Gang stoush at court Ashburton Police were yesterday called to a gang-related stoush that erupted outside the Ashburton District Court. The scuffle broke out after Chase Carlio Burton, 23, pleaded guilty in court to a rioting charge after an incident in Davis Crescent in August, that involved Black Power and Mongrel Mob members. Ashburton police sergeant Janine Bowden said police were called to the courthouse around 10.30am yesterday, to an incident that was said to be gang related.
There were two factions fighting and there were a number of people “fairly overtly” wearing the colour red, however there were no gang patches or other obvious paraphernalia, Ms Bowden said. After the police arrived the two parties quickly separated and one left the scene. Police spoke to a number of people who were present, however no formal complaints were laid, but police are continuing their investigations and will look at CCTV footage, Ms Bowden said.

Burton and Cody Nathan John Tihema, 24, both appeared before Judge Brian Callaghan on charges of rioting following a gang-related incident on August 27. The incident, between Black Power members, wearing blue, and Mongrel Mob members, wearing red, occurred at a park on Davis Crescent, Netherby, at 3.40pm. Eight people armed with a variety of items, including baseball bats and golf clubs, and wearing blue items of clothing entered the park.

One member had their face covered with a blue bandanna and was carrying a blue baseball bat. A confrontation ensued with a group of about six people who were also armed with a variety of items including a baseball bat and an axe, and wearing red items of clothing. One member also had their face covered with a red bandanna and was carrying a red baseball bat. The violence alarmed neighbours and resulted in numerous calls to the police. One of the par-
ties involved was taken to hospital with a head injury sustained in the incident. Police seized two baseball bats, a wooden fence post, a half round length of wood, a golf club broken into two sections, a length of black piping and a wooden broom handle. Burton and Tihema both entered guilty pleas and were remanded, bail to continue, to reappear in the Ashburton District Court on November 16, 2015. Tihema also appeared on a drink-driving charge.
