East St assault accused faces fresh charge The teenager charged with assaulting Jeff Hill in a high profile attack on East Street earlier this year has been remanded in custody, after appearing in the Ashburton District Court on a fresh charge. Vincent James Kuru Nathan, aged 18, has been held in custody since July 10. Yesterday he appeared before Judge Joanna Maze for sentencing direction on the two assault charges which he admitted at his last appearance. Kuru Nathan was also allocated time for a case review hearing on a charge of wounding with intent to injure – which he continues to deny. A new charge of unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle has been added to the list since the June 10 appearance, when he was remanded on bail. The charge relates to offending earlier this month. The assault charges were laid following an assault on Mr Hill in the early hours of March 23. The Ashburton father sustained
serious head injuries and was hospitalised in Christchurch for several weeks. Kuru Nathan’s lawyer Marilyn Gilchrist said she would be making an application for electronically monitored bail if a suitable address could be found, however that was proving difficult. The accused took exception to being returned to custody and could be heard loudly objecting in the court cells for several hours. Judge Maze discussed the possibility of transferring the case to the Timaru District Court to expedite matters, but police prosecutor Sergeant Mike Wingfield raised the difficulty and expense of getting police witnesses to an out-of-town venue. After some juggling court officials came up with a suitable date, and Judge Maze set down September 1 as the start of a hearing on the wounding with intent charge. She also directed sentencing reports to be prepared on the other matters.
