Violence talks on agenda BY DAISY HUDSON
DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Ashburton’s mayor will hold talks with local organisations following violent disorder in the town’s CBD. Speaking to the Guardian yesterday, Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay confirmed he would invite several local groups to discuss the issue with him. The planned discussions fol-
low a series of incidents of disorderly behaviour in Ashburton’s CBD, including a largescale brawl that left several people injured, including a police officer. While Mr McKay said no approach had been made to specific organisations yet, Ashburton licensees and police spoken to by the Guardian yesterday supported the idea. Mr McKay said no
date had been set for the meeting yet. “It’s getting a small group of people together to work out what can be done in the future, if any new initiatives are required or not, and to then go to the appropriate bodies, whether that is council or some of the present groups,” Mr McKay said. “I have made no decision on what the outcome of the meeting will be.”
The Print Room bar coowner Emma Jackson said she supported the idea of a meeting between interested parties about the problem, rather than assigning blame. “It’s really a community issue, rather than a licensed premise issue, or a police issue,” she said. “Everybody needs to come together and work out some solutions.”
Miss Jackson said the disorder affected the whole community. “You’ve got local business owners, you’ve got licensees, you’ve got police, health, plus the community in general, and the taxi companies, who all have a part to play in it,” she said.
