A work space designed to be the hub of sports administration in Ashburton is standing empty with potential users turning away in droves. Sports House in the EA Networks Centre promised what users wanted – office space that would meet the needs of a wide range of sporting codes, but it’s failed to deliver what they expected. Rather than a space with offices for key tenants and open work space for hot deskers, users have been offered a desk in a large open space. And that, says Mid Canterbury Rugby chief executive Ian Patterson, is totally unworkable. From the outset Mr Patterson said that rugby and two other user groups

asked for partitioned office space and believed this would be provided. To find the workspace was all open plan was disappointing, he said. User groups and the council met on many occasions to discuss how Sports House would be configured but Mr Patterson believes the council has backed down on the original plan to a point where it is a watered down imitation. “We said from the outset that open plan wouldn’t work for us or for Sport Canterbury but it’s been built as open plan office space. We’ve been in discussions with the council about how the situation can be resolved because we’d still like to be in there.” Only Mid Canterbury Netball has set up its headquarters in the open plan workspace while the council

struggles to come up with a way to fill the remaining space to generate income. If key tenants were disappointed, so was the council, said council group manager service delivery Neil McCann, as it believed there was strong demand for office space. It is now looking at options to utilise what is proving to be an expensive, dead area. “The various options that these groups are wanting and what they’re asking for costs money, it could be up to $100,000 to create cubicles and council has decided it will not spend money on this.”

Drawing Santas from around the world, the three-day event hosts a range of activities including parades, a Santa Obstacle Course and shows at the Bakken amusement park. It also allows participants to discuss professional issues. “I think this year we need to talk about Santa having a few less cookies,” Santa Douglas, who arrived from Washington, said. “The chimneys are a little bit smaller now and 15-20 cookies is a few too many. Blood for tickets offer Romania is tapping into the Dracula legend, offering concertgoers free tickets in exchange for their blood. The campaign is part of a push to increase blood donations in a country where only 1.7 per cent of the people donate blood. Adrian Chereji, marketing director for the UNTOLD Festival, said the “Pay with Blood” campaign, jointly organised with the National Blood Transfusion Institute, aims to raise public awareness. Mobile blood collection units will be set up in 42 Romanian cities for 10 days this month. Donors in Bucharest and Cluj will be eligible for free tickets for an electro-dance music festival. Cut-price tickets will be offered to donors elsewhere.

Clooney’s surveillance plans hit hurdle George Clooney is facing objections to his plans to install 18 surveillance cameras on and around his property in England. The Hollywood star is preparing to move into the STG10 million luxury home in Sonning later this year with his lawyer wife Amal Alamuddin. The couple lodged planning paperwork for eight cameras to be placed on poles in the grounds of their property and a further 10 to be attached to the house itself. Each camera would be encased in a protective dome and could be faced in any direction, and the poles range in height from four to six metres. Officials at Eye and Dunsden Parish Council have objected to the plans because they represent “a potential infringement of the privacy of neighbouring properties” and the poles would intrude on the village’s conservation area. However, South Oxfordshire District Council’s conservation officer has advised that the proposal can go ahead as long as the cameras can be easily removed from the historic property. Clooney has already faced objections on renovations to his home, but was earlier this year given the green light to build a new swimming pool, pool house and private cinema.

Carol Burnett to be honoured at SAG awards Comedienne Carol Burnett is to be honoured with the 2015 Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. Thieves steal ATM then lose it Snohomish County authorities say two thieves suspected of stealing an ATM machine from a business made it as far as the parking lot, but the machine fell out of the getaway van. Sheriff ’s spokeswoman Shari Ireton said deputies have recovered the ATM machine. They believe two men backed up a white van to a business near Lynnwood at around 11am Sunday, cut the cables to the ATM and loaded it in to the van. Deputies believe the machine fell out of the van when the men drove too fast over a speed bump. The suspects drove away without it. Deputies found the van idling. It had been reported stolen from Kent. The van was impounded so deputies could look for evidence.

Twenty years of experience have been put on ice as Ashburton’s Wastebusters pulls the plug on its school education programme. It was a tough decision, but co-manager Sharon Breakwell said it could no longer afford to offer the service. “We’ve looked at this very carefully and decided we needed to focus on doing the things that will bring in income. We’ve done this for five years for nothing,” she said. For many years Wastebusters was contracted to run the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park and developed an education in schools programme as part of this. Five years ago it lost the contract to Mastagard which runs its own school programme. Wastebusters opted to continue its education programme, in the hope that it could regain the recovery park contract. It made a pitch to council this year when the contract came up for a two-year renewal, but it failed and that effectively spelled the end of the education programme, Ms Breakwell said. Wastebusters had four Ashburton schools with education programmes booked for this

term. It will continue to deliver education in the Selwyn District under a paid contract. The Ashburton District Council funds the Mastagard programme as part of its resource recovery park contract. “We’re not walking away, but we are stepping aside. We’ve had nothing from council for five years, not even any recognition for doing anything, so we need to be realistic,” she said. When the resource recovery park contract is renewed in 2017, Ms Breakwell hopes the

education progamme will be let as a separate contract rather than being lumped in with resource recovery. “We’ll focus for the next two years on what will bring money in. It’s the hardest thing we’ve had to do, stepping away from this, but it devalues what we do when we do it for nothing.” Council group service delivery manager Neil McCann said that as the contract holder for the resource recovery park and education, Mastagard received funding; Wastebusters did not. When Wastebusters elected

to continue with its education programme after losing the resource recovery park contract, it was made very clear that this would not be funded by council, he said. “They’re essentially blaming the council for not funding it but that they carried on doing it at no cost is certainly not our fault. We’re satisfied with the way Mastagard is doing this work.” Mr McCann is not keen to see resource recovery and education split, believing the two functions belong in one package.

Council and sports clubs lock horns From P1 Tomorrow at an extraordinary council meeting, councillors will look at five options for utilising Sports House, ranging from giving space away or trying to secure tenants for the open office space to converting the area and renting it out to

commercial tenants or leasing the area to a sports trust to sub-lease. Mr McCann’s recommendation is that the current lease offer runs for another six months and if there are no takers, then the space would be converted into offices that would generate

a commercial return. “We’re happy to work with people as our aim is to have as many sports groups as we can in there working as one sports hub, “But we have been approached by several people who are keen to open up and

have space to operate from in there,” he said. With the council planning to create new playing fields in the area around the stadium, Mr McCann said it made sense for those codes’ administration to be based in the stadium and that was still the council’s end game.

The Broadcasting Standards Authority has upheld a complaint about a Campbell Live episode about unresolved Canterbury earthquake insurance claims four years on from the first earthquake. The Broadcasting Standards Authority has upheld the Insurance Council of New Zealand’s (ICNZ) complaint that the programme breached standards of balance and accuracy because it did not include the insurance industry’s perspective and was misleading about the industry’s and ICNZ’s willingness to participate in the programme. - NZME

Sinkholes appear Four sinkholes have appeared within 150m of each other on a streetside berm in Westport. A Roebuck Street resident said the holes on the grass verge between Roebuck Street and the Westport Domain started appearing about six months ago, and were “getting bigger and bigger”. He said the holes were “quite sizeable slumps” and thought it would cost a lot of money to patch them up. - NZME

Urgent changes Parliament was urgently changing transport laws yesterday to amend an error that meant thousands of speeding tickets issued over the past 11 years could be invalid. Ministers said there was some confusion about local councils and other authorities’ powers to set speed limits through their bylaws. As a result, Parliament would pass legislation yesterday to clarify their legal power to set speed limits. Local Government Minister Paula Bennett said that after officials were alerted to the fact that some councils had failed to renew their speed limit bylaws, Government became aware of a potential problem with some speed limits set from 2004 onwards. - NZME

Mid Canterbury’s brightest students will now be able to access vital specialist services thanks to a collaborative approach by local schools. Tomorrow will mark the first day of the MindPlus programme for 32 intellectually and creatively gifted children in the district. Pupils from 15 primary schools will attend the programme, which aims to provide intellectual, creative, social and emotional support, at least one day per week. It is run by the New Zealand

Centre for Gifted Education and will be hosted at Ashburton Christian School. In the past individual schools have run their own gifted and talented programmes. However, a large group of local schools decided a collaborative approach was needed and joined together for the first time to create a cluster of schools, led by Methven Primary School principal Chris Murphy. Mr Murphy said it was “exciting” that schools would be able to access specialist support for their gifted students. “Schools put a lot of empha-

sis on students that struggle, and quite often those children who are at the top and are excelling, or might not be excelling but have the potential to excel, can be bypassed,” he said. While the programme costs $50 per day for each child, Mr Murphy was confident that the expense would not be a barrier for lower income families. Individual schools were working with parents on different funding options, he said. “Children from all backgrounds are able to access the programme, regardless of their personal circumstances,” he said.

Schools were also in discussion with members of the community about possible funding options, he said. While 15 of the district’s 20 primary schools have already signed up to the programme, Mr Murphy said it would be great to have the rest on board once it was up and running. In addition to running the MindPlus programme, the Mid Canterbury cluster will be supporting educators in the community to better understand gifted children and their learning, social, and emotional needs.

School ■ RANFURLY SHIELD principal Mid Canterbury supporters head to Napier resigns BY ERIN TASKER For the past 12 months, Jim Henderson has regretted not being there to watch Mid Canterbury’s Ranfurly Shield challenge against Counties-Manukau. So when Mid Canterbury won last year’s Meads Cup in the Heartland Rugby Championship and earned themselves the right to challenge for the shield for a second year running, nothing was going to keep him away from the game. He’s one of many Mid Canterbury rugby fans travelling to Napier for Thursday night’s shield challenge against Hawke’s Bay and he’s hoping they’ll see a historic win by the green and golds. Hawke’s Bay has already seen off challenges by two other Heartland teams over the past fortnight – Wairarapa Bush and Horowhenua Kapiti. “I think you’ll find that Hawke’s Bay are treating this game a little more seriously

than the other two, in that I think they will have much more of their ITM Cup squad there,” Henderson said. “But if we do bring the shield home, I think we need to change the name of East Street to Grant Keenan Street, and West Street to Jon Dampney Drive.” Keenan is the coach of the Mid Canterbury side, and Dampney the captain, and all of the Mid Canterbury supporters making the trip are hoping they’ll get to hear victory speeches from both following the game. “It would be absolutely amazing to see them win,” Henderson said. He believes if a Heartland team can do it, it’s Mid Canterbury. “They punch above their weight every year and each and every one of them has got a ticker the size of a horse.” Mid Canterbury fans not heading to Napier to see the match in person, will be able to catch it on the television, with live coverage on Sky Sport. The game kicks off at 7.35pm.

After 10 years with Ashburton Intermediate School Gavin Cooper has resigned from his role as principal. Mr Cooper started at the school early in 2005, taking over from Rex Whiting. He moved to the district from West Auckland, where he was deputy principal of Rangeview Intermediate. In a statement yesterday Mr Cooper said he and his wife had been contemplating a lifestyle change and their plans were now complete. As a result, he formally tendered his resignation. “The Board of Trustees have been informed and at this stage plans for the employment of a new principal are being formulated,” Mr Cooper said. This term will be his last Friday September 18 will mark his final day with the school. Before then there will be a lot of people to catch up with and thank, he said. “It’s been a good time,” he said.

Is there life after death? That is a question for which many would turn to their religious leaders for an answer. However, two high profile Uniting Church of Australia ministers visiting Ashburton say they do not know. The Reverend Dr Lorraine Parkinson and the Reverend Dr John Bodycomb are being hosted by St Paul’s and St James’ Presbyterian churches, and will hold several workshops over the next two weeks. “Nobody knows,” Dr Bodycomb said. “If there is, we will find out when we get there, if there isn’t, we won’t know there isn’t,” he added. The couple admit they have a reputation for rocking the boat of traditional Christianity, but make no apologies for addressing tough questions in unconventional ways. They said one of the biggest obstacles to faith for many was the apparent paradox of evil thriving in a world overseen by an all-powerful god. “It’s very complicated, but it’s entirely possible to say that a good god has created a world in

Plans for new rest home

Methven, but it is do-able, and we’re confident the community will get behind us to fast-track fundraising. Ideally we’d like to start the build within five years, but this will be dependent on funding,” she said. The new building will replace the existing community-run 13-bed Methven House, which has operated for nearly 40 years but is coming to the end of its useable life. Methven Care Trust proposes a new facility offering rest

home level care with 20 bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. There will be a mix of premium and standard size rest home rooms, and the complex has been designed so future stages can be added as funds allow and demand dictates. These future stages include a potential dementia wing, seniors’ rental flats and self-contained retirement villas. The new facility is to be built on gifted land at Camrose Estate.

An Auckland Transport official has been accused by the Serious Fraud Office of receiving bribes totalling more than $1 million, pending a High Court appeal. The man has pleaded not guilty to six charges of accepting bribes from engineering projects management company Projenz (2005) over more than five years to mid-2013, and has been remanded to reappear in the district court on August 6, as have co-defendants Barrie Kenneth James George and Stephen James Borlase. Borlase, 51, has stepped down temporarily as head of Projenz while facing eight charges. George, 68, has pleaded not guilty to four charges of accepting bribes. - NZME

Charges over death A Christchurch teenager has been charged with careless driving causing death after a 19-year-old passenger was killed in a crash on the West Coast in March. Police said the 17-year-old youth would appear in Westport District Court tomorrow. Waiau teenager Danny O’Donnell was killed in the crash on Tauranga Bay Rd in Westport on March 2. The driver has been charged with careless driving causing death, driving while suspended and three charges of careless driving causing injury. - NZME

There have been three tui sightings in Ashburton over the past two weeks, exciting conservationists and bird lovers. The sightings are rare, as the native birds are not known to live in the district. Ashburton resident Dyana Wagstaff spotted a tui as she was walking her dog in the Ashburton Domain yesterday, at about 1pm. She was on an island area which has native plantings, and saw the dark bird with a shiny blue-green sheen and white throat wattle, on a totara tree. “It was a surprise to see something different rather than sparrows and ducks,” she said. “It’s quite a novelty.” Ashburton resident Dave Strong said he spotted a tui on Monday at about 3pm, in a tree between the rear of the Maniao-Roto park and the Ashburton River. “I heard it for a start, I thought ‘I’m not familiar with that bird call’,” Mr Strong said. He then spotted the tui in a nearby tree.

The Forest and Bird member had lived in the Ashburton District for about 25 years and never seen a tui here. Ashburton District Council parks and open spaces manager David Askin has been in the role for 26 years and never known a tui to be in the domain before this winter. A domain visitor had reported to him about two weeks ago that they had seen a tui there.

Forest and Bird Ashburton committee member Val Clemens said tui, which would have lived in the Mid Canterbury foothills prior to European settlement, were today only infrequent visitors. The nearest populations were Geraldine, where there could be up to six in the native bush area there, and Banks Peninsula, where the birds had an established population which was spreading.

Methven skiers may next year have a bus stop of straw to shelter in while they wait for transport to Mt Hutt. The bus stop is a proposed project for delegates who will attend the International Straw Building Conference in the town in March. Organisers have chosen Methven as the destination for the first conference to be held in New Zealand, due to its agricultural attributes and high quality conference facilities. “It’s the heart of the grain growing country in Canterbury,” said conference organising committee member Tim Bishop. The Dunedin engineer said the conference was held every four years, and the last one was in Colorado in 2012. Next year’s conference was being hosted by the New Zealand Earth Building Association, and there would be a number of international experts talking on topics relating to building with straw and

other natural materials. As part of the conference lead-up there would be a national competition for tertiary students and young professionals to design a bus stop, which could be built in Methven as a way of thanking the town for hosting the event. Organisers were planning on finding funding for the project. There is no one cause for obesity and that’s the biggest challenge, says an Ashburton health promoter. Angela Leadley, health promoter for Ashburton’s Community and Public Health said while a lack of physical activity was part of the nation’s obesity problem, there was more to it than that. “You can’t define what the problem is because the reality is if there was one solution to fix this, we would have done it,” Mrs Leadley said. “Physical activity is part of the problem, but it’s not necessarily a large part of the problem.” Food and how much we are eating is also an issue, but so is the environment we live in, she said. Her comments come off the back of talk around restricting junk food advertising in New Zealand, something Community and Public Health were in support of. According to the New Zealand Health Survey 2013-2014, 11 per cent of New Zealand children are obese, up from 8.4 per cent in 2007 and 31 per cent of adults were obese. In Ashburton, Community and Public Health have a number of initiatives in place to help people make healthy choices. While Mrs Leadley said Community and Public Health did not run programmes as such, it did work with groups in the community. That included working with schools to get canteens selling healthy options and supporting people to walk and bike to work or school. “We’re working in terms of creating an environment that supports healthy choices,” she said. If people are concerned about their weight, or a family member’s weight they should speak to their GP or practice nurse. Mrs Leadley said there were locally run programmes as well, such as Appetite for Life - a six week course focusing on healthy eating.

Time for re-think for trust Stu Oldham

he Ashburton Trust must again re-evaluate how it makes and spends its money as it enters another tough year. The trust this week confirmed a $300,000 loss from $18.6 million in turnover last financial year and warned the forth-coming year was likely to be at least as challenging. The Ashburton District Council’s new alcohol policy will close bars earlier, stricter drink driving laws will dent sales and compliance costs will grab from the bottom line. And these are the things that the trust can plan for. The potentially significant unknowns include the impact of the dairy downturn and even a later start at the meat processing plants. The trust knows it must plan for a year in which discretionary spending slows and when bars, restaurants, hotels and motels must make the most of what custom comes their way. That is, it knows that it will have to keep costs down if it is to maximise its return to make good on its pledge to reinvest, through sponsorship and support, in its community. The trust has already identified the areas in which it must tread carefully. The Speight’s Ale House revamp and the Hotel Ashburton upgrades will be tackled with added caution. But while it will look at reinvestment and how it trades over the next while, it must also look at how well its investments are performing and whether they can be put to better use. It recently closed the underperforming Shed nightclub – surely a site ripe for development – and it will run its finger through the books of the venues some might hope would be doing better. Then, the trust will have to consider whether it refocuses and hopes for the best, or whether it should look for new business opportunities or even turn landlord to its competition. The next year will be challenging but, as Mr Lilley said, how the trust reacts will be key – not just to how it weathers the slowdown, but to what business it becomes.

ne of the most important measures for any business is customer satisfaction, and Ashburton District Council is no different. The results from our 2015 Annual Residents’ Survey were reported in June. To get a robust and representative opinion, the survey company spoke to 383 people who were selected by age, gender and the area in the district where they live. Findings showed 92 per cent of people surveyed were satisfied with the performance of council staff, and 86 per cent reported being satisfied with their contact with council staff. As the council’s chief executive officer, these figures tell me we are on the right track and have a good understanding of how important our customers are to us. We have a council customer services team (a manager and six full-time staff) dedicated to helping people throughout the district with enquiries about council’s services. On an average day, the team handles about 530 enquiries via phone, email, and counter visits. These numbers increase at times when rates or dog registrations are due; some days like final rate instalment days, over 600 customers visit our front reception to make payments. Over 80 per cent of all calls we receive are about rates, water, roading, waste, animals, building inspections, noise control, and parking. We try to maintain a customer services team who have the knowledge and expertise to answer over 85 per cent of these enquiries without the need of having to pass the customer onto another council officer in another department. However, specialist technical issues often in relation to resource or building consents do usually need to be referred to our staff in those departments. The customer services team also deal with processing minor applications for street stalls, issuing parking permits and me-

As the council hasn’t introduced wheelie bin collections yet, it didn’t take too long to work out that the customer was in fact calling from Ashburton, Melbourne, Australia. Every year when we receive the residents’ survey findings, we take the time to look at what our residents are telling us; what is going well and what is not going so well. While we are fortunate to have received a strong satisfaction rating for staff performance, as an organisation our aim is to not only maintain our high customer services satisfaction results, but to improve them. Civilians hit by shelling The death toll in Yemen from the Shiite rebel shelling of a town near the southern port city of Aden rose to nearly 100, the head of an international aid group said, describing it as “the worst day” for the city and its surroundings in over three months of fighting. The rebels, known as Houthis, and their allies started shelling the town of Dar Saad on Sunday after earlier losing control of some of Aden’s neighbourhoods. The violence highlighted the bloody chaos of the civil war gripping the Arab world’s poorest country, which also has been the target of Saudi-led, US-backed airstrikes since late March. Hassan Boucenine of the Geneva-based Doctors Without Borders said that by Monday, his organisation reported

The shelling also wounded about 200 people, said Boucenine, the head of the organisation in Yemen. Of the victims, 80 per cent are civilians, including many pregnant women, elderly and children, he added. “Yesterday was the worst day in Aden since (the Saudi-led coalition campaign) started in March,” Boucenine told The Associated Press, adding that he fears “attacks on civilians will continue.” Monday’s heavy shelling in Dar Saad began after the Houthi rebels lost control of much of the Aden district of Tawahi, according to officials and witnesses. Tawahi is now under a security lockdown, the officials said, as anti-Houthi forces search buildings looking for rebels, some of whom had fled to the nearby mountains.

Overnight, the Saudi-led coalition targeted Houthi positions north of Aden and in Dar Saad, killing at least 55 rebels, officials and witnesses said. The coalition also struck the home of Mehdi Meqlawa, a prominent supporter of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, in a Sanaa suburb. In the Yemeni capital, it also hit Houthi headquarters near the Souq Aziz market, killing one person. Rebel shelling continued in Taiz, Yemen’s third-largest city, killing eight residents, while ground fighting raged on in Marib, with six anti-Houthi tribesmen and 10 Houthi fighters killed in clashes. An industry insider said the British culinary expert, TV star and anti-childhood obesity campaigner had picked Queen’s Rise in the ex-BNZ building at 125 Queen Street, opposite the end of Shortland Street, in the CBD. In April, Oliver was reported as saying he would open a branch in Auckland next year but he was said to be “tight-lipped” about the location. Milk forecast down Open Country Dairy, New Zealand’s second biggest milk processor after Fonterra, has revised its forecast down sharply in the wake of the last two very weak Global DairyTrade (GDT) auctions. Cereal maker expands Kiwi cereal maker Smartfoods is about to shift into a new factory that will treble production capacity as part of a five-year plan to boost revenue to $50 million from $15.7m by jumping on a trend towards healthier eating. Smartfoods, which has around 50 staff, has grown at a compounded annual growth rate of 36.5 per cent since its first full year of trading in 2005/06 and exports account for more than a third of revenue. The company has the licence to manufacture Vogel’sbranded cereals in New Zealand and China, makes a Hillary-branded cereal range where royalties go to the Ed Hillary Charitable Trust, and will launch its own branded cereals in the next two months. - NZME

No-one from Meadow saw the data on the phone tracking reported by the victim’s husband nor did they interview the husband to verify his information. Meadow simply relied on an indirect report of what the husband had said. The haste and the lack of investigation led to a suspicion that Meadow considered that it had sufficient proof that Mr Lim took the phone even before it held its meeting to hear his explanation. The ERA ruled Mr Lim was unjustifiably dismissed. Mr Lim sought compensation for hurt and humiliation of $30,000. The Authority awarded $3000 compensation plus lost wages of $4839.

Compensation after mushroom harvester unfairly dismissed mushroom harvester who was accused of stealing a colleague’s mobile phone, wallet and money cards has won a case of unfair dismissal after his bosses failed to investigate the allegations property. Sothy ‘David’ Lim had worked for Christchurch-based Meadow Mushrooms Ltd for 20 years when the incident happened in August last year. The victim’s husband was able to track the phone using find-my-phone software. Two of Meadow’s managers drove to the address to see if they could find the phone. The address was a lodge where Mr Lim, the mushroom harvester, lived. Employment Relations Authority member, Christine Hickey, said the managers were entitled to ask to see Mr Lim. However, Ms Hickey considers their telling the security guard at the lodge that they were trying to find a missing phone coupled with asking to see Mr Lim was a breach of the employer’s duty of good faith to maintain trust and confidence between them and Mr Lim.

Parsnips at their best

Creamy parsnip bake 800g parsnips, peeled 400ml milk 200ml cream 200ml vegetable stock 4 t wholegrain mustard 4 T grated Parmesan cheese Grated nutmeg ■ Slice enough parsnips thinly lengthways to cover the surface of a small ovenproof dish ■ Slice the rest thinly into rounds. ■ Combine the milk, cream, stock, mustard and half the cheese in a large, lidded saucepan ■ Bring to the boil. ■ Add a good grating of nutmeg and a pinch of salt. ■ Add parsnips. ■ When the cream is simmering again, cover and cook for 6 mins. ■ Using tongs fish out the long slices of parsnip and set aside. ■ Tip the rest into your dish, and then arrange the long slices over the top ■ Scatter with the rest of the cheese and another grating of nutmeg. ■ Bake at 180°C for 1 hr, then turn up to 200°C and brown for 15 minutes more.

Salt and pepper ■ Boil vegetables until tender. ■ Add milk and butter ■ Roughly mash, leaving small chunks of different vegetables within the mix. ■ Add salt and pepper and serve.

Parsnip puffs 1kg mashed parsnip (in a food processor best) 1 egg, beaten Salt and pepper 120g grated cheese 1 finely chopped onion Finely chopped parsley 1 extra egg, beaten ■ Mix altogether. ■ Leave in fridge for 1-2 hours to firm. ■ Shape into balls, roll in flour, and roll in extra beaten egg then breadcrumbs. ■ Fry in fry pan or deep fryer until golden (or heat in oven for more a healthy option).

chopped a thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger, peeled and roughly chopped 2 t garam masala 6 parsnips, peeled and chopped into chunks 500ml milk or coconut milk 1 litre vegetable stock salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 t minced chilli fresh coriander leaves ■ Heat a splash of olive oil and the butter in a large saucepan. ■ Add the onion, garlic, ginger, garam masala and chilli ■ Gently fry for around 10 minutes, until the onions are soft and sweet. ■ Drop in the chopped parsnip and stir together so that everything gets coated in the oil and flavours. ■ Pour in the milk and stock, season well and bring to the boil. ■ Turn down the heat and simmer for 30 minutes with a lid on. ■ After half an hour, check that the parsnips are cooked by sticking a knife in. ■ Remove from heat and whiz up using a hand blender or liquidizer. ■ Taste the soup to see if it needs a little more salt or pepper. ■ Serve with a sprinkling of coriander leaves.

Play a spellbinding tale Wellington playwright Ralph McCubbin Howell is bringing his award-winning one-man show, The Bookbinder, to Ashburton as part of a nationwide tour this week. The Bookbinder uses puppetry, props, light, shadow, and the imagination to create a performance which has been renowned for its masterful storytelling. The Bookbinder has won Best Theatre and Best in Fringe at the New Zealand Fringe Awards, an International Ex-

cellence Award at the Sydney Fringe and most recently the BDO Children’s Theatre award at the Fringe World in Perth. Aimed at audiences of all ages, The Bookbinder begins with an old man sitting down to read a tale of an apprentice. As he speaks, the story spills from the pages and into the bindery, and among experiences enjoyed by the audience is the magic of a pop-up book, finding an eagle in the shadows created by a lamp and an ocean hiding in a jug of water.

Director Hannah Smith said the saying was that you could get lost in a good book, but it was worse getting lost in a bad one. “We loved the idea of doing something intimate and personally engaging – like the experience you have when you actually read a book,” she said. Arts on Tour New Zealand (AOTNZ) is a trust which organises tours of outstanding New Zealand performers to rural and smaller centres in New Zealand.

It receives funding from Creative New Zealand, support from Interislander, and liaises with local arts councils, repertory theatres and community groups to bring the best of musical and other talent to country districts. The AOTNZ initiative prides itself on being environmentally sustainable, as the artists travel to their audiences rather than the other way around. The Bookbinder will stage at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Friday at 7pm. Tickets are $17.

Colourful paper flowers brighten up winter Paper flowers in shades of pink, yellow, white and red are gracing Ashburton town-centre premises, their lightness offsetting the greyness of a cold winter. Hanging the flowers at the Ashburton i-SITE last week are (from left) Simone Barnsdale of the Ashburton Art Gallery, and paper flower creators Jessica Cowan, 12, Diana Barbu, 14, and Jessica’s mum Haydee Cowan. At number eight, Jon Dampney returns from injury to take on the role of captain again, a year after captaining the side in a Ranfurly Shield challenge against Counties-Manukau, where the men in green and gold showed that they had what it took to stick it with the top tier teams for most of the match. He leads a team boasting a mix of youth and experience, with Tama Tuirirangi’s 17 years of senior rugby and two previous shield challenges leading the way in the front row, while at first-five, former Japanese international, now Auckland based, Murray Williams returns to steer the ship. Warriors’ injury concerns growing David Fusitua will not play in Saturday’s home fixture with Manly after picking up a knee injury in the Warriors 24-0 defeat to the Roosters on Sunday. He joins the growing list of players on the treatment table as coach Andrew McFadden confirmed that Manu Vatuvei and Ryan Hoffman still remain out of contention.

Chad Townsend missed training with a groin injury that he’s been nursing in recent weeks but he’s expected to be fit for Saturday. Charlie Gubb is still doubtful and centre Konrad Hurrell will miss this weekend, after he was charged with a grade one striking offence in the New South Wales Cup.

It was Hurrell’s first game since sustaining a shoulder injury in training a few weeks ago but he should be available again after he serves a one match suspension. This means McFadden will have to call for more back up in yet another reshuffle to the back-line. Fusitua had been covering for Hurrell at right

Benji commits to Kiwis Kiwis playmaker Benji Marshall has emphatically denied reports that he is considering changing his international allegiance to Scotland. The Dragons stand-off, who has played 27 tests for New Zealand, was reported to have met with Scotland coach Steve McCormack in June. According to Rugby League Week, 30-year-old Marshall has Scottish ancestry. Quintana blasts outsiders Tour de France contender Nairo Quintana has branded Warren Barguil as irritating after the young Frenchman caused a frightening crash on a difficult descent in the 16th stage. The 22-year-old Barguil lost control on a tight corner on the breakneck downhill run into the finish of the 201km stage and knocked Geraint Thomas off the road. The Welshman hit his head on a lamppost as he fell off, but he carried onto the finish, incredibly losing only 38 seconds. “I’m OK, I just hit my head on a lamppost but I’m alright,” said the chirpy 29-year-old. Big game for rugby nomad By Erin TaskEr After a season in a new position, Scott Vessey never dreamt he’d be playing rugby for Mid Canterbury in a Ranfurly Shield challenge this week. The 29-year-old has been a front rower all his life, apart from a year at number eight when he was younger, but a bad back prompted him to switch to the loose forwards this year. It took some getting used to, but he’s found his groove and tomorrow night he’ll take a starting position in the loose forwards for Mid Canterbury in the shield challenge against Hawke’s Bay in Napier. Vessey – an Ashburton College old boy – left Mid Canterbury after high school and has played rugby around the country, and abroad, since. But just over a year ago he returned to Mid Canterbury, and to the club where he spent his young playing days – Southern. His injured back kept him out of the Mid Canterbury team last season, and could have ended his career. “A scrum is not very good for a back when you’ve got a good one,” he said. But moving to the loose forwards meant the stress that life as a front rower had put on his back had been lessened, and his playing career lengthened. It’s a career that has taken him further than he ever expected. He moved to Christchurch

after leaving school and played club and age grade representative rugby, before being picked up by Northland, and spending three seasons playing for the Taniwhas. “I wasn’t really expecting it. “I was about 25 and thought I had missed the boat,” Vessey said. After three years with Northland he spent a season playing rugby in Spain, before returning to Mid Canterbury. He’s no stranger to Ranfurly Shield challenges. Tomorrow’s will be his second; the first was a couple of years ago when he was playing for Northland. It was against Waikato in the first game of that year’s ITM Cup and the challenge was unsuccessful. But Vessey and his team-mates head to Napier full of belief that they have what it takes to win the shield off the Magpies. They’ve all watched the first two challenges of the season – Hawke’s Bay’s wins over Wairarapa Bush and Horowhenua Kapiti – and they know what to expect. “The key will be sticking with them. “We can’t be happy to go up there and just compete. “We want to win,” Vessey said. Mid Canterbury will challenge Hawke’s Bay for the Ranfurly Shield in Napier tomorrow night at 7.35pm, with television coverage live on Sky Sport.

Rebels grab Retallick The Melbourne Rebels have signed their second New Zealand forward in as many days, with lock Culum Retallick switching from the Blues on a two-year deal. Retallick has made nearly 50 Super Rugby appearances since debuting for the Chiefs in 2010. TIME IS RUNNING OUT - RE-REGISTER YOUR DOGS It’s that time of year again when dogs need to be registered and to help make this easier and quicker for dog owners, we are encouraging re-registrations using our pay it online service. All dogs over three months of age are required to be registered with us, including all farm dogs. Alternatively, you can register your dogs by filling in and returning the registration form mailed to you at the beginning of July or by coming into the Council offices. Please note that if there are changes to your dog’s registration this year e.g. a change of address, you can only pay it in person at the Council offices. To learn more, visit ashburtondc.govt.nz

Dearly loved wife of the late Harry Harrison and the late Colin McLaughlin. Onwards and definitely upwards. That’s the message out of Team Fox, after the sterling debut by Ryan Fox in the British Open golf championship. The Auckland golfer’s father Grant was not only a great All Black, but renowned as one of the most driven, competitive and detail-orientated footballers of his age, as rugby prepared itself for full professionalism.
