New incentives to bring skilled migrants into the regions will have huge benefits for Mid Canterbury, according to the district’s mayor. Measures to encourage skilled migrants and businesses to head to the regions were announced by Prime Minister John Key at the National Party conference in Auckland. It was hoped the new measures would give a much-needed boost to local economies by increasing bonus points used to determine whether residency requests should be approved or denied. regional and provincial levels. Administrator Rene Artz said New Zealand had a “broad brush immigration policy” and he wanted the Government to look at it from a regional perspective. Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said the new move could go some way to reducing an increasing labour shortage in Mid Canterbury. “It could have a very positive impact on a district like Ashburton.” Skilled workers who took jobs in the regions would have bonus points bumped up from an extra 10 to an extra 30 points.
