30 years of A&P passion BY TIM CRONSHAW

For 30-odd years Tim Lovett has worked hard with a small team of volunteers to have the grounds spotless for the start of the Ashburton A&P Show. Today is little different, except expectations have risen steeply. “We are amateurs running a

professional show and everybody’s expectations are of a high standard. That’s the main difference from 30 years ago,’’ said Lovett, a dairy farmer on 400 hectares at Newlands. “It’s our business at stake … and it’s all about entertaining people today.’’ The pull of the show keeps him coming back as a volunteer. A

sharemilker on the family’s 1100cow farm allows him to commit his energy to the event. His wife Beth, who frees up his time by running the calves, tolerates his passion. “It’s good to get off the farm and do other things because it’s healthy for you. I get out and meet like-minded people.’’

Show volunteering is a family affair with son Matt taking a week off work for the event, Beth helps out in the grain and seed section and other son Sam used to be a willing helper. Lovett doesn’t count the hours he puts in helping to prepare the grounds for the show. The team starts with spraying the grounds

a few months before the turnstiles start spinning. The reality is as soon as the show is over they start planning the next event.
