Santa parade saved BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

An 11th hour gesture of goodwill by a local business has saved Ashburton’s Santa parade. Organiser Carol Johns was within 24 hours of pulling the pin on this year’s parade because she couldn’t find a sponsor, when Hyundai Mid Canterbury manager Gregg Kennedy stepped up

to the plate. He saved the day by offering to foot the bill for the parade and that, together with the Ashburton District Council paying road closure costs and the now defunct Ashburton Business Association gifting the parade its reindeer and sleigh, means Christmas will now come to town, Ms Johns said. Securing a sponsor might

guarantee the parade is held, but its success is still in the hands of the community, she said. “We want to step our parade up a notch this year and that means we need more people taking part. Our parade will only be as good as the people who get in behind and support it.” A radio appeal for people to sponsor fantasy costumes netted

a good response and Ms Johns hopes more businesses will come forward with the $125 needed to start building up costume stocks that can be used each year. “If we could get 20 of these that would be fantastic, but even with 10 I’d be happy and if we were able to add 10 more each year, that would be great,” she said. In addition, Variety Thea-

tre’s Party People has offered to open its vast costume stocks up for the parade, free of charge. Having big stocks of costumes available opened the door for anyone to dress up and take part in the parade, she said.
