Vandals wreak havoc after dark BY KATIE TODD

A group of Ashburton neighbours are fuming after vandals turned their streets into a path of destruction at the weekend. At least five cars had their windows smashed in the small hours of Saturday while parked on Moore Street and Dobson Street. No items were understood to be taken from the vehicles, however Janie Peneha-Wehipeihana was one of the victims and said she was “majorly pissed off”. Her husband had stepped outside at 7am to see the rear window of their car completely shattered, and neither she nor her husband could fathom what the
vandals were hoping to achieve. She uses the car to get to her night shift at work and to take her children to school and said she is concerned it could happen again. But neighbour Thomas Spark said residents had a “fair idea of who was responsible”, and he was confident they would be caught. Security cameras had been operating in the area at the time the windowsmashing occurred and the vandals had left their blood on one of the cars. But what doesn’t change is the cost which residents are now facing to replace their windows, Spark said. “It really pisses me off, to be honest.” Police confirmed that were also in-
vestigating the incidents, and following lines of enquiry. They requested that anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the areas overnight Friday to Saturday contacts Constable Richard Glennie on 03 307 8400. Information can also be given anonymously via 0800 555 111. Meanwhile, the court charges are stacking up quickly for three individuals identified in relation to a number of thefts from vehicles and homes earlier this year.
