Representatives of a wide range of Ashburton’s sporting codes have put their hands up to be part of a think tank on the best use of land around the EA Networks centre. Last month the Ashburton District Council unveiled a draft development plan for eight hectares of land to the west of the centre that tagged most of the land for use by rugby and softball, but at a forum this week, sporting groups made it clear they wanted the users to be much wider, Sport Canterbury’s Ashburton manager Jan Cochrane said. “They wanted to have open discussions about future developments and
this was an opportunity for people to share their thoughts and to respond to what the council has put before us,” she said. People wanted to see open discussion between the council and different sporting codes about their needs growing and changing in the future, Cochrane said. Discussion was around both the greenfields development and an extension to the stadium. “It was a very positive meeting and everyone understood that the community was a really important element in planning. It was about moving forward and opening the lines of communication for the future. This is what the sports groups are being asked to identify.”

People at the meeting understood the council had significant commitments already in terms of large projects such as the new civic centre, but they wanted to ensure that when it came to development in and around the stadium they were part of the planning process, Cochrane said. There was every indication the council was open to input from the sports groups and people were asked to come back with ideas for the next forum in February, she said.

Ashburton irrigators told to mind their spray With irrigation season under way Environment Canterbury is reminding irrigators to be aware of where their water is going and irrigate the grass – not the road. Environment Canterbury Ashburton Zone manager Janine Holland said nearly 20 complaints have been received in the past few weeks from local people, so irrigators need to adjust their aim. “Irrigation on to roads, particularly gravel roads, is not only a waste of water but also has the potential to create safety issues for motorists. It is the surprise element and the force of the water that could easily startle a motorist. “Our Ashburton team has been receiving an increasing number of calls and our locally-based
water zone officers have been responding to these on a case-bycase basis. “Irrigation consent-holders are responsible for the use of water that is applied to their properties and while it can be difficult on windy days, irrigators must monitor the use of their water and operate within the conditions of their consent,” Holland said. Ashburton District Council roading manager Brian Fauth said irrigation water can cause significant damage to roading infrastructure. “From a structural perspective, water is a road’s worst enemy. Irrigation watering the road can damage the underlying structure of our rural roads, particularly unsealed ones.
“When you consider the time and money that has gone into repairing flood-damaged roads from the heavy rain events we’ve had this year, it is concerning that there are some irrigators that are needlessly putting water on the roads and contributing to that damage,” Fauth said. Irrigation New Zealand chief executive Andrew Curtis said the two main culprits for water going over-boundary were the end guns on pivot irrigators and travelling irrigators set up too close to roads. “Watering on to roads creates a significant safety hazard, so it’s really important for irrigators to ensure they water within their property boundaries. “My advice is to ensure end
guns are set and operating correctly and regularly checked. When you set up your travelling irrigator always have a set-back distance from the road. “Aside from the safety issue, people don’t like seeing water being wasted by being sprayed on to roads. “Farmers who irrigate do so under strict regulatory regimes so it’s important they justify their use of water by being efficient and responsible with it,” Curtis said. Anyone experiencing spray on the road that is clearly coming from an irrigation system should contact Environment Canterbury on 0800 324-636. If there is immediate danger to road users they should contact the police.

We have to get the best results for the community.” Council service delivery group manager Neil McCann said the draft plan was developed to give the council a rough indication of the costs involved in turning unused land into playing fields. Costs were needed for the development to be in the mix for councillors when they looked at their long term spending plans. “There are no real details, it’s just a concept, what could be done with the area. It’s a concept and if it prompts other sporting groups to discuss it, that’s great and if we develop this further then we’ll look at what other sporting codes needs are,” he said. With the EA Networks Centre likely to be on the list for discussion when councillors looked at their long term plan next year, costs for all possible projects needed to be on the table, McCann said. Staff had an idea of the cost of extending the covered courts, of a hydroslide and an extra pool, but it needed some idea of the playing field development costs, he said. “This is just putting a peg in the ground, saying this is what we could do, but it’s also about getting council to start looking at the land that would be needed and at the land that could be available, who owns what.” When it came time to make submissions on the long term plan, McCann encouraged sports groups who wanted a similar outcome such as more covered courts, to make a combined submission. The original playing field concept was for a staged development that included a range of sports, including a velodrome, bowling green and hockey turf built on land that extended through to the Allenton Rugby Club grounds in the west.

Within 18 months a new hotel will be open for business in central Ashburton. Design work for the 75-room four-star hotel has been completed and planning on the $40 million project is well under way. Construction is expected to start next year. The hotel development is being facilitated for Scenic Hotel group by Eastfield Investments. It will be sited along Burnett Street next to Braided Rivers Restaurant and Bar. It will be the anchor business in the Eastfield development.
Eastfield Investments chairman Brian Davidson said the hotel would provide a strong connection to the precinct’s central public piazza which would be accessed from surrounding streets by a series of laneways. “What we’re aiming to achieve with the Eastfield Hotel is an operation that not only meets a range of demands from the visitor industry, but also adds a great deal to what the community can enjoy in the centre of town. Adding new choices in hospitality and events offerings will create a real foundation for a dynamic entertainment precinct in the heart of Ashburton,” he said.
Davidson is delighted with the hotel design which he believes reflects Scenic Hotel Group’s desire to create a destination for the local community that reflected the best of Mid Canterbury. The hotel will include a first floor events centre able to cater to groups of up to 200. This will be accessed by a grand, central staircase that overlooks the central piazza. Buchan group architect James Burgess said the hotel’s design had been inspired by the colours and forms of the district. “The designs have been inspired by the region, particularly in the use of local produce, mate-
rials, tones and textures in the series of public areas,” he said. Burgess said he also focused on creating an architectural style that fitted the Ashburton townscape, with a strong two-storey form along Burnett Street broken down into a series of smaller elements that were consistent with Ashburton’s style.” An additional local element in the project has been the involvement of former Ashburton woman Charlotte Cochrane who is leading the interior design on the project. The hotel will feature a range of dining options, including a breakfast cafe sited to capture the
morning sun, an all-day dining area with an open-display kitchen and a craft beer operation that will open into the central piazza. A dining laneway will provide a sheltered connection between the restaurant, café and bar and the development’s public spaces. The central piazza will provide a sunny, sheltered, central focus for retail and food business as well as the hotel. It will also provide an open civic space that can be used casually or for events. Eastfield is a co-operative development involving several landowners, including the Ashburton District Council.

Mount Hutt College will next year have four Year 7 classes as a boom in primary school students hits the school. Normally there are just three classes at any year level and it will be the first time there has been four Year 7 classes for at least five years. More than 90 children enrolled at the school for next year attended a new entrant orientation day yesterday, including about 82 who will be in Year 7, about four who will be in Year 8, and about eight who will be in Year 9.
Deputy principal Kris Canham said the students were accompanied by family members as they toured around the school, meeting teachers and visiting classrooms. “We had very positive feedback afterwards, from the parents and the students, about the things they enjoyed about the school and how excited the new entrants are for next year,” she said. Students were from the main contributing schools of Methven Primary School and Lauriston School, as well as Mt Somers Springburn School, Rakaia,
Longbeach and Allenton schools. Mount Hutt College has a roll of 470 to 490, and Canham said this was not expected to change over the next few years with any increase in primary school numbers likely to take some years to filter through. There was a high number of pupils at Year 12, who will have all left by 2019. “I think it will balance out in the next few years,” Canham said. The school has an enrolment zone, but restrictions on outof-zoners do not kick in until it reaches its limit of about 520.
Methven Primary and Lauriston schools’ numbers suggest the college is not likely to see the bulk of any primary school increase for some years down the track. Lauriston School principal Colin Brodie said the school’s growing roll was mostly “bottom heavy” with high numbers of new entrants coming through. Methven Primary School deputy principal Keryn Hooker said v 6s there were 54 leaving Year at the end of this year, but this number of graduates would drop to the early to mid-40s for the following three years.
Roads, traffic and a second bridge across the Ashburton River are the top three issues people in the Ashburton District want their rates money spent on. As the Ashburton District Council’s Our Place survey moves into phase three, the community’s wish list has been narrowed down to the eight ideas that received the most support in phases one and two. Roading, traffic and the second bridge were supported by 20 per cent of the 863 respondents. Ashburton’s town centre and the central business area came second on 17 per cent, followed by the information centre or i-SITE, 9 per cent and issues around the council, consultation and spending came fourth, 8 per cent. The eight ideas (in alphabetical order) that will now go out to the community to be prioritised are: Business development including retail shops, restaurants and industry; community safety including street lighting, road safety and security patrols; EA Networks Centre developments including hydroslides, pool/stadium growth and sports field development; environment, including freshwater management and banning plastic bags; new entertainment centres, including bowling alleys, ice rinks and climbing walls; roading, including sealed and unsealed road maintenance; the second bridge development in Ashburton; town centre development, specifically the Ashburton CBD. In the next phase of the survey residents are asked to rank these eight options in order from highest to lowest importance. The survey is available at www. ItsOurPlace.com

An organisation that will firmly link Ashburton College with its past, had its first outing last night. While many schools have a strong organisation that attracts a large number of ex-students, Ashburton College’s alumni has been a late bloomer. Its foundations were laid earlier this year and a small group of people have been working behind the scenes to establish the framework of an organisation that will not only provide a link for past students with their school, but also will become an avenue past students can use to support the college through grants and donations. At Wednesday night’s launch alumni chairman Alister Argyle said the organisation’s first official function was a celebration of about 138 years of education in the Ashburton District because its members represented not only Ashburton College, but also its two founding schools, Ashburton High School and Hakatere College. The new organisation’s number one challenge Argyle said, was to identify as many of its past students and staff as possible and to make them aware the alumni was

in business. “We hope that in the future as many of these as possible can channel their wisdom and guidance into the college’s students today and into the future,” he said.
While many past students would use the alumni as a way to reconnect with friends from their school days, there was also the potential for the organisation to become a way for people to sup-
port the school financially, Argyle said. “Our aim is to establish a fund that will enhance the college and therefore enhance the opportunities for students.”
Currently the alumni had 279 formal members, but in terms of social media it had more than1500 likes and followers and many more who were accessing its website, he said.

Ashburton to sparkle as lights lit Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel will officially light Ashburton’s new Christmas tree at Light Up The Night on December 1. This will happen at 9pm, following a countdown from MCs Phil Hooper and Peter Mac, from Hokonui FM. The free event, being organised by the Ashburton District Council in Baring Square East, will be alcohol and smokefree. Families are invited from 7pm to see the movie Arthur Christmas on a big-screen, as well as join in some carol singing. The silver band will be playing Christmas music from 6.40pm. Council is funding the event with support from EA Networks to help install the six-metre tall tree and decorations. People are welcome to bring rugs and a picnic and there will be several food trucks offering everything from pizza to ice-creams. Community relations manager Vincie Billante said Baring Square East comfortably hosts about 600 people. “So it will definitely be a case of being there early to get a good spot,” she said.

Rutherford House and Blake House faced off in activities including an obstacle course, human battleships and capture the flag. Principal Mark Ellis said the regular house competition days were fun for all involved.
It gave Year 8 students a chance to build their leadership skills and teachers a chance to dress up and show their house spirit, he said. Teacher Anna Young said it was also a very big day on the calendar for house points.

One negative that can’t go away Matt Markham

T
he reappearance of Tony Veitch on television screens lasted exactly zero seconds. In the same sweeping manner in which it was announced he would be a part of a new sporting television show, Press Box, Veitch was announced as no longer being involved by Sky Television bosses this week. An incredible broadcaster with an equally as incredible sporting brain, Veitch is also tarred with the brush of being found guilty of breaking his wife’s back in 2006. Mud, unfortunately – or not unfortunately – depending on which way you look at it, sticks and it would appear that any time Tony Veitch comes up in conversation now, that horrible act is going to follow him. There’s no doubt that the intense public scrutiny of the announcement has played a part in his stepping down from what, on face value, looked like it would be a good, strong, hard-hitting sports show on our screens. But 11 years on, should it still have such an impact? There is a real concern out in the public that Veitch showed no remorse for his actions and it would seem, judging by online comments, that the nation is very split on how he should be treated. With more than 200,000 followers on his Facebook page, he is still very popular. He engages with his listeners frequently and brings forth robust debate on any number of sporting issues. But the other side of the coin is that people despise him for what he did. He is nothing but a violent thug who deserves to be treated with disdain each time his name appears in a public forum. Does he deserve a chance to be back on the television sets? Probably not, but then again he has been back on the radio airwaves for quite some time anyway so what difference does it actually make? There is no doubting that sports broadcasting would be all the better for his input and involvement, but that would also come at quite a considerable cost to the brand of the television channel he was appearing on. There is no denying that Veitch is very, very good at what he does as a broadcaster. But at the end of the day, a whole heap of positives do not outweigh a very serious negative.

The hurricane tummy bug W
e’ve just had a tummy bug go through our family. I liken it to a hurricane ripping through the body and, just like a storm, it has different categories. Things took a turn for the worse after the regular Saturday morning coffee and Guardian Quiz catch-up. One by one the inlaws dropped. The hurricane struck Adam first, it was a category 2 storm. It was very windy, flattened even tall, well-built structures, but was relatively dry. The storm obviously gained strength as it crossed water (Ashburton River); by the time it touched down on Nathan it was a category 4. A very aggressive, but short and sharp storm. It also flattened all structures and caused those caught in its path to search for help by making regular calls on the big white telephone. Maddison Hooper also shared Nathan’s Category 4 pain, although she preferred to projectile her calls of help all over the house. Sunday morning it hit me, but it was down to Category 3 now. Although not as aggressive as the Category 4, it did appear to last longer and could still level

large structures. It came close to causing major damage to the Tinwald sewer system. After crossing a large mass like mine it had died down in strength as it headed back north again and touched down on Sandra, it was now a category 2 and still intense enough to leave her housebound for a day. One family member mentioned, the cast-iron interior of Robin, took the fight out of the storm. There’s every chance there was still bad wind around though. By the time it affected the rest of the family it had died down to a category 1. More of a headache than any serious amount of damage. I am in day five of clean up after my hurricane and I’m still getting daily reminders of the storm. On the positive side of things, the storm left my land mass three kilos lighter.

New Zimbabwe unfolds Poised to become Zimbabwe’s next president, a former confidant of ousted leader Robert Mugabe promised “a new, unfolding democracy” and reached out to the world, saying international help is needed to rebuild the shattered economy. Emmerson Mnangagwa, who fled Zimbabwe upon being fired from his job as vice president on November 6, made a triumphant return to the country a day after 93-year-old Mugabe resigned. His departure after 37 years in power followed a week of intense pressure — from the military that staged a government takeover, from members of parliament who started impeachment proceedings and from citizens who protested in the streets. While Mnangagwa talked in his speech about democracy and “working together,” he also recited slogans from the ruling ZANU-PF party such as “Forward with ZANU-PF, down with enemies” that are unlikely to attract Zimbabweans in the opposition. He served for decades as Mugabe’s enforcer, a role that earned him the nickname “Crocodile.” Many opposition supporters believe he was instrumental in the army killings of thousands of people when Mugabe moved against a political rival in the 1980s. Mnangagwa was in hiding during the political drama that led to Mugabe’s resignation. His appearance at the headquarters of the party electrified a crowd that waited for hours. Flanked by bodyguards, and dressed in a blue suit, he raised his fists and danced a little on a podium, delighting supporters who hope he can guide Zimbabwe out of political and economic turmoil that has exacted a heavy toll on the southern African nation of 16 million. “Today we are witnessing the beginning of a new, unfolding democracy,” said the 75-year-old, who added that he had already received messages of support from other countries. “We need the cooperation of the continent of Africa,” he said. “We need the cooperation of our friends outside the continent.” After meeting with South African President Jacob Zuma, Mnangagwa flew in a private jet from South Africa to Zimbabwe. That’s according to Mojo magazine, who ranked Reid’s highly acclaimed record Preservation No. 2 on its list of the 50 best albums of 2017. Mojo praised Reid’s album for being full of “heartbreak, wise introspection, lyrical observation, fluid folk guitars and hook filled pop smarts”. The party’s Central Committee had voted to remove Mugabe from his party leadership post and replace him with Mnangagwa, a former justice and defense minister with close ties to the military. Mugabe fired his longtime deputy as the former president’s wife, Grace Mugabe, positioned herself to replace him and succeed her husband. That led the military to step into the party’s factional battle a week ago by sending tanks into the streets and putting the president under house arrest — a move that opened the door for the party and the people to turn against the leader who took power after the end of white minority rule in 1980. The resignation was met with wild celebrations across the Zimbabwean capital of Harare. People were thrilled to be rid of a leader whose early promise, including an
emphasis on education, was overtaken by economic collapse, government dysfunction and human rights violations. Mnangagwa “faces high expectations but will have a short honeymoon while he starts the process of moving Zimbabwe forward,” the state-run Zimbabwe Herald newspaper said in a commentary. “He has the best wishes of most Zimbabweans, at least today,” the newspaper said. One unemployed man who heard that Mnangagwa was arriving at an air force base on the outskirts of Harare waited in vain at its entrance in hopes of seeing him. Godwin Nyarugwa said he was “very ecstatic” about Mugabe’s resignation and that “we need change in this country, change in everything” after years of economic crisis. But he said Mnangagwa would have to produce results. “We have to try him and see,” he said of Mnangagwa. “If he doesn’t come up with something, we need to change him as well.” - AP
J-Law single again Jennifer Lawrence has reportedly split from Darren Aronofsky. The 27-yearold actress and her Mother! director boyfriend went their separate ways a month ago, but things are amicable and they remain friends, sources told Entertainment Tonight. The former couple – who dated for a year – were spotted together at the Governors Awards in Los Angeles on 11 November, by which point they had already broken up. But sources said were still happy to sit together as they are friendly and things are not “awkward”.

Kiwi adventurer Pete Bethune has survived being stabbed in the ribs after he wrestled with two men trying to rob him in Brazil. Bethune fought with two men for about two minutes in the port of Santana, where he was trying to hire a boat while looking into the local wildlife trade. “I honestly thought I was gone. We fell to the ground and I felt the knife go into my ribs, I thought my number had come up,” he told Radio NZ. “There was probably 15 people would have seen this happen. I was yelling out for help and no one came.” After the men ran off he took a taxi to his hotel where he patched himself up before making his way to hospital. The doctor told him the blade was wedged between the ribs and if it had
been at a different angle would have penetrated much further. “This is not the first time I’ve been attacked ... I am lucky to be alive and I am counting my blessings.” Santana police are investigating. “They think there’s a reasonable chance of catching these guys.” Bethune had just been visiting nearby Macapa Prison, where the six men jailed for Sir Peter Blake’s 2001 murder are being held. He said he lost his mobile phone and his backpack contained only an Auckland bus card and about $7 in cash. The 52-year-old is known for his 2008 round-the-world record in the biofuelled Earthrace trimaran. In 2010 he spent four months in a Tokyo jail following anti- whaling activities in Antarctic waters.
Myers saves the day Seth Meyers is stepping in at the last minute to host the Golden Globes 2018. The Late Night host and comedian is about to close a deal with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to helm the star-studded film and television award ceremony on January 7. There had been rumours the Golden Globes were set to go ahead host-less – as the awards had previously done until 2009 – as no stars were willing to take on the task of fronting the ceremony following Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s celebrated three-year reign. But Myers – famous for his antiDonald Trump gags - is set to come to the rescue.

Warehouse Stationary is also hosting a “Cyber Weekend” of deals, offering 30 per cent off computers and 40 per cent off printers and office furniture. Department store Farmers is hosting a two-day “Blackout

While significant shopping discounts were tempting, Canstar general manager Jose George said shoppers should be careful not to get carried away. “Consumers can grab some fantastic discounts on Black Friday but don’t be tempted to get too carried away,” George said. “If you are paying by credit card and then fail to pay your balance off in full, at the end of the month the interest you accumulate may eclipse the discount you got in the first place.” George said the same applied for personal finance deals offered. Growth of Black Friday in New Zealand is on the rise, last year surpassing 160 per cent growth year on year and is expecting to be even bigger this year, according to online price comparison website PriceSpy. Retail growth slows New Zealand retail sales increased at a slower pace in the third quarter, as restaurant sales dropped without major sporting events and fuel prices continued to decline. Sales volumes rose 0.2 per cent in the three months ended Sept. 30, following a 2 percent rise in the June quarter, Statistics New Zealand figures show. The value of retail sales rose 0.1 per cent, compared to the 1.6 per cent increase in the previous quarter. Eight of the 15 industries surveyed posted higher sales volumes in the quarter, while six reported increased values. Electronic and electrical goods sales rose 5.1 per cent by volume. - NZME

number of analysts wondering whether Fonterra will maintain the current farmgate milk price of $6.75 per kilo. A large number of market commentators have pulled their season estimates back on this recent weakness, however all estimates are above last season’s price. The weaker New Zealand dollar may mitigate some of the dairy price declines, as it is in US dollars. However, it will not be enough to entirely offset the weakness. Migration was the other big talking point of the week, with net migration for the year to October reaching 70,700. This is high by historical standards however it is below the recent highs and certainly cementing our thoughts that we have seen the peaks in migration. For the first time in a few months, the number of kiwis leaving has outnumbered those returning. The biggest change from last month was an increase in departures of non-New Zealand citizens and this was the main contributor to the falling net migration figure. Looking globally, political uncertainty has reared its head in Europe, with Germany still not forming a coalition. The German election was held on the same weekend as our own, now two months ago, and coalition talks have broken

down this week between Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic union party, the Greens and the far right. As talks broke down there were talks of Merkel’s party forming a minority government. Merkel’s response was that she would rather send Germany back to the polls than do this, prompting talks that there would be another election. The euro was under significant pressure following these revelations, however markets have shrugged off the news, and rallied. A weaker euro is beneficial for many areas in the Eurozone as they have a high proportion of listed exporters. In the US, the release of the Fed minutes captured some attention as did Janet Yellen’s remarks. The market is all but certain there will be another rate hike in December however, the path they will follow after this is now very uncertain. The uncertainty was exacerbated by Janet Yellen’s commentary around low inflation and suggesting that this is more than a passing trend and could indeed be the new normal. Yellen’s stint as Fed Chair is almost over, with Jerome Powell announced to be taking her place in February. When Powell takes over Yellen will resign from the Fed however, he is seen as being sympathetic to her views and we are likely to see a continuation of the current policy path.

The market week in review arkets this week have moved higher, with the NZX50 seemingly ending its November losing streak, while Global markets shrugged off political uncertainty in Europe. The reporting and AGM season has continued in New Zealand and Australia, with a number of companies releasing updated guidance. The latest global dairy auction disappointed while migration trends were cemented when October figures were released. Up until this week, November has been a bit weak for the New Zealand market and we looked to be on track to break our 10-month winning streak. However, positive news flow from the reporting season coupled with renewed interest in some of the growth stocks of the index has seen the index rebounded strongly. Although remaining below where it started the month, it is certainly within cooee. On the local economic calendar, there were two highlights for investors to look towards. The first was the Global Dairy Trade auction. The previous three auctions had logged declines, and also marked the end of the stability that the index had seen for a number of months. The dairy futures market was expecting a gain at the auction, however, the market was disappointed when the headline index finished down 3.4 per cent. There was another decline the price of whole milk powder, a key product group for New Zealand. Skim milk powder also registered a decline. This latest decline has a

Black Friday, which kicks off in New Zealand today, originated in the United States and is a retail extravaganza following Thanksgiving, marking the first day of the US shopping season. The retail event is a huge deal in the US and UK, and has been picking up in popularity with retailers and consumers in New Zealand over the past few years. This year New Zealand retailers are offering discounts of between 30 and 60 per cent to mark the occasion, with consumer electronics and clothing tipped to be items with the largest savings to be had. Clothing retailer Cotton On is hosting a four-day sale starting tomorrow, offering 30 per cent off everything in its stores nationwide. Kathmandu is offering similar discounts through the weekend.

C-HR the RAV4’s little sibling C -HR stands for Coupe – High Rider, despite its having four doors and riding kind of low for a crossover. Smaller than its corporate sibling the RAV4, it is bigger than the Nissan Juke and should have greater interior room. The company did a better job with the styling than the name. The bulging fenders, tapered greenhouse, falling roofline, and rising beltline were originally sketched at Toyota’s California design studio and survived almost entirely intact through two concept iterations that were shown in September 2014 and September 2015. The C-HR is built on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA), a flexible platform that debuted with Toyota’s fourth-generation Prius. Compared with the one-size-up RAV4, the C-HR is roughly 25cm shorter, 50cm narrower, and 10cm lower. Yet the C-HR still has a significant size advantage on the Juke. The Toyota packs an extra 23cm of length and 11cm of wheelbase compared with the Nissan, so it should be better suited to moving passengers and cargo behind the front seats. Toyota also says it wants the C-HR’s dance moves to match its looks. Engineers claim it handles like a C-segment hatchback, with less body roll than the common crossover. The C-HR is offered with a 1.2-litre turbo four-cylinder or a hybrid powertrain that uses a 1.8-litre four-cylinder.

his week 300 of the world’s biggest classic and performance car enthusiasts came together in London to celebrate the winners of the Octane Awards 2017 – the accolade of Car of the Year being won by the 2017 Jaguar XKSS Continuation. Now in their seventh year, the awards celebrate the continued growth of the classic car industry, which has continued to flourish largely due to the efforts of the likes of the nominees. The much coveted Car of the Year category was voted for by thousands of Octane readers. The winning 2017 Jaguar XKSS Continuation was the completion of a project started in the mid-1950s when the Coventry company converted 25 racing D-types into road legal cars.
A factory fire in 1957 destroyed nine of these pioneering supercars, but now that tragic loss has been gloriously reversed. The meticulously crafted continuation cars that emerged from Jaguar Classic this year have inspired awe in enthusiasts around the world. Leonardo Fioravanti was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his extensive body of work in the automotive industry, and with Ferrari in particular. ston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro is an extraordinary track-only evolution of the most extreme Aston Martin in history. Developed in parallel with the road car, but freed from the constraints and considerations of road use, the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro is the ultimate expression of performance. The brainchild of Adrian Newey – the most successful Formula One designer of all-time – and the product of the unique collaboration between Aston Martin, Red Bull Advanced Technologies and project partner AF Racing, just 25 Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pros will be built. Deliveries are expected in 2020. All cars are sold. The most obvious changes have been made to the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro’s exterior. All the aerodynamic surfaces have been revised in the pursuit of significantly increased downforce, including the addition of much larger front and rear wing elements, together with revised active aerodynamic control strategies tailored for the demands of track driving. The hypercar’s naturally-aspirated 6.5-litre Cosworth-built V12 engine develops more power and torque – exact figures will be released in due course – thanks to a significant engine recalibration and the modification of the road car’s emission control systems. The output of the Rimac Energy Recovery System remains unchanged, but its control systems will be re-programmed. The AMR Pro runs on wheels of a smaller diameter than the road car (18-in front and rear) in order to facilitate the fitment of Michelin racing tyres, which are made to the same specification as those used by LMP1 cars in the World Endurance Championship. The AMR Pro also features F1TM inspired race-spec carbon-carbon brakes as their performance characteristics are perfectly suited to the extremes of track use. The opportunity has also been taken to make further weight savings, both through
the removal of extraneous items such as the heater/de-mister blower and infotainment screens fitted to the road car, and through the fitment of new ultra-lightweight track-specific components. These include polycarbonate windscreen (with heater elements) and side windows, a lighter construction of carbon fibre bodywork, new suspension uprights and carbon fibre wishbones, plus moulded race seats in place of the adjustable road car items. The AMR Pro’s exhaust system will also be lighter than that fitted to the road car due to the minimal silencing requirements. The result of this unprecedented pursuit of performance is a genuinely mind-blowing car. One with a higher top speed (predicted to be close to 250mph), coupled to the ability to sustain cornering forces in excess
of 3.3g and braking deceleration of more than 3.5g. According to Red Bull Technology’s extensive simulation work the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro will be capable of achieving lap times to rival those of a contemporary F1 or LMP1 car – pace previously unthinkable in a car derived from a fully homologated road car. Given the car’s extraordinary capabilities Valkyrie AMR Pro customers will be taken through an intensive and comprehensive driver development programme. Tailored to their individual experience and skill levels, owners will have access to the same facilities as Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s F1TM drivers. This includes time in the simulator and professional on-track tuition, plus programmes to improve their physical fitness. They will then be ready to enjoy their cars to the full with a series of dedicated
track events held at some of the world’s most prestigious race tracks. Red Bull Technology’s Chief Technical Officer, Adrian Newey, said: “While it is endowed with extraordinary performance, it has always been vitally important to me that the Valkyrie functions well as a true road car, and that naturally comes with some constraints. “However, with the track-only Valkyrie AMR Pro we have the freedom to create an extreme evolution that makes no such concessions. “While the core elements of the road and track versions are shared, every aspect of the AMR Pro – aerodynamics, chassis, powertrain and weight – has been optimised to significantly extend the performance envelope. “It offers a level of track performance significantly beyond any previous two seat closed roof car.”
Four-wheeled Beatles memorabilia
C
ome together, right now ... for the ultimate car auction for Beatles fans. Next month’s Bonhams Bond St Sale in London offers the unique opportunity to buy two highly collectible classic vehicles originally owned by members of arguably the biggest band of all time. The first, an Aston Martin DB4 worth an estimated $NZ2.9 million, was originally bought by Sir Paul McCartney in 1964 and the second, a characterful 1966 Mini Cooper S Radford conversion, was owned by drummer Ringo Starr and could sell for about $230,000. Take a closer look at both cars before they go under the hammer next month. The long-standing association with the James Bond series, and the fact there are relatively few still around, has made the Aston Martin DB5 an obvious collectible, with the best examples of the 1059 made easily fetching seven-figure sums at auction. But this one has the added celebrity as-
sociation with Macca, who ordered the car in 1964 before the Beatles’ world tour that summer. When he took delivery on September 22, the bass guitarist and singer handed over £3800 10s. plus purchase tax of £793 6s. 8d. (around $NZ168,000 today) — experts now believe it’s worth more than 320 times that first-paid figure. However, the car you see here today isn’t
as it was when McCartney got his hands on the keys some 53 years ago. Back then it was finished in Sierra Blue with a black interior and was registered BYY 379B — as it remained for 48 years, six of which were under McCartney’s ownership. Everything changed in 2012, after motor enthusiast Chris Evans had owned the car and fitted it with the 64 MAC plate it has today. The new — and most recent —
keeper, who purchased the car at an RM Auction sale in London five year’s ago, commissioned a full restoration that took four years. All four of the Beatles famously owned Minis, but Ringo’s had to be a little bit different for practicality purposes. The boot was tiny so the drummer had to look for another solution to carry his bulky equipment. Step forward the specialist Mini coachbuilder Harold Rashford, who was creating a small run of limited edition Mini de Ville GT conversions with a hatchback door and more luggage space. Finished in two-tone Regal Red and Silver-Grey, it was described as the RollRoyce of Minis and featured in displays at the Beatles City exhibition in Liverpool and Dallas during the 80s. In 1990, the car returned to the UK and was restored. Eight years later it won the coveted Cartier Style et Luxe concours award at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Luxurious practicality A
s far as we know there’s no cross-dressers amongst the Guardian motoring team. But then again, one of us, from about this time of the year starts wearing a Santa suit and a bushy white beard. What’s more, he is appropriately named – (Saint) Bernard. So with reindeer and sleigh according to my grandkids being so last year, I’ll suggest to him that this new, larger fifth-generation Discovery with its blend of comfort and definite off-road ability will be a much more convenient, and decidedly more desirable way of carrying out his delivery of gifts Hopefully he has been saving up during his off-season though, for prices start at $114,900 for the SE versions, $126,900 for HSEs and $136,900 for the HSE Luxury (all plus ORCs of course). These prices are the same for both the Td6 with its 3-litre, V6 190kW/600Nm turbo-diesel and also the Si6 which has a 3litre V6 supercharged petrol engine producing 250kw/450Nm. Then there’s a long list of extra cost options available for each model, some of which the test Disco featured. We were very impressed with the accomplished manner the twin-turbo V6 diesel, with its notable 600Nm torque from 1750 to 2250rpm propelled the 2.3 tonne Disco.

This engine is smooth and responsive, making for effortless driving during all the rather varied conditions driven. What’s more, when dialing up Sport, the auto changes at higher revs and you can use the paddles. Land Rover say it will sprint to 100km/h in 8.1 seconds and has a top speed of 209km/h. So Donner, Blitzen and co, there’s a challenge. In doing this, it’s obvious the very smooth eight-speed auto makes the best possible use of the abundant torque available, and does this with seamless changes. And of course there’s constant fourwheel-drive, which in concert with the selectable Terrain Response technology that adapts engine, gearbox and diff responses results in the best possible traction and roadholding possible. For the really difficult stuff selecting low range turns off the stability control (but not of course the traction control) and
raises the suspension. The result is cross-country and climbing capability that will most surely match that of those reindeer. Then of course there’s a downhill descent function for really steep stuff. As well there’s 283mm of ground clearance, approach and departure angles are34/30 degrees respectively and the wading depth is 900mm. However, irrespective of this off-road prowess, its considerable height and width the Disco provides a very comfortable, quiet on-road ride and at open road cruise, feels keen to be going even more quickly. Through corners it feels very confident, composed, and predictable. The claimed overall fuel consumption is 7.2L/100km. Inside the very well-finished, black leather furnished cabin, which has a Range Rover-ish luxury, quality and technology feel to it, there is just so much space. Enough to accommodate not only a large Santa but six large size, adult helpers, all of whom could in this case, enjoy their heated (and cooled) seats together with the power adjustment of these. The second row of seats slides, enabling decent legroom for it and the third row. The clever air suspension system lowers the Disco for easy entry and exit, which may be particularly helpful for those who have been enjoying some Christmas cheer while seated on the inner tail-gate.
This, like the main one, is power operated and as well as preventing stuff spilling out whilst parked nose up on hills (or roofs) folds down for use as a seat holding up to 300kg. Underneath is a full sized spare wheel. With all seats in use there’s 258 litres of gifts/luggage space; with the third row folded 1137 litres, then folding the second for a 2401 litre, 2-metre long space. As expected safety-wise the Disco has a five-star ANCAP rating. Autonomous emergency braking is standard, but adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance and blind spot monitoring are available as optional extras.

Waikiki Beach off to US

Former star three-year-old Waikiki Beach has been sold and will do his future racing in North America. Australian-born New Jersey trainer Ross Croghan, who was in Christchurch for the New Zealand Cup last week, has purchased the son of Somebeachsomewhere on behalf of clients. Croghan could be taking home as many as six horses with him and Waikiki Beach is the biggest name amongst the shipment. The Tony Herlihy-trained pair Mr Euroman and Classy Chapel are among his other buys, as is the well-performed Canterbury pacer Shineonucrazydiamond,
who won three races for Cran Dalgety. A deal to purchase another top pacer, Hug The Wind, is also in the works and is expected to be finalised by today. Waikiki Beach looked like being the next superstar of Australasia when he won his first 19 starts from the stable of Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen. He would finish his three-yearold season the winner of 23 of his 24 starts, all bar the first two of them in Australia. Among his five Group 1 wins across the ditch were the 2016 New South Wales Derby and the 2015 and 2016 Australasian Breeders Crown Finals.
But in one of the biggest falls from grace ever, Waikiki Beach did not win a race in New Zealand as a four-year-old or to start this, his five-year-old campaign – a run stretching 14 starts. He disappointed in the Ashburton Flying Stakes and Kaikoura Cup and was most recently second-last in the Show Day Free For All won by stablemate, Thefixer last Friday. Waikiki Beach was raced by Queensland’s Cheryl Rasmussen and Christchurch’s Trevor Casey, the later of which bought out Neil Pilcher’s one-third share during the horse’s three-year-old season. - NZHN
False alarm with Maxim in the Mangos barn It’s been a roller-coaster ride for Brent Mangos with his star pacer Maxim in the past few weeks. After a brilliant win at Alexandra Park nearly three weeks’ ago, he then put in an exceptional run for fourth in the New Zealand

Cup at Addington last Tuesday. But after the race there were fears the injury-plagued pacer, who missed the best part of three years with leg injuries from early 2014 to early 2017, had broken down once again.
“Originally, we thought it might have been a tendon as he was pretty sore after the Cup,” Mangos said. “But it turns out he was just jarred up and I think he will be fine for the Auckland Cup at the end of next month.
“He’ll be swum for the next week or two, but he’s coming right and I definitely think he’ll be good to go in a week or two.” It’s back to reality this week and Mangos heads to his usual haunt at Alexandra Park. - NZHN
Strong Te Akau team The Te Akau Racing Stables team will on tomorrow take another step toward assembling its squad for the Karaka Million (1200m). Trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards will be looking to Pinot Grey, an impressive debut winner at Otaki earlier this month, to cement her place in the line-up for the $1 million juvenile feature to be run at Ellerslie on January 27. Pinot Grey has $6250 in the kitty as a result of her win and a further victory (or even a second) in the $50,000 Listed Ashford Lodge 2YO Stakes (1100m) this weekend will be enough to guarantee her spot in the Karaka Million. - NZME
Payback for Myers Taupiri owner-trainer John Morell is finally off the blocks again with his talented filly Florence Jean and fulfilling a promise to jockey Rosie Myers. Florence Jean will be having her first start since she finished second to Dijon Bleu in the Gr.3 Hawke’s Bay Breeders Gold Trail Stakes (1200m) at Hastings a couple of months ago when she resumes in the La Nuova Apparelmaster 1200 at New Plymouth today. Autumn Wild making much-anticipated debut There’s no pressure on high-priced and beautifully-bred Snitzel filly Autumn Wild when she makes her debut in Saturday’s Listed Ashford Lodge Stakes (1100m) at Pukekohe, says Matamata trainer Lance O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan’s Wexford Stables went to $750,000 to snare Autumn Wild at this year’s Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney, bought in partnership with Hermitage Thoroughbreds and Andrew Williams Bloodstock. Hermitage Thoroughbreds have enjoyed Group One success with O’Sullivan and his co-trainer Andrew Scott in the past 14 months through Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) winner Willie Cazals and Gr.1 Sistema Stakes (1200m) winner Summer Passage. An impressive winner of her two trials at Te Awamutu then Cambridge, Autumn Wild is out of Regimental Gal, whose wins included the Gr.1 Lightning Stakes (1000m), Gr.1 Australia Stakes (1200m) and the Magic Millions 2yo Classic (1200m). “She’ll probably start one of the favourites and she has trialled really well but there’s no expectation on her to win,” O’Sullivan said. “We bought her at the Sydney Easter sales for the same owners as Summer Passage and we’ll build her up slowly. “She’ll take plenty of improvement out of this race. O’Gara to coach Crusaders Former Ireland international Ronan O’Gara is joining the Crusaders’ coaching staff next year. O’Gara, 40, will replace Leon McDonald as backs coach for the Super Rugby champions, it was confirmed yesterday. The first five-eighth played 128 games for Ireland between 2000 and 2013 and went on British and Irish Lions tours in 2001, 2005 and 2009. He holds the record for most points scored for Ireland. O’Gara says Super Rugby is an incredible opportunity at this stage in his coaching career. “New Zealand sets the bar in world rugby, and Super Rugby is recognised as one of the toughest international rugby tournaments. “So to coach in New Zealand – for the current Super Rugby champions – is an enticing prospect for any coach.” Crusader Scott Robertson played against O’Gara twice in Tests and believes he will complement the current coaching group.
The two other retained assistants are Brad Mooar and Jason Ryan. Crusaders coach Hamish Riach echoed that. “He was a brilliant player and has gone on to prove himself as an outstanding coach with Racing 92 in Paris,” he said. “We believe that Ronan is the right fit for this team.” O’Gara will join the Crusaders from the new year. Paris club Racing 92 confirmed he would leave with its blessing midway through the Top 14 season in December, ending 4-1/2 years service, mainly as their defence coach. O’Gara was contracted until the end of 2019 but a Racing 92 statement said the club “did not want to deprive one of its faithful servants of a great opportunity”. Big bucks for Kiwi league stars in cup Cash-strapped Tonga and Fiji are in line for a hard-earned payday by making the semifinals of the Rugby League World Cup. The disparity in wages between the top and second-tier teams has been a hot topic throughout the first month of the tournament with second-tier sides getting through the tournament on the smell of an oily rag, with minimal match fees and a $30 a day allowance. The disgraced Kiwis, despite their early exit, collected a tournament fee of A$33,000 each from the NZRL and took home a daily allowance of $120. They will also split A$35,000 as losing quarter-finalists. The reigning champion Kangaroos will pocket A$50,000 in tournament fees alone if they retain their crown. But at last, there’s some parity with both Pacific Island teams guaranteed at least A$125,000 for making it to the semis. And it could get better; the winners of tonight’s Australia-Fiji
clash in Brisbane and tomorrow’s Tonga-England match in Auckland will earn at least A$150,000 for making the final, with A$300,000 awaiting the eventual World Cup winners. How those spoils are divided is a decision for each team’s management but prizemoney is traditionally split in half between the players and the country’s governing body.
The rewards are vital for Tonga and Fiji, who have relied heavily on the generosity of sponsors, private benefactors and community fundraisers to cover operational costs. The players have subsisted on the standard $30 per diem provided by tournament organisers to each of the 14 men’s and six women’s sides competing at their World Cups. Every team also has their accommodation and travel costs covered which drastically eases their financial burden. But Tonga are still going without some resources, such as a video analyst, that Australia, England and New Zealand take for granted. Tongan players insist they have no complaints with the Kristian Woolf-coached side being well looked after by a small group of key sponsors, including one family who made a significant donation to the team’s cause. Fundraising events have also been profitable with the team
coming away with $8000 from one in Hamilton and just under $15,000 from another in Christchurch. Leveraging the team’s increasing popularity and booming profile has also helped team management get the best bang for their buck when the players are on their days off. A recent go-karting trip in Hamilton became cheaper when the business owner happily knocked 50 per cent off the quoted cost — on the proviso they could take photos of the players racing and snap a few selfies with stars such as Jason Taumalolo and Andrew Fifita. “I reckon this is the first camp that the boys get paid pretty good,” said centre Konrad Hurrell. “I guess it’s not enough compared to Australia, New Zealand or England, but it’s a lot to compare to what we’ve been getting the last few years. “For us to get looked after very well this year has been amazing.”
Donations denied England’s players have decided against donating part of their £22,000 match fee towards their Samoa counterparts ahead of their final autumn test at Twickenham on Sunday after World Rugby disputed claims by the Samoan Union that the governing body was bankrupt. Mako Vunipola had proposed donating at least £1000 per player earlier this month and it was understood at the time that there was near universal agreement within the squad to do so. The increased security measures of the modern era meant their were long queues before Wales played Australia, with many fans getting to their seats long after kick-off. Rebels secure Coleman The Melbourne Rebels have landed their biggest fish – both in size and value – with Wallabies lock Adam Coleman joining the Super Rugby club. The Melbourne side, which only won one game in 2017, has been remodelled under former Force coach Dave Wessels with Coleman the 16th new player signing on. Of that 16, 11 have come from the defunct Force. Rugby battle looms Former CEO of New Zealand Rugby, David Moffett, has said the speculated joint Spark and TVNZ bid for rugby broadcasting would be phenomenal. The former chief said if the consortium bid for rights to New Zealand Rugby fixtures went forward, things would get very interesting for New Zealand Rugby. “I think New Zealand Rugby Union are going to be at a phenomenal place to maximise the value of the rugby properties,” he said. Spark and TVNZ have reportedly discussed the joint bid to go forward when the fixtures are renewed following the 2020 season. “I think Amazon and also Google, that’s the way people are going to be digesting their product in the future.” - NZME

In brief
All Blacks machine will just roll on I
t sure has been a bumpy, or should I say mumpy, year for the All Blacks. The general feeling at this point seems to be that everyone is just waiting for the season to end. You would say it has been a successful one, drawing against basically the Wales team with a few England and Ireland players thrown in, and dominating the rugby championship. However, with what has been a topsy-turvy northern tour, things just seem to be dragging for the boys in black. They have had to scrap for

wins against France and Scotland, and have had injury after injury, and three players picking up the mumps just to add to the mix. There have been some bright points this season, such as the meteoric rise of Rieko Ioane and players like Kane Hames and Nepo Laulala grabbing their chances in the black jersey with both hands. Of course we have had the local joy of Tim Perry being called up, along with a plethora of other uncapped players that Steve Hansen is clearly looking to bring through at some point.

The All Blacks seem to have this formula that just allows them to keep rolling, and that is something no other team in world sport realistically has been able to capture. I remember the concern when the likes of Richie McCaw, Dan Carter and Conrad Smith retired,
but now that just seems like an insignificant part of history and not something that affected the team. All good things must come to an end and there is no way they will keep this level of dominance up forever, but I cannot see them slowing down anytime soon. The Irish and the English look threatening, and the Aussies seem to be on some sort of rebuild, but will be forever held back by the self-imploding Michael Cheika. Let’s just get this season over and done with and hope for better next year.

Pat Cummins removed Mark Stoneman for 53 in the final over before tea, kissing the top of middle stump with a cracking delivery to bring Joe Root to the middle. The first Test remains in the balance but the hosts will be cursing the chance put down by recalled keeper Tim Paine. James Vince had been on 68 and struggling to read Nathan Lyon’s offspin. Vince was 72 not out at tea. Steve Smith lost the toss then spoke of how Australia’s pace attack, having dominated discussion in the lead-up to the five-Test series, could make life hard for the batsmen with the help of an overcast sky plus a greentinged pitch.

Wharf plan for cup voted out Auckland councillors yesterday voted out an option favoured by Team New Zealand that would have seen an extension of the Halsey St Wharf. Two options, which would both sees clusters of bases around the Auckland waterfront, will now be negotiated with the Government and Emirates Team NZ. Team New Zealand said it was willing to be flexible about both options now available. However, they were disappointed that the full Halsey Wharf extension option had to be taken off the table. “It seriously restricts the ability for the marine industry to benefit from the berthing of the super yachts and the ability to extract maximum economic benefit,” Team New Zealand said in a statement. “The final plan for the Wynyard Basin option will need to reincorporate the lost super yacht berth age within the event perimeter.
“We will continue to work constructively with council and government to progress the plans.” Councillors, local board members and marine industry folk had earlier gathered to discuss and suggest options for an America’s Cup base in the city. The options were debated before the councillors’ vote. The options considered included extending the Halsey St Wharf to house up to eight yachting syndicates. The other was spreading the bases along Halsey, Wynyard and Hobson wharves. Community groups and members of the public were given an opportunity to put forward their own views about what they thought was the best option. Team NZ yesterday compromised and said they would back the Wynyard Basin clustered option across three nearby sites for the America’s Cup bases. They previously preferred Hal-
sey Wharf, which would require extension into the harbour - as it would provide a more “village feel” to the event. Board member Sir Stephen Tindall earlier said he was concerned about any more movement out into the harbour. The cost of building in Wynyard Basin sits between the other two options at $130 million, and has the fastest construction time of 10 months. Team NZ chief operations officer Kevin Shoebridge did, however, have some issues with the Wynyard Point dispersed option; including that at least two base spots would see a low-water issue. He also said a dispersed base might lack a cohesive village atmosphere. Speaking about how the event was hosted in San Francisco, he said: “It was pretty fragmented ... and it didn’t draw a lot of the public because of that.”
For the international crowd watching the event, it was fine, he said. “Locally, it suffered. A lot of people in San Francisco didn’t even know the event was on.” The Heart of the City also favoured clustering the bases and was vehemently opposed to the Halsey St Wharf extension. A spokeswoman said clustered bases would be a more practical and ideal option that would meet the teams’ needs as well as be economic and meet the public’s needs. The Waitemata and the Devonport-Takapuna local boards were also against extending the wharf into the harbour, but support having the Cup in Auckland. Waitemata local board deputy chairman Shale Chambers said the clustered bases would be a “pragmatic solution” that would save up to $50 million and provide a legacy for the city. - NZME

Maria examined Tennis star Maria Sharapova is being investigated by Indian police in a cheating and criminal conspiracy case after endorsing a luxury housing project that never took off. Real estate firm Homestead Infrastructure have been accused of taking millions of dollars from home buyers for a project called Ballet by Maria Sharapova. The Russian tennis player travelled to India in 2013 to launch the project for the luxury apartment complex which promised its own helipad, tennis academy and other amenities. The police investigation involving Sharapova’s involvement began last week after Piyush Singh, a lawyer representing one of the home buyers, said Sharapova’s celebrity endorsement was the reason most people invested in the project.

Golfer lives Tin Cup dream He grew up using baked bean cans for holes and now littleknown golfer Anthony Quayle is hoping to star in his own real-life version of Tin Cup after soaring into Australian Open contention in Sydney. Quayle’s four-under-par 67 on debut at The Australian Golf Club yesterday left the 23-yearold sharing fifth place, one shot behind his childhood idol Jason Day, after the opening round. A graduate of Hills International College, the same boarding school that Day graced before rising to world No.1, Quayle admits he never dreamed of playing the
Open after such humble beginnings. “I didn’t know places this good existed,” he said after reeling off seven birdies in his first holes. And what humble beginnings they were. Quayle grew up in Gove, a mining town on the north-east tip of the Northern Territory. “The nearest town was a ninehour drive on a corrugated dirt round. You needed to snorkel in a four-wheel drive to get through two rivers. “It was in the middle of nowhere.” Nobody in his family played
golf, but he used to ride his bike past the local course on his way to school. “When I was six, I wrote a wish list on my birthday and my parents got me a set of Loony Tune golf clubs for my seventh birthday,” Quayle recalled. “There were five golf clubs when I got started and they couldn’t take me all the time and it was too heavy for me to ride and put them on my back. “So I used some old baked bean tins and made a six-hole golf course around my house.” At 14, Quayle’s parents sent him to the Gold Coast for a bet-
ter education. But he only cared about golf. “We were always told about Jason when we were growing up and we wanted to be like Jason,” he said. Now the youngster dreams of a weekend pairing with Day and duelling for the Stonehaven Cup on Sunday. “To be able to walk inside the ropes here with Jason, or any of the big names here would be cool,” Quayle said. “I’d love the experience. Obviously he’s got some pretty good crowds out there and that’s what we practice for.” - AAP

Whincup, McLaughlin in super showdown Standing on the verge of history, Jamie Whincup will have to smash Scott McLaughlin’s dream of a maiden Supercars championship to win an unprecedented seventh title. McLaughlin enters the weekend’s final round in Newcastle 30 points adrift of Whincup. The 24-year-old Kiwi’s failure to finish the Bathurst 1000 is the blip that could stop an outstanding season translating to his first title. McLaughlin admitted the cordial pre-race formalities with Whincup were “weird” but not unusual, as the two men prepare to lock horns in the title fight’s climax. “At the end of the day we’ve had a fantastic year. I’ve got nothing to lose. I just go out there and drive as fast as I can,” McLaughlin said.

The great unknown for both men is the street circuit at Newcastle, which is set to host its first Supercars round with 95-lap races on Saturday and Sunday. “It’s a tight, twisty straight track with plenty of challenges,” Whincup said. Whincup will be crowned champion with two secondplaced finishes, even if McLaughlin pulls off a clean sweep. Incoming Melbourne coach Dave Wessels is making no apologies for putting his players through a tortuous pre-season, saying their fitness isn’t good enough to challenge for the Super Rugby title. Wessels said some of the Melbourne Rising players from the NRC needed to do a three-week pre-season before the official pre-season just to be able to manage the load. “What separates winning teams from losing teams is intensity and I think the players have found the intensity of our training and preparation probably a shift up from what they’ve been used to,” Wessels said on Thursday. “If we want to play rugby in the way that we want to play, which is moving the ball around and taking risks, we can’t even start to talk about those things unless we’re fit.

It suggests the team’s medical staff is confident enough in his fitness despite his history of back and hamstring injuries. “He said he was alright and ready to go. I think he’s had a jab and he doesn’t look as stiff today,” opening batsman David Warner told the Nine Network. Marsh was hampered by a jarred back in his most recent Test outing against India earlier this year.
Pearce leaves Roosters Mitchell Pearce’s decision to leave the Sydney Roosters will prolong his NRL career and make him a better player, according to his long-time State of Origin coach Laurie Daley. Daley has been one of Pearce’s staunchest supporters, having picked him for three Origin series during his five-year tenure as NSW coach before it ended this year. And while Daley said he felt for Pearce after he’d virtually been replaced by arch-rival Cooper Cronk at the Roosters, he expected the decision to leave his childhood club would benefit the NSW halfback in the long run. “While it’s sad he’s decided to move on, he’ll probably get more years out of his footy career by doing it,” Daley said.

After picking up an important victory last week, the Mid Canterbury senior rep cricket side will be hoping for much of the same when they travel down to Oamaru this weekend to play North Otago. The game will be their last before the Hawke Cup kicks off next weekend, and heading in to the competition with two wins under their belts would be a big confidence boost for a side that has struggled in the past few seasons. “I was pleased (with how we played), we achieved our goals, we batted the time and bowled consistently,” coach Garfield Charles said.
