A service that offers face-to-face advice for the community across a range of sexual and reproductive health issues is withdrawing its services from Ashburton next month. Family Planning has been based in Ashburton for several years, holding weekly clinics, but those clinics will end in late June, with the organisation’s national director of operations Kirsty Walsh saying the decision was made on the grounds of financial viability. “Unfortunately our funding is limited and our target is around providing clinics in areas of high need,” she said. Numbers attending the Ashburton clinic had varied and there had been times when staff travelled from Christchurch for appointments to find those booked did not turn up. “It’s been a very difficult decision for us to make,” Walsh said. All 1500 clients have been contacted about the closure and they will be provided with information and assisted in transitioning to a general practice or to another provider, she said. Ashburton clients will also have the option of using the telephone consulting service. This involves making an appointment for staff to contact them by phone at a prearranged
time. This can be done through the Family Planning website. “There will be a range of things we can do by phone and consultation with a nurse and there will still be the option of clinics in Timaru or Christchurch,” Walsh said. Clients using the phone consultancy service would be able to receive advice and they would also be able to have prescriptions faxed through to their local pharmacy. “Our aim is equity of access and choice and people will still be able to talk to a person in a clinic, but it will just be over the phone. As they are in our clinics, our services are confidential and non-judgemental”. Family Planning staff will be in Ashburton on Monday and will have information on the closure for clients. All clients will be provided with the organisation’s 0800 number to ensure they can make contact readily with staff. GP practices and stakeholders in Ashburton have all been contacted. Family Planning offers help with contraception, STI testing and treatment, cervical screening, pregnancy testing, abortion referrals, PMS and menopause, HPV vaccinations, and advice and support for other sexual and reproductive health issues. It works with people of any gender, age, nationality or sexual orientation.
