Some Ashburton bars, restaurants and cafes say sales could drop if the Ashburton District Council introduces more smokefree rules for the central business district (CBD). Smokefree Mid Canterbury wanted the council to consider introducing more smokefree rules as part of its re-
design of the town centre, but members of the Ashburton Alcohol Accord – 14 licensed premises who work together to promote the safe sale and supply of alcohol – say more regulation could lead to reduced sales and job losses. Cr Russell Ellis said smokefree rules were not part of the CBD plans and the council would consult further with the community if it went down that path.

Accord spokesperson Sarah Davidson said the group of licensed businesses had been working together for nine years and met monthly with police, liquor licensing and Ashburton’s Community Alcohol and Drug Service to talk about issues.
