A 90-year-old woman has died in Ashburton Hospital following a car crash near Tinwald on Saturday afternoon. The driver, the vehicle’s sole occupant, veered off the side of Maronan Road and collided with a power pole at around 4.30pm,
after she suffered a medical event. Hinds Chief Fire Officer Dave Kingsbury was among emergency services to attend the scene and said the woman did not appear to be “substantially injured” in the crash, but was unconscious. Her vehicle had not sustained severe damage and EA Networks were not required to turn off pow-
er to the area, although they attended the scene and checked out the power pole as a precautionary measure. Kingsbury said firefighters stayed with the woman until St John Ambulance staff took her to hospital and police took over management of the scene at around 5.30pm.

A police spokesperson reported on Sunday that the woman had later died, but said it was not due to injuries sustained in the crash. The call-out on Saturday afternoon was one of a number over the course of the weekend for Mid Canterbury emergency services. Starting on Friday night and through to Sunday night, they at-
tended six call-outs including car accidents and vegetation fires. On Saturday morning a man was taken to Ashburton Hospital to be checked for burns after fumes ignited while a racing car was being refuelled. Static electricity is believed to have sparked the fire ball at Triangle Garage.
