FULL STORY
The heat might have gone out of the Ashburton District’s economy during the first three months of this year, but it still remained on the right side of the ledger. Economic data prepared by Infometrics for Grow Mid Canterbury puts the district’s growth at a low of just 1.6 per cent for the quarter, but those figures have to be balanced
against a long run of strong growth, says Grow Mid Canterbury chief executive Rob Brawley. “Despite the low dairy payout we’re still getting economic growth. For the past 10 years we’ve had 4 per cent average growth; that can’t continue for ever. We had 13 per cent one year and you can’t get better than that.” That growth had slowed should come as no surprise because the warning signs had been there for some time
as dairy prices dipped, Mr Brawley said. “We’ve been signalling for a year to expect a slow-down; there has to be with the reduced spend, but just because dairy farmers are spending less, that doesn’t mean there are not still opportunities for business.”
