The Methven Community Board’s chairman is urging residents who oppose a new bottle shop in the town, to officially object to the proposal. “This is the time for people to have their say,” Dan McLaughlin said. The Ashburton District Council has publicly notified an application from Nekita Enterprises Limited for an offlicence for the proposed bottle shop, to be located at a site on Main Street currently occupied by the town’s Red Cross opportunity shop. The objection period closes February 3. There has been much discussion on social media regarding the application. Already the town has two supermarkets which sell alcohol, and a bottle shop at the Brown Pub.

McLaughlin said any concerns aired on social media would not be taken into account by the council, and he urged those with genuine concerns to lodge an objection through official channels. He himself did not believe Methven needed another liquor outlet, due to both the potential social consequences and retail competition it would present. “There’s only so many people in Methven at the end of the day,” McLaughlin said. Detractors on social media have focused on the business competition such an outlet would provide, and raised the spectre of youth alcohol harm with a park nearby. One pointed out that Methven had almost 20 licensed businesses, and asked if the town was “jostling for

booze capital of New Zealand, or to be the close knit rural/tourist community many thought we are?” Some have been supportive, with one saying the town should “welcome all new businesses who are willing to give things a go”. The council yesterday reported no objections had yet been received to Nekita Enterprise’s application. Company director Harjit Singh had not got back to the Guardian by deadline. Nekita’s application states the nature of the business as a Super Liquor store, however, the Super Liquor master franchisor was unable to confirm yesterday that it had received an application to operate a store in Methven. It is understood Nekita already operates two Super Liquor outlets in Ashburton.
