Education system in crisis By Sue Newman

Schools in the Ashburton District are at a tipping point when it comes to finding sufficient teachers to meet classroom needs. While most schools currently have a full complement of staff, vacancies are now often attracting just one, or even no applicants and that is just one symptom, among many, of an education system in crisis teachers said as they
took strike action yesterday over failed pay and condition claims. More than 300 teachers, parents and students from the district’s primary and secondary schools chanted and waved placards as they marched along Ashburton’s West Street during a day of strike action called to highlight their frustrations over stalled negotiations with the government. This is the second time in six months primary teachers have
gone on strike and yesterday they were joined by the district’s secondary teachers, effectively closing all schools. Allenton principal Bruce Tilby said that, while a resolution to the stalemate between the teaching industry and the government was the desired outcome, that didn’t appear likely any time soon. “In June last year when we first met, if there had been a genuine attempt to address the issues, if
they’d said we’ll do our best to resolve issues, we wouldn’t be here today.” Schools, teachers and principals were under immense pressure, particularly around pastoral care and learning support. The challenges teachers were facing were increasingly complex, Tilby said. “I do think teachers need to be adequately recompensed but equally, resources need to be in
place to allow us to work with all students, to teach properly. “The impact of societal issues has really come to a head and as a school we’re at the frontline of trying to sort out these issues.” The issues were in all schools at all levels from pre-school to Year 13, he said.
