Plastic straws on the black list BY SUE NEWMAN

High score, wrong result P24

Plastic drinking straws could be set to disappear from Ashburton’s hospitality scene if the district follows Christchurch’s lead in pushing for more environmentally friendly options to be used. Earlier this year Ashburton’s district councillors showed their support for the plastic straw ban when they put the council on the list of local authorities that supported the development of a plan to eliminate the use of single use plastic bags and plastic straws. More than 95 per cent of local authorities have given their support to the plas-

tics ban. Ashburton’s hospitality businesses could be ahead of the game in making the switch from plastic straws. Phat Duck owners Nigel and Amanda Joyce have removed plastic products from their restaurant and bar. Containers for takeaway meals, straws with drinks, they’re all biodegradable. Making the change was a no brainer, Amanda Joyce said, and the new products were introduced as part of the restaurant’s rebranding. Yes, there’s an additional cost to going down the environmentally friendly path, she said, but it’s a move the business is committed to.

“Our customers love it, the feedback has been really positive.” The downside of paper straws is that they do not last as long in a drink and with children in particular, one drink might require more than one straw, she said. Joyce believes the cost of non-plastic straws will gradually drop as demand grows. And it is clear demand is growing, she said, because suppliers are struggling to keep up.
