Serving up a liquor lesson Using teenagers to help educate their parents on a lack of liquor law knowledge is a big focus for health educators, who describe parents as not often knowing even the basics. Health promoter Tania Scott spoke with senior students at Ashburton College on Wednesday about liquor laws, and requirements for those intending to provide alcohol. The topics covered included express consent needed to be given from parents before alcohol could be provided to those under-18, and around what anyone intending to supply alcohol at a party. “Parents also don’t tend to have the best knowledge on these things so if
these guys can go home and tell their parents,” she said. “A lot of parents don’t know the basics of what anyone supplying alcohol needs to do.” Anyone intending on supplying alcohol, whether they are a licensed premises or not, must have water or non-alcoholic beverages and food readily available, and a transport plan in place. “If the plan is to have everyone sleep in the lounge, that is an option, or if you call them a taxi or provide a phone for them to call a taxi, that is an option,” she said. “Just as long as you are making sure anyone who has been drinking isn’t going to get in a vehicle (and drive).” Scott said recently released statistics had shown that the messages had start-

ed to get through to those aged between 15 and 17. “It is great news and that is part of the problem that so much we see is bad news about alcohol so for there to be good news is great,” she said. “That is why I got the media down here because we want to get those messages through to the parents as well.” To add an engaging element to the talk, students from each of the college’s four houses were tasked with creating a mocktail in four minutes, which were taste tested by teacher Claire Bubb.
