. That sale, however, could be up to two years away, with its owner, the Ashburton District Council, opting to offer a short-term lease on the building to a group of businessmen who plan to establish an information base in the building.

It will be known as the Information Hub. Yesterday Ashburton District councillors had to decide the future of the building and whether in the short term they should agree to the Information Hub team becoming its tenants. They agreed to both the lease and to the eventual sale and removal of the building, but those decisions will see Experience Mid Canterbury (EMC), currently occupying part of the building, looking for a new home.

The new group and EMC had tried to reach an agreement over a joint tenancy, but with the hub wanting to target revenue from EMC’s clients, they decided they could not work in the same space. The tourism group will now be given three months to find new premises, but it will be doing so with help from the council.
