Traditionally unwanted gifts were surreptitiously hidden away to be re-gifted after a suitable period of time. These days such discretion has gone out the window; Boxing Day is the now the day to sell those unwanted Christmas presents on online auction sites like Trade Me. Ashburton engineer Robbie Shefford was discussing the trend with his brother on Saturday, when the idea of selling an “unwanted” $100 note came up. “I put it up on Trade Me with a $20 reserve and $150 buy now price as a joke – and it took off,” Mr Shefford said. He was prepared to take a hit on the auction, but by yesterday morning bidding had peaked at $5150, and the sale
had sparked a media frenzy. Word of Mr Shefford’s unwanted gift has now spread around the world, and he has been kept busy with interviews. Yesterday, Trade Me administrators stepped in to weed out some of the larger bids, in doubt of their authenticity, shaving the figure down to $295. Prior to that a bidder going by the name of Jackson93 was holding the lead with $5100 yesterday morning, before being pipped at the post by poppaelf, who upped the ante by $50. As it transpired Jackson93’s threeyear-old child had done a spot of bidding, encouraged by older siblings. Mr Shefford was not surprised by Trade Me’s actions – he too was skeptical about the big punters in his auction. However the move did not deter
those determined to nab the now famous hundy. Within a couple of hours the price had climbed back over the $500 mark. Trade Me intervened once more, knocking the figure back to $157 at 3pm yesterday afternoon. Over the course of the auction 92 people have made bids on the note, 3089 have added it to their watchlist and the page has been viewed by about 165,000. In the course of the auction Mr Shefford has answered hundreds of questions but has chosen to ignore or remove a lot of the “haters”.
