Centuries of service from firefighters in the rural fire forces from across Mid Canterbury were recognised yesterday with the presentation of long service and good conduct to 25 rural firefighters. The awards are presented to firefighters who have served for at least 14 years, and receive and additional clasp for every seven years service beyond that. The longest-serving firefighter who received a medal was Des Syme from
the Lauriston Volunteer Fire Force who received a medal with six clasps, recognising 56 years of service. Rural fire officer Don Geddes said the recognition for the rural firefighters had been a long time coming. “These guys don’t get a lot as volunteers, especially being emergency service volunteers, so for someone to be doing this, available 24 hours a day, for 56 years is incredible,” he said. “It is a little thing to show our appreciation because we wouldn’t be able
to perform our legislative role without them. “We are here to enable them to do their job and support them and serve them, and not treat it as if they are there to serve us.” A total of 25 medals and clasps were presented at the Ashburton Fire Station, representing more than 760 years of service.
