The Government has money on the table to encourage workers to relocate to Ashburton. Prime Minister John Key said the $3000 relocation allowance promised to workers moving to Christchurch for rebuild projects was also available to those who took up employment opportunities in Ashburton. Mr Key was in town to visit South Island Seed Dressing (SISD) yesterday to get a firsthand look at the scale of the country’s largest small seed dressing plant.
Company director Brent Clarke said difficulties recruiting staff was stymying growth in the district’s multifarious small seed industry. Efforts to lure staff from other areas had not proved effective. “People know this is the place to grow seed – the bigger issue is to encourage people to relocate here,” Mr Key said. “They (SISD) need more staff to grow, they are advertising on the West Coast, where there have been redundancies, but there has been a very low uptake. There is a very low level of unemployment here and the $3000 we
promised for Christchurch also applies to Ashburton.” While aware of the district’s agricultural reputation, Mr Key conceded to being “surprised” by the scale of SISD’s operation. “It’s much bigger than I would have thought,” he said. “I didn’t realise it had so much domination on a world scale, particularly with carrots, and in China and other Asian markets as well.”
