Eight options are in the site mix for a $16 million-plus project that will see Ashburton with a new library and civic headquarters. The Ashburton District Council is taking the first steps in the district’s next big ticket project that will take at least three years to complete. The project has been up for debate for several years, has been deferred on at least one occasion. It is now tagged in its 20152025 long-term plan. The eight shortlisted site options range from several variations using one or both of the existing library and administration building sites to the Balmoral Hall site on the corner of Cass and Cameron streets, the East-
field development in the central business area and the Ashburton Business Estate. Also in the mix is the option of relocating the library to Ashburton College. Reaching a final decision, however, will be a long process that will involve plenty of public consultation, said council commercial manager James Webb. “We’re now at the stage of setting the framework on how we’ll proceed. The next step will be getting information around the sites. Once the site is determined then we’ll need to understand how things will fit around that,” he said. With the site identified design work would be commissioned and the project costed to determine whether the
$16 million tagged for the work was sufficient or whether there would be a shortfall. While potential sites had been identified, between that point and the completion of the project there would be several opportunities for community consultation and input, Mr Webb said. “Someone independent will be used to review the options, they’ll be workshopped and the council will come up with its preferred option and the project will then go out for public consultation.” The project was in its early stages and all options were wide open, he said.
