Hinds burglar sentenced A young man who was part of a burglary ring stealing cigarettes worth more than $40,000 from rural businesses was sentenced to nine months supervision and 125 hours community work when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday. Robert Wikohika, 18, must also

pay reparation of $2250, his share of the losses dealt to the Canterbury service stations and cafes after insurance claims. Wikohika admitted five charges of burglary and was amongst those who broke into the Glentunnel dairy and a Hororata service station on February 12 last

year; a Leeston dairy and service station on February 25 and the Hinds Tavern on March 2. The Ashburton man was among four offenders who went to Hinds on March 2. They parked outside the tavern at 3am then smashed a lock on the main doors to get inside.

They took a standalone ATM machine, containing $5000 cash, and two cash registers and $300 cash. In most of the other cases, the thieves smashed their way in and removed tobacco cabinets, taking cigarettes worth $41,247 that they later sold.

The burglaries were committed by a number of offenders, though only some have been identified, including Wikohika and alleged co-offender Lancer James, 32.
