The ability for frontline police staff to wear tasers helps to ensure the safety of police, offenders and the community, Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield says. Earlier this year New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush announced that tasers would be routinely carried by frontline police staff rather than being available from a lockbox in police vehicles. Mr Banfield said with an increase in violence around the country, the fact that frontline police were able to carry tasers meant they were less likely to draw a firearm. Tasers were introduced to New Zealand Police in 2010, and before that only

batons and firearms were used. It was big step going from a baton to a firearm for police in violent situations, Mr Banfield said. “The taser is a great intermediate tool for dealing with offenders with weapons other than firearms, where in the past those offenders may well have been shot by police. “The fact that it’s the least lethal option I believe is a win-win for police in dealing with offenders that are willing to assault or attack police.” Last week Ashburton police were confronted by a well-known offender who had used a weapon on police and members of the public in the past. The 22-year-old man was tasered after being found by police in Hampstead

breaching his strict court-imposed bail conditions last Tuesday. When police attempted to arrest the man he became obstructive and aggressive, producing steel pliers from his pocket and threatening officers, Mr Banfield said. Police responded with pepper spray, but this was ineffective so a taser was deployed and the offender was restrained and arrested. The fact that police were carrying tasers greatly reduced the risk to staff and to the offender, who was able to be apprehended without injury, he said.
