Mid Canterbury criminals have been warned: the district’s police have them firmly in their sights in an operation that has only just begun. Police confirmed recent raids targeting people suspected of being linked to the drug trade were just the first in a push that will soon enter its next phase. Operation Webster’s next phase will run much longer than a single day in an approach to tackling crime that police want to be successful and “sustainable”. Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield, of Ashburton police, yesterday confirmed planning would soon start for a new and sustained focus on the district’s criminal groups. “We are planning the next phase in the next couple of weeks,” Mr Banfield said. “It will just be, again, targeting criminal groups and individuals that we have identified and providing that community reassurance. “The big long-term thing for us is to make sure it’s sustainable and we will run these kinds of operations in with the likes of the alcohol ones we’ve run recently.”

Meanwhile, police yesterday said they were looking for a person of interest following a series of drugs raids on Mid Canterbury properties on Wednesday. Search warrants were executed at eight addresses and the raids resulted in 13 arrests and 44 charges. Four of the 13 people arrested on Wednesday appeared in the Christchurch District Court yesterday and all were bailed with no plea to appear in the Ashburton District Court. The remaining nine people arrested will also appear in the Ashburton District Court. Mr Banfield said Operation Webster was a result of months of hard work and planning by police, assisted by information received from the community. People often offered information to the police and because nothing happened straight away, they assumed they’d done nothing with it. But often information led to, and formed part of, a bigger picture like that which became clearer with Wednesday’s raids, he said.
