Coastal wells at record lows BY NADINE PORTER
NADINE.P@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Groundwater wells in coastal Mid Canterbury are at record lows, while up to 15 farmers on the north side of the Rakaia River are already on restrictions. Latest data from Environment Canterbury’s monitoring shows wells in Chertsey, Pendarves, Seafield and Lowcliffe are at record lows. ECan surface water
resources and ecosystems manager, Tim Davies, said generally ground water levels in the Ashburton District were low, with some at “quite record lows” east of State Highway 1. “It’s dry and levels are lower much earlier in the season.” Mr Davies said if the dry season continued as forecast, some farmers may use up their water allocation early and
may struggle to have water available at the end of the growing season when critical grain fill was occurring. “So irrigation efficiency is going to be absolutely key.”
