Funding partnerships the way of the future

Commercial sponsorship will become an increasingly big player in the business plans of many schools, says Ashburton College principal Ross Preece.

While schools were granted a pool of money each year from the Ministry of Education, there was a growing disconnect between the money granted and a school’s needs, he said, and bridging that shortfall means looking to other funding sources.

For the college, this is likely to be greater financial commitment from the community. This has already started and from next year the school will offer an outdoor education programme for senior students and this is being funded through the support of local outdoor business Hunting and Fishing.

The course will include modules in fishing, marksmanship, firearm safety as well as skiing and a range of other out-

tutor in a specialist area and for a small group of students.

“If we can’t get sponsorship we will struggle because we’re looking at a shortfall in funding so when we do our budget we have to ask ourselves, is it important for kids to have the opportunity to take part in Phoenix Chorus or to go on trips.

We need to find sponsors to ensure that things are available to all kids, free.”

The last thing the college wanted was to levy charges on students to take part in those activities as that would put pressure on families, he said.

“I’m looking to create relationships with the community, not just sporting but cultural too.”

Life-saving device arrives at Netherby Four Square

When Shaun and Taryn McFadden bought the Netherby Four Square store, number one on their long list of must-do items was to have an in-store defibrillator.

And now, thanks to a South Island-wide drive by Four Square, The McFaddens have a defibrillator installed, one that will be easily accessed by the wider community.

Rather than have the life-saving device in store, they’ve opted to place it in the entrance area to ensure it was more easily available.

“This part of the shop is open enough that people can just run in and grab it if there’s an emergency,” Taryn McFadden said.

Netherby is one of 61 Four Square stores around the South Island that now have a defibrillator available.

The company has taken its role as the commercial heart of many South Island communities to a whole new level, investing more than $200,000 in St John automated external defibrillators.

“It’s a life-saving piece of equipment. The hospital is over the other side of town and we have a lot of elderly customers and there are also other shops in this area so it’s

quite busy,” McFadden said.

While the defibrillator has been installed at Four Square, it’s a community asset and that’s why it was important to have it in an area where it would be very accessible, she said.

“Where we’ve placed it, it’s literally see it, grab it.”

Each year more than 2000 New Zealanders suffer a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital and the use of a defibrillator within three to five minutes of collapse can increase the chance of survival by up to 40 per cent, said Four Square group manager Steve Alexander.

“Making the decision to work with St John to keep the hearts of our local communities pumping made perfect sense to us,” he said.

The investment in defibrillators is another community investment for the company. Over the past six years it has given more than $700,000 worth of support for the St John free shuttle transport for South Islanders, enabling them to better access essential services.

“We count it a privilege to continue the Four Square South Island and St John relationship as we both share very similar values of looking after all our locals throughout the mainland,” Alexander said.

Mt Hutt named best ski resort

Mt Hutt has triumphed at the World Ski Awards for the third consecutive year, once again voted New Zealand’s best ski resort.

The award was received yesterday by Deidra O’Shea and husband Carl “Fish” McHugh, who are Mt Hutt’s administration and maintenance heads of department respectively, at a glitzy gala event in Kitzbühel, Austria.

Bottling plant plan rises again

Entrepreneur Roydon Hartnett may have failed in his attempt to establish a water bottling plant in Ashburton but he has taken the first step in getting a new water bottling project off the ground in the central North Island.

His company Murupara No1 has leased land on which two water bottling plants will be built, pending approval. The proposed operation will be located on land owned by Ngati Manawa in Murupara near Rotorua and will recover water that is currently unallocated.

This area has faced decades of decline in its economy and in population and job opportunities.

Ngati Manawa is an equity partner in the new business that will generate $4 million annually in iwi and community grants and $4 million over three years for a work start training programme.

Each plant is expected to create more than 250 jobs.

Hartnett is committed to paying employees the proposed $20.20 per hour pay rate.

A resource consent will be lodged early next week with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council that will seek approval to install a bore to access the ground water which is 100 metres underground.

For the consent to be given the council must be satisfied that any affected party gives approval and that it has been clearly established that it will not adversely affect the water resource.

Hartnett said there were already several investors involved in the project, including a mix of local

and overseas interests pending overseas investment office approval.

“We’re determined to include as many New Zealand investors as possible,” he said.

Hartnett said he shared New Zealanders’ concerns about the ownership of New Zealand’s water, but the Murupara plan involved iwi, community, the government and his company working together to deliver community rejuvenation.

“This water bottling plant will deliver real benefits for families and communities not only in Murupara and the Eastern Bay of Plenty, but all over the North Island. It will mean more highvalue jobs for our children, more taxes for the government and more security for the future.”

There were two choices, taking the opportunity to use this water and make the most of it or accepting the economic decline in the area and letting the water flow back out to sea, Hartnett said.

He sees the Murupara project as having the potential to change the way New Zealanders feel about bottled water exports.

Last year a land deal between Hartnett and the Ashburton District that would have seen land in the North East Business Park sold and a water bottling plant developed fell over on the back of a groundswell of community opposition.

Harnett anticipated up to 200 jobs would have been created at the plant. He also signalled he would fund the relocation of Ashburton’s inner town rail shunting yard to the business estate.

Ready for newcomers’ challenge

When Israeli couple Adi and Eti Avnit decided to raise their two sons in a country where the environment was calm and the pace of life was slower, they chose New Zealand.

General practitioner Eti had job offers across the country, but the family decided to build their lives as Kiwis in Ashburton.

“Her (Eti’s) job is the reason we’ve come to Ashburton. We liked Ashburton because it was a small community and people are friendly. If we need something from the city, it’s just up the road,” Avnit said.

Ten months down the track they know they’ve made the right decision and Avnit is one week into his new job as the district’s newcomers’ network co-ordinator. For him finding a good balance between work and family life was key. In Israel he worked as a software developer but continuing his career in New Zealand would have meant commuting to Christchurch each day.

still there for the children, it’s perfect,” he said.

Avnit has taken over the co-ordinator’s role from Sophie Claire Violette and says he has “big shoes to fill”.

He’s no stranger to the group’s work, however, having been a volunteer since May. The organisation has a data base of around 200 on its website with another 500 Facebook members, but Avnit knows there are many more newcomers in the community who could be part of the network.

‘We have more room to reach more people, there are so many people to reach.”

Avnit knows that many newcomers quickly assimilate into their new community making friends amongst their fellow countrymen and with Kiwis, but for just as many, adapting to a new life in a new land is difficult, he said.

He’s aware that many newcomers may feel isolated, through lack of English language skills, because they cannot drive or simply because they do not feel

confident mixing with other people. He says it’s his mission, to find ways to connect people and to empower them to be part of their new community.

“I want people to contact us, to let us know if they have ideas that can be included in our newsletters and to contact us about the help they might need. We’re here to provide information but getting the information to the people who need it is not always easy.”

Loneliness and a sense of isolation were two big issues for many newcomers who could feel they were cut adrift from their own people in a world of strangers, Avnit said.

“That’s the problem we’re trying to solve. That’s my job, connecting people.”

When the Avnit family arrived in New Zealand in December both parents were fluent English speakers but their children, Adam, 9, and Rom, 4, were not.

Adam is now attending Allenton School and has become pretty proficient at his second language, Avnit said.

HNZ house coming down

After sitting boarded up and derelict since February, a Housing New Zealand property on Allens Road is in the process of being demolished.

It is unclear, however, what shape a rebuild on the large section will take.

Housing New Zealand communications and stakeholder manager Glenn Conway said the organisation was considering redevelopment options that could make better use of the site in the future.

“No decisions have been reached yet but we will undertake to inform the community of our plans once they are finalised,” he said.

Ashburton Fire Brigade was alerted to a fire in the semi-detached house on February 2 after neighbours heard smoke alarms going off.

When the fire service arrived the fire was fully engaged. All occupants of the property and its neighbour were accounted for.

The fire had taken hold in the ceiling and smoke was coming through the roof tiles of the adjourning flat, creating a challenge for firefighters. Up to 30 firefighters were involved in battling the blaze which had taken hold in the ceiling and was threatening the adjourning unit.

Allens Road was blocked off from the Elizabeth Street intersection to clear the way for firefighters and a large crowd had gathered on the street to watch the event unfold.

Following an extensive scene examination, Ashburton police confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire’s origins.

Tinwald fire The Ashburton Fire Brigade was called out twice to a property on Thomson Street in Tinwald on Saturday. Chief Fire Officer Alan Burgess said both calls were the result of a fire in a standalone garage. The first was at about 2.45pm, with firefighters returning about an hour and a half later after more smoke was spotted. Burgess said there was nothing suspicious about the fire, which was restricted to the garage and its contents.

Lotto windfall Two Lotto players from Hamilton and Hokitika have won $500,000 in Saturday’s Lotto First Division draw, with the winning tickets sold at Grey Street Supermarket in Hamilton and Hokitika New World. A Strike Four player from Ashburton will also have a little more cash to splash after winning $300,000. No one struck the Powerball, so the jackpot has grown to $38 million. If the $38 million is won next week, it will be the second-largest prize won by a single ticket holder.

Minister marks mine disaster anniversary

Family members and locals have held a ceremony at the gate to the Pike River Mine to acknowledge the seven-year anniversary of the explosion that killed 29 men.

Minister Responsible for Pike River Re-entry Andrew Little was there to present a key to the gates of the mine in a symbolic gesture of giving power back to the families.

“We all know, and we’ve known for seven years that what happened at Pike River was totally preventable, totally avoidable and it was a gross act of

corporate negligence that led to it – and we haven’t got all the answers yet,” Mr Little, a former union boss, said.

Mr Little told the crowd that cabinet would be making decisions on Pike River re-entry today and he would have further details to announce in time.

Spokesman for the Pike River families, Bernie Monk accepted the key from Mr Little alongside other family members who had lost loved ones in the disaster.

Mr Monk made a special mention of Helen Kelly, former president of the New Zealand

Council of Trade Unions who campaigned strongly for Pike River Coal to be held accountable. She died in 2016.

Last month Mr Little said a manned re-entry of the Pike River Mine may be attempted early next year.

Both Labour and NZ First campaigned during the election on the promise of re- entering the mine.

The previous National-led government had refused to send men into the mine, saying current owner Solid Energy considered it too risky.

A 42-year-old man has died after he was struck by a vehicle on SH2, near Pukekohe. Emergency services were called to the highway just after 2am yesterday.

The exact cause of the incident has yet to be established but it is believed he was struck by a vehicle.

Missing man sought Police have serious concerns for missing 33-year-old Rotorua man Nigel Peterson. He was last seen about 3pm on Friday on Otonga Road in Rotorua, heading towards Old Taupo Road. Mr Peterson is autistic. His father told the Rotorua Daily Post his son was moving to a new supervised home in Rotorua and ran from a caregiver at the new property.

Without people choosing to buy their shoes locally, Carolyn Ewing and Moana Taylor say they wouldn’t still be in business.

As retailers of 13 years standing, the boutique shoe shop owners understand the importance of loyal local customers and say that in return they go out of their way to ensure they also do their shopping on local turf.

Every town is its own small economy and the cogs of that economy stop turning if people start taking their business out of town, Moana said.

But local retailers can’t expect loyal local customers if they don’t provide the absolutely best of service, she said.

“We make it our mission to help people find the shoes that will work for them. It’s all about service.”

Living by the great service motto also means Stepping Out has developed a large out-of-town client base.

Like every other business, the women say theirs faces competition from not just out-oftown shops but also online retailers, but they’re confident that the personal touch that comes with a small shop keeps customers coming back.

Knowing their regular customers makes shopping a much more personal experience, she said.

“They value our opinion and we are honest with them and they appreciate that.”

And shopping locally also means customers can take shoes home on appro to try with an outfit – you can’t do that online or at an out-of-town store, Carolyn said.

Moana and Carolyn accept they may not always have the style or size a customer is after but say if they haven’t got a shoe in stock they’ll do their best to source it.

“It’s not being given the opportunity that’s the annoying thing,” Moana said.

Over their 13 years in business, like most other local retailers they do their best to support their own community – the Longbeach Coastal Challenge, Relay for Life, ANZ Cancer quiz and endof-line shoes to the Ashburton Hospice shop – and they spend their money in local businesses.

The male driver was shot in the shoulder while he was in his taxi on Stone Street in Miramar about 9.10pm, police said.

The taxi driver had taken a man and a woman from Courtenay Place to Stone Street where the dispute happened.

Alyce sets her sights on engineering

Alyce Lysaght is interested in both politics and climate change. Combined, they could take her places.

Alyce, 18, leaves Ashburton College this year with the NBS Ashburton College Alumni scholarship and a host of other awards that reflect her hard work, great attitude and natural leadership.

She is concentrating on exams right now and heads to the University of Canterbury next year to study towards a degree in engineering.

She is focused on climate change and environmental engineering.

In her final year at college she has studied calculus, physics, chemistry, accounting and English, while being a co-leader of Green House and outside school heading the Ashburton Youth Council, which is an arm of the Ashburton District Council. She’s also held down parttime jobs at Kelly’s and the Regent Theatre.

As well as leaving the Year 13 awards ceremony with the alumni scholarship, she was also awarded the Zonta Club’s community services award, the Masonic Lodge scholarship and the EA Networks scholarship for a student entering the electrical industry.

The school says she is a natural leader whose behaviour is always mature and exemplary. Alumni board chairman Alister Argyle

agreed, saying Alyce had made a positive impression on all those she had met, balancing her studies and leadership roles.

The scholarship will help pay for the many textbooks she would need in her engineering studies.

“I really love calculus and physics. I have a methodical brain and I love processes and formulas and knowing how things work. Maybe I’ll do something to do with renewable energy, that goes hand in hand with climate change.”

Alyce said her busy life had been helped by supportive family, friends and teachers, in particular Claire Bedward and Stacey Monk who had helped her during the five years at college.

“I feel I have grown as a person with a lot more confidence, building friendships and connections.”

She and mum Kerri were quickly on Facebook after the prizegiving to share the good news with dad Jim, who is in Vietnam. Alyce will be joining him in December for a couple of weeks before returning for university.

She said her youth council role had sparked an interest in local body politics and the experience had been valuable.

The $1000 Ashburton College Alumni scholarship was made possible with the support of NBS Ashburton and its branch manager Rod Fox.

In brief Arrest over fake gun A man has been arrested for carrying a fake gun in a central Auckland suburb yesterday. Police were called to Mountain View Road in Western Springs at 11.25am after reports someone was seen carrying something suspicious, a spokeswoman said. When police arrived at a block of flats nearby, on the corner of Tuarangi Road and Great North Road, they found a man carrying a fake gun. He has been arrested.

Knocked unconscious A female police officer was knocked unconscious in south Auckland on Saturday night, while police were trying to contain disorder following the Tonga v Lebanon Rugby League World Cup semifinal game, played in Christchurch on Saturday. The female officer was taken to hospital with a head and arm injury after the serious assault by an unknown man from behind.

Inspector Rod Honan said police are investigating the incident and wish to speak to anyone who has information which may help with inquiries.

Yachtie rescued An injured yachtie has been rescued by a container ship northeast of Cape Brett in Northland. The ship, Southern Lily, managed to secure a line to stricken yacht Ilanga to winch the solo Norwegian sailor to safety in high seas. On Saturday afternoon, heavy winds and rough seas severely damaged the yacht, which was sailing from Tonga to Opua.

The relatives of family members who are unable to move or talk after eating wild boar will land in New Zealand from southern India late tonight. A Waikato DHB spokeswoman confirmed husband and wife Shibu Kochummen, 35, and Subi Babu, 32, and Kochummen’s 62-year-old mother, Alekutty Daniel are still in a serious but stable condition in a ward at Waikato Hospital. The trio fell ill nine days ago from what is thought to be caused from eating contaminated wild boar.

Twyfords want to double number of homes built

Housing Minister Phil Twyford says he wants to double the number of state homes Labour promised to build on the campaign trail to 2000.

He also reiterated that the Government was committed to halting the mass sell-off of state houses, but conceded “the odd [house] here and there” would be sold to strengthen the Government’s housing portfolio.

“It’s never been a blanket ban,” Twyford told TVNZ political reporter Jessica Mutch on Q&A yesterday. ”[But] we won’t be selling them off in batches of hundreds and thousands.”

He blamed the previous Government’s mass state stock sell-off for the country’s current levels of homelessness.

“There’s more and more demand [for state housing] coming out of the woodwork and that’s concerning.”

Twyford was also optimistic the Government could build more than 27 houses on average a day to meet their 100,000 KiwiBuild target over the next three years.

He said he would not make any apologies for being ambitious.

“We’re going to put the Government in the market and choose to build affordable homes – large volumes of them, and sell them to first

home buyers.” When pressed on what he made of doubts expressed by the Reserve Bank about how feasible Labour’s plan was, Twyford said the doubts were based on incorrect Treasury advice.

Treasury had made “assumptions” about Labour’s plans without seeing their full policy, he said.

Once the houses were built, a ballot would be drawn to see who would be allowed to buy the first round of homes.

This would not be means-tested as the Government did not want to set up a “heavy bureaucratic system” around housing, Twyford said.

He denied developers would be

put off working with the Government because their profit margins would be slimmer if they had to sell affordable homes, which Labour will not be subsidising.

“The Government takes some of the risk out and speeds up the process” – which was appealing to developers, Twyford said.

As to where the houses would be built, especially in Auckland, Twyford said he shared agricultural growers’ concerns about housing developments being built on fertile growing soil.

He was open to meeting with growers in the next few weeks to discuss these concerns, he said.

Celebrating summer in high country

Methven will open its door to the rest of the country on Wednesday when the area’s second high country fete opens its gates for business.

The event has this year attracted 120 stallholders from around the South Island.

These will include a huge range of arts and crafts, jewellery, clothing pet accessories and a number of food stalls.

There will be three wineries setting up business for the day.

Julie Sergeant and Denise Dixey are the driving force behind the event and say they’ve built on last year’s experience. The return rate of stallholders was almost 90 per cent, Sergeant said, and that was the best indication of the inaugural event’s success.

“We had so much good feedback last year, the stall holders said it was fantastic and that’s what is really important, keep-

ing stallholders happy,” she said.

The event is held in the Methven Racecourse and that unique environment with its spectacular mountain views adds a special element to the fete, she said.

Ticket sales have been strong with quite a few large group bookings, but the big sales always come on the day, at the gate, Sergeant said.

While the fete is a fundraiser for local charities – Methven Care Trust this year, local charity and non-profit organisations are not charged for their stall sites.

The event might be large scale but the organising team is just two, but they are both experienced event organisers.

“We’re totally committed to this event and we work very well together,” Sergeant said.

Methven’s High Country fete will be held in the Methven Showgrounds from 10am until 4pm on Wednesday.

Woman walks through airport security An elderly woman has walked through an unmanned security lane at Auckland Airport and got on a domestic flight, causing a security shutdown that disrupted hundreds of travellers.

Police said they spoke to the woman when she arrived at Wellington Airport yesterday.

“It appears that the woman mistakenly went through an unmanned screening point at Auckland Airport. At this stage, no charges have been laid,” po-

lice said. Earlier the Civil Aviation Authority said seven flights were disrupted and about 500 people were re-screened at Auckland Airport’s domestic terminal.

Security screening of passengers was suspended while the woman’s movements were tracked via CCTV. The estimated 500 passengers on the domestic terminal pier had to be re-screened, which was completed by 2.30pm.

Jetstar flights were delayed. Passengers had to disembark from one Jetstar flight, which was held.

Police were called to meet the woman upon her arrival at Wellington Airport. People posted pictures on social media of big queues at the Auckland terminal.

“In any event like this, where there is doubt, the priority is safety and the decision was made to re-screen passengers as quickly as possible,” a spokesman said.

When US President Donald Trump first met Jacinda Ardern at Apec in Vietnam last week, he thought she was the wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, according to comedian Tom Sainsbury.

But Ardern says Sainsbury is mistaken, and it was clear to her that Trump had remembered her from the phone call they had when she first became Prime Minister.

Sainsbury, who is well known for his impersonation of National MPs on Snapchat, made the claim on Radio Live yesterday.

He said he was chatting with Ardern while they were backstage at the Vodafone NZ Music Awards on Thursday night.

“I don’t know if I should be saying this, but she said that Donald Trump was confused for a good amount of time thinking that she was Justin Trudeau’s wife.”

Sainsbury said Trump eventually realised who Ardern was, and that Ardern had also said that Trump was “not as orange in real life”.

In a statement, Ardern said: “Someone thought the President had confused us, but in all of the conversations we had it was clear to me he hadn’t, and recalled the conversation we had late last month.”

Trudeau introduced Ardern to Trump in Vietnam while the three of them were standing in a small circle of leaders, all wearing their Apec silk shirts.

Ardern said she exchanged pleasantries with the US president and shook his hand, but did not have a substantive conversation.

Ardern and Trudeau were

among the youngest and most liberal leaders at Apec.

A few days later in Manila, in the Philippines, they had a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit, in which she invited him to visit New Zealand.

Trudeau was one of the first world leaders to call Ardern after she became Prime Ministerdesignate, with Trudeau’s office releasing a photo of him videocalling Ardern with an enthusiastic wave.

Ardern’s office also released a photo of the Skype call.

After Apec, Ardern exchanged some light-hearted comments with Trump while waiting for a gala dinner at the East Asia Summit.

She said that Trump had “patted the person next to him on the shoulder, pointed at me and said, ‘This lady caused a lot of upset in her country’, talking about the election”.

“I said, ‘Well, you know, only maybe 40 per cent’, then he said it again.

“I said, ‘You know’, laughing, ‘no-one marched when I was elected’. It was only afterwards that I reflect that it could have been taken in a very particular way – he did not seem offended.”

Ardern took part in a women’s rights march in Auckland that coincided with the millions-strong march across the US and around the world the day after Trump’s inauguration in January.

The march took place six weeks before Ardern was elected the party’s deputy leader and six months before she took over the Labour leadership.

Arts graduates team up

Five recent Masters of Fine Arts graduates have teamed up to project a fresh visual approaches to Kiwi landscapes onto the walls of the Ashburton Art Gallery.

Fiona Van Oyen, Sue Pearce, Robyn Bardas, Miranda Joseph, and Hannah Joynt have all recently graduated from the Dunedin School of Art, and are now exhibiting together for the first time.

Their New Perspectives on Landscapes exhibition ranges from the upscale to the intricate, the familiar to the disconcerting, sharing “pictorial to environmental concerns”.

Dunedin School of Art principal lecturer Clive Humphries curated the exhibition and took

time to speak at the opening last week. Humphries described the challenge for artists to “re-connect” with natural landscapes in an era of accelerated urbanisation, population growth and environmental threats.

Evident in the exhibition, he said “the urge to reconnect with the particularities of place is common ground… each artist looking through their own unique lens of experience and material sensibility”.

Bardas’ six and nine metre wide prints occupy two walls in the exhibition, and offer a glimpse into central Otago.

Ashburton Art Gallery exhibitions assistant Nicole Bourke said Bardas’ works explore lines and movement, and have a unique story behind them.

She said Bardas commuted from her home in Wanaka to the School of Art in Dunedin thriceweekly, and captured film of her journey from the window.

Bardas then combined still images and over-painted areas with gouache to create the uniquely “fluid and disjunctive” effect.

Another Christchurch-based contributing artist, Van Oyen, drew on her experience of the February 2011 earthquake to create her pieces – a more “psychological and perceptual” reading of landscape.

And delving into the relationship between physical landscape and experience is Hannah Joynt, whose works in the exhibition range from plein-air drawings to large-scale laser cuts.

Joynt, who now lectures in Creative Studies said as a subject, “landscape” was very loaded.

“It comes with huge art historical baggage and inextricably links to environmental, political and social concerns related to Land and Place,” she said.

“We are all very aware of the implications that come with landscape work so by coming together in this group exhibition we are setting the stage for discussions about what these things that come with making art work about the landscape.”

She said she hopes viewers will find pleasure in the art.

“There is such variety in all of our work and bring it together in this way has been really important for us.”

“We hope that the viewers will get that sense of multiple perspectives,” she said.

A drop-in session at the gallery last Wednesday offered young artists the opportunity to draw from the techniques and concepts presented in the exhibition to create their own, upscale panoramic view of the Ashburton Domain.

In brief Death toll rises to 19 Three more people have been found dead from a flash flood that hit a district west of Athens, raising the total death toll to 19. The fire department says the body of a man was found yesterday on a factory grounds near the suburb of Mandra, 25 kilometres northwest of the Greek capital. The body has still not been retrieved because of debris and a nearby leaking propane tank. The coast guard also announced that a patrol ship had found two bodies, both men, in the sea south of Mandra.

Gerry Adams retiring Ireland’s Gerry Adams has announced he will stand down as Sinn Fein president next year after 34 years, in a move that will complete a generational shift in the former political wing of the Irish Republican Army. “I will not be standing for the Dail (Irish parliament) in the next election,” Adams said yesterday. “This is also my last Ard Fheis (party conference) as president of Sinn Fein,” he said.

In character, they are markedly different, but the 70-year relationship between the Queen and Prince Philip has stood the test of time.

Their marriage, which has stretched from the 1940s well into the 21st century, has provided the monarchy with stability and steadfastness through the decades.

While Elizabeth is seen as passive, cautious and conventional, the prince is more adventurous, tempestuous and active.

The success of their long-lasting union has been put down to their compatibility. They have shared interests and the same dutiful royal training.

Both love horses and outdoor life.

Both regard displays of emotion as something to be kept private.

Prince William once summed up their bond.

“He makes her laugh because some of the things he says and does and the way he looks at life is obviously slightly different than her, so together they’re a

great couple,” William said.

The unwavering partnership between the monarch and her consort has remained intact, even when the younger generation’s marriages have fallen by the wayside.

Philip was at the Queen’s side when she acceded to the throne in 1952, and for more than 65 years has been with her as she carries out her role as sovereign, becoming the nation’s longest reigning monarch along the way.

Now in their nineties, the couple have entered a new phase in their marriage.

While she continues her duties as head of state at Buckingham Palace, Philip, 96, is enjoying his retirement, spending plenty of time at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate, reading and painting, away from the pressures of royal engagements.

Their partnership was a traditional one and the Queen grew up in a world where it was the man who was in charge at home.

Malcolm Young dies Malcolm Young, the rhythm guitarist and guiding force behind the bawdy Australian hard rock band AC/DC, who helped create such head-banging anthems as Highway to Hell, Hells Bells and Back in Black, has died. He was 64. AC/DC announced the death on Saturday on their official Facebook page and website. The posts did not say when or where Young died, but said the performer had been suffering from dementia. He was diagnosed in 2014.

World’s largest aircraft breaks free The Airlander 10, said to be the world’s largest aircraft, has broken free from its moorings at an airfield north of London, injuring one person.

A member of staff at Hybrid Air Vehicles, the manufacturer of the craft, sustained minor injuries during the incident at the Cadington airfield near the town of Bedford, the firm said. Bedford police closed nearby roads as a precaution.

Part-airship, part-plane, the 92-metre Airlander 10 can stay airborne for up to five days at a time, and is intended for use as a research or surveillance craft or to carry passengers or cargo.

The company said they were investigating why the craft broke away from its moorings.

Search for submarine

Doctors remove worms from North Korea soldier

Argentina’s Navy is ramping up the search for a submarine that hasn’t been heard from in four days, and at least six other nations are joining the effort. Navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said that the area being searched off the country’s southern Atlantic coast has been doubled as concerns about the 44 crew members grew. “We are not discounting any hypothesis,” Balbi said. Possibilities could include “a problem with communications” or with its power system, he said.

Authorities last had contact with the German-built diesel-electric sub, the ARA San Juan, on Wednesday as it was on a voyage from the extreme southern port of Ushuaia to Mar del Plata. President Mauricio Macri said the country will use “all resources national and international that are necessary to find the submarine”.

Surgeons treating a North Korean soldier who was severely wounded by gunfire while escaping to South Korea this past week have removed dozens of parasites from his body, including presumed roundworms that were as long as 27 centimetres.

The unarmed soldier, whose name and rank have not been disclosed, defected to the South last week by driving a military jeep near a line that divides the Koreas at the Joint Security Area and then rushing across it under a barrage of bullets.

Hospital officials said yesterday it was too early to tell whether he will make a recovery.

While treating the wounds, surgeons found the large parasites, which may be reflective of poor nutrition and health in North Korea’s military.

Doctors say the soldier is 1.7 metres tall but weighs just 60kg.

“I spent more than 20 years of experience as a surgeon, but I have not found parasites this big in the intestines of South Koreans,” said Lee Cook-jong, who leads the soldier’s

medical team. While the North Korean soldier’s vital signs were stabilising yesterday, he continued to remain unconscious and relying on a breathing machine.

After consecutive surgeries to repair internal organ damage and other injuries, no further surgeries are planned as of yet, said Shin Mi-jeong, an official at the Ajou University Medical Centre near Seoul.

South Korea’s military said four North Korean soldiers used handguns and AK rifles to fire about 40 rounds at their former comrade, who was hit at least five times. He was found beneath a pile of leaves on the southern side of the Joint Security Area, and South Korean troops crawled there to recover him. A United Nations Command helicopter later transported him to the Ajou hospital.

It remains unclear whether the North Koreans chasing the soldier fired at him even after he crossed into the southern side of the border, which would be a violation of an armistice agreement that ended the 1950-53 Korean War. - AP

Actor and singer David Cassidy is “conscious and surrounded by family”, his spokeswoman says after being admitted to hospital for organ failure.

The Partridge Family star, 67, was rushed to a Florida hospital three days ago and requires a liver transplant following a tumultuous few years for the former teenage heartthrob. He is also said to be suffering from kidney failure, a source confirmed, following reports he had been put into an induced coma. Cassidy, who starred as Keith Partridge in the 1970s TV series The Partridge Family, revealed he was battling dementia earlier this year.

Road toll a reflection of driver behaviour Colin Williscroft SENIOR REPORTER

W

ell, despite it being a long weekend in Canterbury over the past few days, it looks like the region got through without adding to the national road toll.

It’s been a terrible year on the nation’s roads in terms of deaths, with this year’s tally already matching last year’s total of 328.

Given there’s still six weeks of the year remaining, who knows what the final number will be.

We’re currently about 50 more than at the same time last year.

As well as the fatalities, we should remember it’s generally accepted that for every death there’s another 10 people who are seriously injured, so this year we can expect more than 3500 other road users to be badly hurt, possibly permanently disabled.

I’ve heard plenty of theories about why this year has been so bad, including the number of vehicles on the road, people driving greater distances and cars being capable of greater speeds than in the past.

But surely we have to look at something much closer to home – driver behaviour.

Like many in this part of the country I spend a bit of time driving on State Highway 1 between Mid Canterbury and Christchurch.

Pretty much every time I make the trip I will see a piece of driving that will make me shake my head and mutter “what are you doing?”

I’m surprised that there’s not more accidents if what I see regularly is anything to go by.

But it’s not just here, it’s a problem nationwide, according to a survey released lats month by the Automobile Association.

It found that more than a third of us feel unsafe when on the road, and most people don’t have that much confidence in the ability of other drivers.

And let’s be clear, we’re talking about New Zealand drivers, not tourists.

Unfortunately, changing the behaviour of those behind the wheel, especially those of us who’ve been driving for a while, won’t happen overnight. We all think the problem is with someone else.

While that remains the attitude of the majority of drivers, there’s only one way our road toll is going to go.

And it’s not down.

arlier this year I was speaking to a senior executive from a large New Zealand airport. He noted that the number of direct flights from China into New Zealand has almost tripled over the past three years, and that we’re likely to see similar growth over the next few years.

It’s not just China. In recent years we’ve seen more airlines arrive or return to the New Zealand market. More and more routes are opening up.

The benefits aren’t just to New Zealanders wanting to discover a new part of the world. Every flight brings with it new foreign tourists, eager to explore New Zealand and see some of what makes us so special.

It’s no surprise, then, that last year tourism surpassed agriculture as New Zealand’s biggest export earner.

The key thing for us is to not squander this growth, to ensure we turn this new wave of travellers into a sustainable stream for many years. Making sure that tourists have a good experience while they’re here.

dustry themselves.

It’s a long way to travel here.

For many tourists, coming to New Zealand is a once-in-alifetime trip.

Accommodation providers, activity and tour operators, even bars and restaurants, all play an important part in ensuring a high quality visitor experience.

The critical role for government – both central government and local government – is ensuring we have the infrastructure to cater for the huge growth in tourist numbers.

It’s ensuring our roads are safe and durable enough to cater for the many thousands more cars on the road every year.

It’s working with the industry to ensure there’s sufficient information available to travellers, and they know how and where to make bookings for accommo-

dation and other services.

And often it’s as simple as enough toilets and carparks at tourist hotspots to cater for freedom campers and other travellers.

To cater for the recent boom in tourist numbers, the previous National Government established a Tourism Infrastructure Fund worth more than $100 million a year, to partner with local Councils to help deliver some of that core infrastructure.

I hope the newly-elected Coalition Government retain the fund, and continue to grow it as we had pledged to do.

I’m pleased that the Ashburton District Council were able to access some of that funding, and I’d like to work with them to access more if the fund is retained.

Mid Canterbury has much to offer foreign travellers.

Many come to New Zealand to see exactly what we have – lush and open spaces, clean air and spectacular views.

With assets like Mt Hutt, Lake Hood, and great rivers for fishing, we’re in a good position to take advantage of the recent growth in tourist numbers.

We’re also well placed to compete for the growing number of domestic tourists who travel each year.

More and more Kiwis are getting out to see their own country, whether it be a weekend away or a longer trip.

A recent Experience Mid Canterbury report noted that in the last year tourism was worth $171 million to the district, up by more than $40 million on the previous year. That’s hugely positive, not just for the tourist industry, but everyone in the district.

But as the report also noted, we’re competing with other districts in the Canterbury region and the South Island.

That means we need to be doing everything we can to ensure travellers stay, play, and pay here.

Play at your own risk in London

I

n a junkyard in London’s East End, two kids climb behind the wheel of an empty, rusty, wheel-less hulk that was once a black cab. They’re planning a road trip.

Before them is a wasteland of bricks, tyres, wheelbarrows and shopping trolleys. Rubbish to most, but to kids, they’re tools for adventure.

Welcome to Hackney’s adventure playgrounds. Places where kids can climb, hide, build, create, imagine and destroy. Nothing here is static or expensive. There are no rules.

Close to the rusty cab, a girl is filling a tarp with water from a hose. Soon there will be kids flinging themselves down a half pipe into the sludge.

Others sit precariously high, legs dangling from a wooden platform protruding from a treehouse. A teenage boy is ripping up wallpaper to build a fire while the kids on the hill are whizzing down zip wires. All the while a boy is denting the back of the cab with a brick.

In this green pocket of freedom bordered by tower blocks, social housing estates and an old, grey stone church, kids are creating their own world, and it’s more magical than anything Disney could dream up.

There are adult supervisors on site of course, to ensure everyone is playing kindly and to offer help if a child wants to do some gardening, build a fire or use power tools – all which are encouraged.

The philosophy is kids are best left to their own imagination and are more than able to assess their own risk.

You could argue that Hackney residents are accustomed to risk. Before gentrification swept through the area on the back of the 2012 Olympics, Hackney was for decades one of England’s poorest districts. Cheap rents lured a hotchpotch of immigrants, artists and those on the breadline following World War Two. The place was sometimes tolerant, sometimes petrifying.

Today, the borough remains a hotchpotch – welfare dependents and wealthy young professionals mingle in galleries and cocktail bars carved from the shells of old factories and warehouses.

In a funny way, it seems to work; at the borough’s core is a value system that ensures everyone is included. Particularly children.

The borough’s adventure playgrounds are part of that, although Hackney can’t claim their origins.

Junk play spaces were the

Twilight play at Homerton Grove Adventure Playground. brainchild of Danish architect Carl Theodor Sorensen, who wondered at children’s glee as they roamed through bombsites during World War Two. The first junk playground opened in Copenhagen in 1943.

Others made similar observations in war-torn London. German bombers targeted the East End, which was densely populated and, with its docks and storage facilities, was crucial to England’s supply chain.

Thousands of homes were destroyed, but among the destruction was joy. Children used battered beams to make swings, shattered doors and frames to make dens – assessing their own risk as they went.

It’s as much a testament to the human spirit as London’s unwavering ability to adapt and change in the face of hardship. Now there are around 90 junk or adventure playgrounds across the capital.

comes the lava,” he explains. Arlo loves it here. “We can move everything around and there are more dangerous things to climb.”

He runs off to join his friends in their secret hideout – whatever it is.

His mum Clare is also a big fan.

“We’re so lucky to have these adventure playgrounds here, where there’s so much high density housing with little outside space.”

“They tend to go a bit more wild here, but it’s good for kids to have that outlet.”

Better a broken ankle than a broken spirit, after all – but Clare says she has seen less accidents here than in traditional playgrounds.

“I think it’s because children have to be more cautious and think through their climbing and manoeuvres more actively,” she says.

It’s not just the playgrounds here that encourage active play.

Without large gardens, children in London have traditionally played in the streets. Today, the government funds a consortium called London Play, which encourages streets to be closed to traffic on a regular basis. It’s not only an inclusive way to build communities but also a cost-effective way to tackle childhood obesity.

The concept is booming across the capital, including in Hackney.

I find a poster outside the adventure playground advertising a Play Street. “Glyn Road closed for Play and Chat 1pm to 4pm this Sunday,” it reads. The road will be closed to traffic, it adds, but residents will have stewarded access at 5mph.

They say kids in East London grow up fast, with a view of life under a magnifying glass. But the adventure playgrounds and play streets show residents here understand that poverty breeds opportunity and creativity. As does risk.

ABs pushed to the limit

By GreGor pauL Clinical when it mattered and resilient enough to weather long periods of Scottish dominance, the All Blacks found a way to keep their perfect record against Scotland, eventually walking off with a 22-17 victory.

It was never once easy for the visitors.

They haven’t faced a Scottish performance like it in an age.

This was for real.

A genuine, thumping, thrilling encounter that demanded the All Blacks fight to the death.

Scotland were a pass away from winning and had all the momentum and all the good ideas in the last quarter.

Such was the pressure the All Blacks were under, they had to play the last 20 minutes with 14 men – Sam Cane being binned for cynically killing the ball on his own line and then Wyatt Crockett making a needlessly dumb decision to come round the side of a ruck early.

But while the All Blacks weren’t able to play on the front foot the way they wanted, or control the game or the ball as they hoped, they did show an incredible depth of character to hold together in that final quarter.

The Scots spent a fair bit of time inside the All Blacks’ 22 and

yet they only managed two try tries in the time they had a man advantage.

They needed three – and so nearly got the last one – but some big defending and some big scrummaging enabled the All Blacks to hang in there – to turn the ball over when they really needed something to go their way.

But what mattered more was that they made three lightning strikes to score tries that were, in all honesty, against the run of play.

That’s the All Blacks, though, good enough to make their passes stick and nail their opportunities when they come up.

The killer came from Beauden Barrett after Sonny Bill Williams made the break and offloaded to Damian McKenzie.

It was maybe one of the more important tries of the year because Scotland, albeit one of world rugby’s big improvers in the last few years, were a level, maybe two, above where they have been at any time since they last played the All Blacks in 2014.

They owned the first half.

They had, after half an hour, almost 70 per cent of the possession and about the same again in territory.

And they were fearless and inventive in the way they attacked.

They had no qualms about opening the game up from deep – seeing if they could find some space on the flanks to exploit.

More often than not they did too and when the ball got into the hands of fullback Stuart Hogg, he embarrassed more than a few All Blacks’ tacklers who didn’t have the pace or agility to get a hand on him.

The only thing missing for the Scots was that killer last pass or the necessary composure when they had the line at their mercy.

They needed points.

They needed all that pressure to be sitting on the scoreboard and worming its way into potentially panicky All Blacks’ heads.

It’s the concession of tries, even regularly penalties, that truly matters against the All Blacks who do the rope-a-dope better than any other team in the game.

They can look a little punch drunk, as if they are swaying on their feet, almost about to topple and then five minutes later have 14 points in the can and suddenly give the impression they are virtually unstoppable.

That’s exactly what did happen after the break when boomboom – first Codie Taylor was worked over in the corner and then a Sonny Bill Williams grubber saw Damian McKenzie touch

down under the posts and turn the game on its head.

Or at least the All Blacks had some leeway, a little breathing space to ride out a Scottish tide that just kept coming.

Meanwhile, the theory that a sizeable gulf exists between the All Blacks and the world’s chasing group has been smashed to smithereens this year, according to coach Steve Hansen.

An inspired Scotland provided further evidence that the world champions can take little for granted any more.

Hansen said he already knew that, but believes it’s taking a while for the typical All Blacks supporter to understand the northern hemisphere is quickly closing any perceived gulf in quality.

England and Ireland have proven themselves in recent years, and now world No.6 Scotland are threatening to join them as a genuine rugby powerhouse.

“Everyone back home was telling us how they were getting bored with us being dominant – well, they’ll just have to go and have a cup of tea and have a good think about that.”

Pinpointing one moment from such a memorable test seems amiss. As with any match many instances, two yellow cards alone, had major influences on the All Blacks scrambling to victory in Edinburgh.

But, partly because it was the last act, and therefore tension at its peak, Hogg breaking through, as he did so often, and gassing towards the line only to be taken into touch tantalisingly short by Barrett firmly sticks out.

Two of the world’s best attacking players going head-to-head is but one ‘what if’ moment that will haunt Scotland. There were many others, too. It’s why they were anything but celebratory about this near thing.

Hogg against Barrett had everyone, including those in the respective coaching boxes at a feverish Murrayfield, on their feet.

Hogg, this brilliant fullback, held history in his hands. The first Scottish win over the All Blacks in 112 years seemed possible, probable, even.

Until Barrett arrived.

“On the brink of something special wasn’t I,” Hogg said.

“Credit to Beauden Barrett it was a cracking tackle. I’m pretty gutted to chuck the ball away as well but, look, on another day that comes off.

“The boys are devastated to be honest. We probably left a couple out there.”

For his part, Barrett claims he was sweating. Earlier he showcased his blistering pace to finish a classy set piece try laid on by Sonny Bill Williams and Damian McKenzie. This time, from fullback, he needed all of it to save the All Blacks’ blushes.

“We knew it was coming – we knew they weren’t going to kick the ball away. We decided to kick long and try hold them out,” Barrett explained.

“He’s a great attacking player there was one point I thought I gave him too much on the outside and I was a bit worried so I was relieved to see the outcome.

“I’m glad I got there in the end.”

With five points the difference and time up, Scotland coach Gregor Townsend’s thoughts drifted to Finn Russell knocking over the match-winning conversion from the sideline.

What that would have meant to those who formed one of the best atmospheres Townsend has experienced at Murrayfield and, indeed, those glued to screens around the country.

“It looked like Stuart was going to go whole way he was so determined. Beauden Barrett is pretty quick too and he managed to get the cover tackle.

“It’s a pity we couldn’t get the try but it was a great effort right to the end.”

Jones revels in controversy

By Ian Mccullough Australia have sunk to a fifth successive defeat to England in controversial fashion at a rainsoaked Twickenham.

Eddie Jones’ side sealed a 30-6 win but it was rookie New Zealand referee Ben O’Keeffe who was very much the centre of attention.

Australia were very much in with a shout of ending their run of outs against England but three late tries gave an unfair reflection on the game.

In addition to two Wallabies tries being disallowed, the 28-year-old O’Keeffe sin-binned Michael Hooper and Kurtley Beale with England being awarded a try that could have been overruled.

Two Owen Farrell penalties gave England a 6-0 lead at halftime in freezing cold and wet conditions which saw both sides struggle to hold on to the ball.

Hooper looked to have scored the first try of the match midway through the first half but he was adjudged to have been fractionally offside after Marika Koiroibete booted the ball down the left touchline.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika sarcastically applauded the decision from his seat in the stands and his mood did not improve when Hooper was sinbinned in the 33rd minute.

It was a record eighth yellow card for Hooper, who was sent to the sidelines for 10 minutes for persistent offside where he was joined by Beale on the stroke of halftime.

Beale was shown a yellow card for deliberate knock-on after attempting, and almost pulling off, a one-handed interception of a cut-out pass intended for Jonny May. Cheika, incensed, made his feelings known to O’Keeffe at the interval after coming down to the touchline and could find himself in hot water with World Rugby for his actions.

Reece Hodge’s kick cut the deficit to 6-3 but England extended the lead in contentious fashion after turning defence into attack.

A magnificent scything run from Wallabies centre Samu Kerevi bisected the English defence but Tevita Kuridrani spilled the offload with the line at his mercy.

England halfback Ben Youngs booted the loose ball down the field looking for touch.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika was an unhappy man after the game at Twickenham.

The decision knocked the stuffing out of Cheika’s side and England ran in three late converted tries through Jonathan Joseph, May and Danny Care to add some gloss to the final scoreline.

Revelling in a fifth successive

win over his home nation, Eddie Jones said his side thoroughly deserved their controversial win.

But unlike opposite number Michael Cheika, who was angered at two disallowed tries and the sin-binnings of Hooper and Beale, Jones was in fine form after chalking up a 21st win in 22 matches in charge.

“It was a tough old game, a great game of test rugby,” Jones said.

“Two even teams and in the end we stuck at it.

“It was an arm wrestle.

“It was going to and fro.

“You had to take your opportunities when they came about and we managed to take our opportunities better than them.”

In a match played in wet and cold weather, Jones said his side adapted to the conditions better than the Wallabies, in front of a

“In the end tactically we played smart, we read the conditions,” he said.

“The rain came down heavy.

“Even at the start of the game the pitch was slippery, the ball was wet.”

Predictably Jones disagreed with Cheika’s take on the role of the official in the outcome of the match.

“Why do we have a referee?

“Why do we have TMOs?” he said.

“How were we lucky?

“They do 10 replays of a video and make a decision.

“This was the best referee in the world for today.”

“We had the best guys in the TMO and we’re saying we’re lucky because the decisions went our way.

The All Blacks are furious after Brad Shields snubbed a call-up to the national team because he is signing for Wasps in an attempt to make England’s World Cup squad.

The world champions are understood to believe the Hurricanes skipper has been given sufficient encouragement by England to reject Steve Hansen’s request for him to play against France last week and defect to the Premiership next year. England have long been aware that the 26-year-old qualifies to play for them through his parents.

Fiery week coming up There is much more to Steve Hansen’s Welsh connection than the British and Irish Lions and the ongoing feud with Warren Gatland.

Off the field at least, expectations are this week could be a fiery affair, with Hansen and Gatland set to resume their heated Lions rivalry.

From saying he hated the tour to then suggesting he is keen to do the job again, Gatland has been all over the show since copping criticism from senior Lions players about his coaching methods and returning to Wales to promote his book. In it, he claims to have explosive information on the All Blacks and that he wouldn’t hesitate to reveal it. “I have heard of some things about the All Blacks that could be quite explosive if they were made public, and if it does get dirty, then I will raise a couple of those things. Kiwis out of order

K

iwis halfback Shaun Johnson was out of line in having a crack at doubting fans and media in the wake of their embarrassing Rugby League World Cup quarter-final loss to Fiji.

The Warriors playmaker came across as petulant and paranoid when he decided following the 4-2 loss in Wellington to tell us how sections of the public and media have had it in for them all along.

Talk about poor timing.

Johnson’s comments perhaps would have been better received if the side had played well and bounced back from last week’s shock loss to Tonga to make the final four.

But the fact is the Kiwis played poorly and no amount of spin or polish can hide the fact they underperformed with their premature exit the worst result for any Kiwis side in World Cup history.

Bizarrely, coach David Kidwell and captain Adam Blair doubled down on those remarks yesterday, wondering out loud why they had been given a tough time in the lead-up to the tournament start and questioning the lack of supporters cheering them on in their first home tests since 2014.

In the wake of their failed campaign and two historic losses to second-tier sides the Kiwis did themselves no favours pointing the finger at their already disillusioned and alienated fan base.

I can understand them being disappointed at the lack of crowd support they enjoyed compared to the likes of Tonga and Samoa, but fans had every right to be sceptical about their tournament hopes after what’s been a nightmare past 12 months for the national game.

Belief in Kidwell was already low coming off last year’s disastrous Four Nations campaign that saw them return home having lost four tests to Australia and escaping with a draw against Scotland, with a narrow win over England the only positive.

The Warriors diabolical NRL

Record book smashed A 20-year-old has walloped an astonishing 490 runs off just 151 balls in a 50-over club match in South Africa. Wicketkeeperbatsman Shane Dadswell smacked 57 sixes and 27 fours en route to amassing the mammoth total while playing for North-West University Pukke against Potch Dorp XI. The highest score in List A cricket came from Englishman Ali Brown, who managed a score of 268 runs for Surrey in a county match in 2002, while the highest ODI score of all-time was Rohit Sharma’s 264 for India against Sri Lanka three years ago.

Santner the all-rounder Mitchell Santner benefited most among the seven Black Caps who featured in Northern Districts’ eight-wicket Plunket Shield loss to Auckland this week. In the first innings the left-hander gritted out 55 runs from 138 balls in 184 minutes, including nine boundaries as part of ND’s 148. He came to the wicket at 15 for two in the seventh over with the ball moving on and off a well-thatched pitch. In the second innings he contributed 53 from 122 balls. As a player who averages 26 from 15 tests and 29.89 from 39 first-class matches, Santner’s ninth and 10th half-centuries should instil more confidence as he looks to complement his leftarm orthodox spin by maturing as an all-rounder.

Stokes not an issue

Kiwis kingpin Shaun Johnson hasn’t got a lot of room to move in criticising the fans.

Hurt Kiwis fans feel further insulted when Kidwell and Blair try to focus on the supposed good work that has been done in improving the team’s culture off the field – when all evidence

shows they are going backwards on it.

The barbs thrown at the media are also cringeworthy and highlight the fact that players and staff seem consumed with what’s been said about them rather than being focused on getting their jobs done.

Kiwis’ ignominious loss

By Cathy Walshe New Zealand coach David Kidwell says there’s plenty of potential for the future despite their early exit from the Rugby League World Cup. In a rare tryless match in which all the points came from penalties, Fiji held out the highly favoured Kiwis and will now face defending champion Australia in next weekend’s semi-finals.

Australia thrashed Samoa 46-0 on Friday.

Earlier, Tonga – who had upset New Zealand in the pool phase – edged Lebanon 24-22 to remain undefeated and earn a semi-final against the winner of Sunday’s last quarterfinal between England and Papua New Guinea.

Tonga’s win over New Zealand in Pool B was the first-ever by a tier two nation over one of the sport’s tier-one powerhouses at a World Cup but Fiji’s shock win was perhaps even more surprising because of the higher stakes.

Apisai Koroisau put Fiji ahead with a penalty in the 14th minute, the only points of the first half.

New Zealand levelled the scores with a penalty to Shaun Johnson four minutes into the second half but Taane Milne put the Pacific Islanders back in front for good with his 61st minute goal.

“It’s indescribable,” Fiji captain Kevin Naiqama said.

“I’m so proud of these boys.

“I’ve had so much belief in them from the moment we went into camp.

“I’ve never stopped believing.

“I always said that we can win this game and it’s just a dream came true to get it done.”

New Zealand captain Adam Blair congratulated Fiji for winning, saying his team knew they would be in for a tough match.

“This is what you expect in these quarter-final games,” Blair said.

“It’s do or die.

Kiwis’ skipper Adam Blair congratulated the Fijians.

“We put it out there on the line but you’ve got to give it to Fiji, they played hard, they played tough.”

Kidwell’s own future is up in the air after the Kiwis’ campaign finished early in Wellington.

An independent panel review of all the management roles will begin next week, with the aim of delivering a final report in January.

Despite the disappointment of New Zealand’s early World Cup

exit, Kidwell says there are still positives to take from the campaign.

He pointed to the development of young players such as Canberra second-rower Joe Tapine, 21-year-old hooker Danny Levi and Melbourne Storm forward Nelson Asofa- Solomona.

“We’ve unearthed some young talent there,” Kidwell said.

“I’ve seen Joe Tapine, how much he’s grown; he’s a future leader.

“Young Danny Levi, there were question marks over him or Issac Luke, and I thought he was exceptional throughout the whole campaign.

“You’ve got young Nelson, he still learning, he’s only 21 and he’ll learn from this experience.”

After opening their World Cup campaign with comfortable wins over Scotland and Samoa, the Kiwis were beaten 28-22 by Tonga last week before falling to Fiji.

Still struggling to come to terms with the losses, Kidwell says he will take time out to think about whether he wants to continue as coach.

“I didn’t get any sleep last night, and really thought about what I want to do, what I want to achieve as a coach,” he said yesterday.

“I have to really sit down and think.

“I know I’ve created something here at the start – it’s whether I want to continue, or people will let me continue.

“At the end of the day, I’ll do what’s best for the jersey.”

New Zealand Rugby League chief Alex Hayton says the losses were disappointing, and admits they would damage the Kiwis’ brand.

“It’s not what anyone wanted but we’ll go through the process and understand where we can do better,” he said.

“It will have an impact on the game.

“If you’re trying to get people to play rugby league and aspire to be in the Kiwis, then having a successful international team is an important part of that,” he said.

“You could say the brand has been damaged, but if they come back and they’re winning next year, then it re-establishes.

“We’re all passionate about our sports, and we all want our national teams to do well, and sometimes you’ve got to take the hits with the successes.” - AAP

Tonga ‘lacked energy’ in RLWC QF By angelo Risso Tonga coach Kristian Woolf admits his side struggled to mentally prepare for their Rugby League World Cup quarter-final win over Lebanon.

Mate Ma’a shocked the rugby league world by tipping over tier-one New Zealand 28-22 last weekend to secure top spot in Pool B. They’ve since gone on to qualify for a maiden World Cup semifinal but only after suffering a serious scare against the adventurous Cedars.

With five-eighth Mitchell Moses playing the game of his life, Lebanon kept themselves within touching distance of Tonga but just fell short of victory.

A second-half in which both sides were out on their feet was ultimately decided by an Ata Hingano penalty goal – rendering a try-of-the-tournament contender from Cedars winger Abbas Miski in vain.

Woolf admitted his side were a little lucky to come out on top.

They’d channelled so much energy into their pool wins over Samoa and the Kiwis that a slight comedown against Lebanon was inevitable.

“Not for any other reason than we were so up for a game against Samoa, it was such a big occasion for us, and then we got so up for a game against New Zealand (and) that was obviously a massive occasion,” Woolf said.

“It just drains you.

Woolf said his troops had immediately acknowledged their shortcomings against Lebanon, and admitted they weren’t up to scratch.

at their destructive best up front, with Jason Taumalolo making 217 running metres and Andrew Fifita 198 metres.

With the match against Lebanon out of their system, they could now refresh and focus on a big performance in next week’s semi-final in Auckland.

They will take on the winner of the clash between England and Papua New Guinea.

In further positive news, prop and chief goalkicker Sio Siua Taukeiaho is likely to return for the match after missing Saturday’s game with a knee niggle.

“Sometimes, not playing your best and just being able to scrape through a win certainly makes you refocus for the next week,” Woolf said.

Paddon grabs third Thierry Neuville has survived a dramatic final day to win Rally Australia, securing second place overall in the World Rally Championship in the process. The Belgian held a comfortable 14.7 second lead heading into the final stage in Coffs Harbour, on the NSW north coast.

But the Hyundai driver was forced into action when his door swung open mid-stage, Neuville able to slam it shut as he approached a corner. The moment of madness capped another eventful day in the WRC season finale, with JariMatti Latvala crashing out seconds before completing the rally. Macau GP rider dies The wife of British superbike rider Daniel Hegarty has said she is heartbroken after her husband died on the sixth lap of the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix. Lucy Draycott posted the message on Facebook announcing she had lost the love of her life following the crash. Her husband, 31, lost control of his bike on a tight corner on the street circuit. Earlier this year, Hegarty’s Topgun Racing Honda team mate Gavin Lupton died following a tragic crash at the Ulster Grand Prix in August. - PA

Biting accusation Australian centre Isabelle Kelly has been accused of biting during the Jillaroos’ women’s Rugby League World Cup clash yesterday.

England prop Chantelle Crowl reeled out of a tackle on Kelly late in the first half during their sides’ round two clash at Southern Cross Group Stadium. She immediately remonstrated with referee Todd Smith and asked to make a formal complaint. Goffin stuns Federer Giantkilling Belgian David Goffin is savouring the sweetest success of his career after stunning Roger Federer and the tennis world to surge into the final of the seasonending championships in London.

Backing up his shock group win over world No.1 Rafael Nadal, Goffin ended Federer’s year with an improbable 2-6 6-3 6-4 comeback win over the 19-time grand slam champion yesterday.

Venus out of ATP Finals Kiwi tennis player Michael Venus and doubles partner Ryan Harrison have fallen out of the ATP Tour Finals at the semi-final stage, defeated in straight sets by top seeds Marcelo Melo and Lukasz Kubot. Venus and Harrison lost 6-1 6-4 to the Brazilian and Polish pair yesterday in London, outplayed from pillar to post. The pair had won all three of their Finals pool matches and appeared set to repeat their French Open heroics, winning that grand slam earlier this year. But they couldn’t get their game going in the English capital, broken twice in the first set to give themselves an uphill battle.

Melo and Kubot then broke at 4-4 in the second set to serve for the match, which they successfully completed to reach the final. - PA

They triumphed in the Gr.3 Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup (3200m) to hand Spratt a coveted double having earlier won the Gr.1 gavelhouse. com New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m), while Campbell was saddling his first runner from new quarters.

He recently relocated from his long-time base at Opaki to a property in Cambridge.

“This is my first starter so it’s pretty special,” Campbell said.

“We decided to target this race right from the time he came back in.

“He’s a lightly-framed horse so he doesn’t need much racing.

“He’s only going to get better with time like his brother Werther.”

Campbell trained Werther before he transferred to Hong Kong where he has been a Group One winner and on Sunday will step out in the Gr.2 Jockey Club Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin. His younger sibling is a renowned front-runner and in Spratt he had the ideal partner with the Pukekohe-based jockey giving Gobstopper free rein to bowl along at the head of the field.

Breakers dodge Bullets

BY NIALL ANDERSON The New Zealand Breakers have overcome another test, dodging a barrage of Bullets to tally their ninth successive Australia National Basketball League victory with a 9082 scoreline.

In a week where the club revealed an impending ownership change, they showed they still owned their home court, making it 42 straight days without defeat – a stretch which will extend due to the upcoming international break.

They will go into that break with a significant lead atop the ANBL ladder, sitting with a 9-1 record, and their ninth win presented another obstacle which was duly dealt with.

A 90-82 victory required their biggest comeback of the season, coming from nine points down in the third quarter to eventually find their offensive groove and pull away.

The Breakers rarely do it easily.

Of late, every game has been a grind; coming down to the final minutes andyesterday was no different.

However, this time was the first time they had to come back from a significant deficit, and the speed at which they roared back showed a sign well equipped to deal with all sorts of potential adversity.

It wasn’t entirely champagne basketball, not that it will be a concern to the Breakers coaching staff.

The early moments were particularly punishing, with the Bullets throwing alleyoops into the crowd, while it took nine minutes for a Breaker to score more than two points.

Neither team was hitting threes, and turnovers were the early currency of choice, but that signified a brighter spell of basketball to come.

It was a tight first half – a staple of Breakers basketball, it seems – with the biggest lead for either side just four points, and the Breakers up just 35-34 at half-time.

It was their Australian big men doing the damage, with Tom Jervis (16 points, seven rebounds) converting inside, and the soft touch of Daniel Kickert (14 points, 13 rebounds) providing plenty of problems for his opposing bigs.

They started to get support from their big men, with Travis Trice sparking to life, and Perrin Buford throwing down some thunderous dunks as the Bullets built their nine point buffer.

Just as the Bullets started to fire, the Breakers found their rhythm.

Rob Loe converted a four-point play, while Newbill hit back-to-back threes and

jammed home a dunk of his own to rapidly level the scores.

All of a sudden, the Breakers had the ascendancy, and they weren’t slowing down.

As Sosa (24 points) and Newbill (19) kept things ticking over, the hosts once again turned things over to their closer, Shea Ili. Ili continued to show why he’s the Breakers’ future starting point guard, stepping up with 14 points in the final quarter, running the show as the Bullets drifted away.

The Bullets kept firing until the end, but they couldn’t hit the target as the Breakers sealed yet another win.

It finally happened yesterday but Insigne was wearing a Napoli shirt instead of the national team kit. Insigne helped the Serie A leaders beat AC Milan 2-1 and strengthen the belief of all of the country’s armchair fans. Azzurri supporters were livid with recentlyfired Italy coach Gian Piero Ventura for under-utilising Insigne in the 1-0 aggregate loss to Sweden.

Allenton in a thriller

The runs have finally flowed in the Pritchard Shield, with Allenton and Coldstream playing out a high-scoring thriller, while Lauriston turned a home wicket advantage in to a dominant win against Methven.

In the game between Coldstream and Allenton, the visiting Allenton side picked up their first win of the season, winning by 16 runs.

Given the low scoring totals that had been posted up until this week, Coldstream’s choice to bowl first seemed a logical one.

Allenton’s opening batsmen Josh Worsfold and Jordan Bird set a good platform for Allenton to build from, hitting 23 runs before Worsfold departed.

Bird stuck around for a while on his way to top-scoring with 52 runs, striking up a good third wicket partnership with Matt Tait.

The runs kept coming in the middle order as well, with Jack Meyrick hitting a half-century, Dylan Stoddart 35 and Sean Strange 32.

Andrew Bennett was the pick of the Coldstream bowlers, taking 3 for 31, while Jay Houston and Luke Sinclair both picked up two wickets.

Print was the main driving force of the pairing, providing 86 runs, while Houston supported with 19. Houston was eventually dismissed for a total of 56 runs, while 86 was Print’s total.

Rob Coyle and Bennett also contributed 25 and 26 runs respectively, but no wag from Coldstream’s tail left them short at the end of the 45 overs, with only 217 runs on the board.

Dylan Stoddart kept the tail quiet, picking up three wickets in the process, while Ryan Bell and Jack Dudley were also productive with the ball in hand, both taking two wickets.

In Lauriston, the home side won the toss and elected to bat, which proved to be a smart decision.

They eventually hit 225 runs, losing six wickets in the process, coming off a strong opening partnership from Scott Morgan and Scott Maher.

They combined to put on 76 runs for the first wicket, before Bevan Richan came in and supported well with 24 runs.

It was Nick Gilbert who was Lauriston’s main gunman however, hitting an impressive 75 not out.

Methven could only muster 70 runs in response, with Lauriston’s bowling attack proving too strong.

Alex Hooper and Ruben Early dismissed Methven’s top four for a total of 31 runs, with only one batsmen able to hit double figures in the big win.

Hartley, alongside team-mates Earl Bamber and Timo Bernhard, finished a lap behind Anthony Davidson, Kazuki Nakajima and Sebastien Buemi. It was the latter trio’s fifth win of the campaign, but still not enough to topple Hartley and his team-mates at the top of the WEC leaderboard.
