HOMICIDE By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz

Big, bad Indian MOTORING

A homicide investigation launched yesterday morning following the death of a Rakaia man at least 24 hours earlier remained shrouded in mystery late into last night. Emergency services were called to a Gardiners Road address, east of Rakaia, shortly after 9am on Wednesday morning where they found a 29-year-old man, believed to have been shot, dead at the scene. Police were unable to confirm the incident to the Guardian when questioned on Wednesday night and issued a release early yesterday stating they had launched a homicide investigation following the death. owned by Dairy Holdings Limited and Central Canterbury Farm operations manager Gary McGregor said they were offering all the support they could to those involved. “We are just trying to support the guys on the farm, the sharemilker has been wondering if there is anything he could’ve done, but I don’t think there is,” he said. McGregor confirmed that the deceased man (who has been named by some media outlets, but no name has been officially released at this point) wasn’t at work on Wednesday morning and another worker, who had gone to look for him, found him at the property and alerted emergency services. He added that the man had made a valuable input to the farm and was well

liked by his colleagues. “That is a pretty shocking thing if you have never seen a dead body before,” McGregor added. “He was a good worker, he was fairly new to us, everyone is pretty upset and there is no real obvious reason for why this should have happened. “He was well liked by his mates and had two young kids and a partner who he had recently separated from. “It is pretty worrying with young kids involved.” Late last night the police were unable to provide any further information or updates on the situation, however, did say that they hoped to issue a statement later in the evening. This didn’t arrive in time for the Guardian deadline.
