Vandals rack up $100k bill BY SUE NEWMAN
SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Ashburton District ratepayers are likely to foot a bill that could hit $100,000 this year in clean up work when public property is wrecked in vandalism sprees. The Ashburton District Council is so concerned at the level of vandalism around the district chief executive Andrew Dalziel is now keeping a running tally of repair costs; previously these figures were absorbed in the general maintenance budget. Over the past three months alone, more than
$3000 worth of damage has occurred in the Ashburton domain to shrubs, lawns and signs and more than $8000 has been spent to repair damage to toilet blocks in Ashburton. For the past year, ratepayers paid out $4500 for repairs to Methven’s toilets and $8000 for damage caused to toilets in Rakaia. Road signs are also a big cost item in repairs, Mr Dalziel said, running out at more than $17,000 last year. As part of its anti-vandalism drive, the council spends almost
$40,000 a year on close circuit television cameras (CCTV) in Ashburton at sites including the clock tower, public toilets, Friendship Lane, town centre, water feature and the library. Rakaia residents got serious in their anti-vandalism campaign several years ago, setting up a residents’ patrol that runs seven nights of the week, community association chair Neil Pluck said. “That’s really put a top on things. People know the community patrol is about with two people on board and they know
who is out and about every evening,” he said. The community funded the patrol car and foots the bill for on-going costs. Not only does the patrol keep an eye on community property, but residents can pay $25 a year to have members drive past their property at least once a night and shine a spotlight across the gardens and house. “It’s a pain in the butt to have to do this because of vandalism but at the end of the day, it’s a small price to pay for the results we get,” Mr Pluck said.

Methven has also almost stamped out vandalism issues in its public toilets by installing CCTV cameras in the town centre. Prior to their installation, community board chair Liz McMillan said vandalism was on-going and while it may have been relatively minor in nature the costs mounted in repair jobs. “The little things just kept adding up. We made it very public that we were putting the cameras up and it seems to have been the ultimate deterrent,” she said.
