Mid Canterbury motorists need to wake up to their appalling driving habits, says Ashburton’s top cop Phil Dean. Dean was commenting following police issuing 20 infringement notices in the past few weeks to drivers following too closely behind other motorists on the Northern Motorway in Christchurch. there were not more fatal crashes on State Highway 1 both north and south of Ashburton, considering the high number of motorists ignoring the two-second rule. He also took a swipe at illegal use of cellphones while driving and the high speeds motorist were travelling either side of Ashburton. And the worst offenders were generally people travelling as part of their daily routine, such as business people, workers and farmers.

“The behaviour of the drivers on that road is appalling,” Deans said. “I’m constantly stopping people and issuing notices and also issuing warnings about following distances. “We all learned the two-second rule as children, yet it seems to be falling on deaf ears.”
