The cause of a fire which all but destroyed a well-known home on the eastern coast yesterday morning was unable to be determined by fire investigators. The house, which sits overlooking the ocean in Upper Hakatere, was left a smouldering shell on Monday morning following the fire which began on the top floor of the two-storey home. Local residents alerted emergency services to the blaze around 6.30am yesterday morning and two engines and two tankers, plus extra firefighters, rushed to the scene to find the building well ablaze. Firefighters remained there until shortly after 9am, at which point the scene was handed over to fire investigators who spent most of the remaining

morning trying to determine the cause of the blaze. A police presence was also notable throughout the course of the process. No-one is believed to have been in the building when the fire occurred, although this could not be confirmed by either police or Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). Fire risk management officer, Bevan Findlay, said the nature of the blaze and the fact it was largely centered in the top floor of the building made it a difficult fire to investigate and ultimately determine a cause. “I’ve had a bit of a dig around there and haven’t really been able to find anything decisive,” Findlay said yesterday afternoon. “There were a couple of possible ideas on what the cause might have been and

they may come clear in time, but at the moment we’ve had to classify it as undetermined.” Findlay said that it was common for fires to be labelled as undetermined in instances where safety was a concern when investigating. “It’s been a pretty intense fire, the entire second floor has pretty much all but been destroyed and I had a couple of concerns around how I could safely get to some points of the second floor. “In those situations it’s a case of weighing up whether taking that risk is going to net you a result in the investigation.”
