Three face theft, burglary charges BY KATIE TODD

Three individuals are facing charges in relation to 44 separate burglaries and thefts from vehicles in Ashburton earlier this year. One woman and two men will appear before the courts next week, following a spate of crimes throughout the town in January and February. Police identified the three individuals during ongoing investigations into thefts from cars, burglaries from residential addresses and the use of stolen payWave cards.

Ashburton residents at 44 different addresses had reported their missing wallets, handbags, work tools and other items to police, and police had acknowledged a “spike in crimes”. The three individuals are known to each other and two are currently in custody, Detective Sergeant Leigh Jenkins said. They are believed to be locals. During investigations, police executed a number of search warrants, and have recovered a significant quantity of the items reported stolen. As there are still a number of items

with no identified owners, Jenkins said Ashburton Police Station are intending to hold an open day. Those with missing property will be able to visit the station, view the recovered property, and identify if any of the belongings are theirs. Open day details will be confirmed next week. Jenkins said it would be likely one of the biggest-scale property seizures he has seen in Ashburton in recent years. Police were unable to provide any further comment on the charges, as the matter is now before the courts.
