Police nail shop burglars BY ERIN TASKER

ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Two men have been arrested for the burglaries of two Ashburton shops, taking the total number of arrests in relation to a string of commercial burglaries to three. The latest arrests were in relation to break-ins at Lizzy’s Dairy in Tinwald and Goods 2 U earlier this month, and came just days after a man was ar-

rested in relation to a substantial burglary at the Ashburton Trading Society (ATS) on December 12. A 27-year-old locally employed man was arrested in relation to the ATS burglary, in which around $3000 worth of clothing – mainly Swanndri – was taken. Ashburton Police senior sergeant Scott Banfield said inquiries into the Lizzy’s Dairy and

Goods 2 U burglaries had led police staff from the Ashburton CIB to two men – one a 17-yearold from Timaru and the other a 19-year-old from Ashburton. Adding to the successful outcomes for police this week was the apprehension of a suspect in relation to a string of car thefts, and the identification of another. Mr Banfield said five cars had been stolen in Mid Canterbury,

and another three in Selwyn, over the past couple of weeks. Some of those cars had been later found burnt out and police from both Ashburton and Selwyn had been working on the cases. One man had been arrested in relation to those incidents, and as associate had been identified and that arrest was pending, Mr Banfield said. “Basically everything that’s

happened in the last month we have had a result in, and that’s great,” Mr Banfield said. While the arrests were good news, Mr Banfield said the incidents were reminders to people to take care when it came to their home security, particularly if they were going away. “If you are going away let people know, and lock all of your sheds. Make life as difficult as you can for any opportunists.” Ph 03 307 7900 to subscribe!
