A 58-year-old man threatening to use a firearm resulted in the Ashburton District Council building closing to the public yesterday morning. The threat was reported to police around 11.30am and the man was soon arrested at a residential address, before the council offices reopened at about 12.15pm. Ashburton police senior sergeant Scott
Banfield said an air rifle was also seized at the address where the man was arrested. Ashburton District Council community relations manager Vincie Billante said the situation began when a building official was threatened by a customer while on site doing an inspection at a Cavendish Street address. “A customer made a serious threat which the police (took) under advisement, and they advised us, as a precautionary measure, to close the building,”
Ms Billante said. The building official returned to the council offices and reported the incident, Ashburton District Council chief executive Andrew Dalziel said. “It’s very upsetting to be threatened in such a way, so we are just pleased that he is safe,” Mr Dalziel said.
