Ashburton’s petrol station owners are among those taking measures to combat increasing numbers of thefts from their stations. As climbing petrol prizes put the squeeze on motorists, more are choosing to thieve their way to a full tank.

Across the country, service stations recorded a 24 per cent increase in thefts and drive-offs in the first five months of this year and BP Ashburton is among stations now using extra security measures. Owner Rasek Ganda said his station has implemented an alert system – giving station staff the ability to more
closely monitor the pumps at nighttime. It follows what he said was a notable increase in thefts a couple of months ago.
