M. bovis battle continues By Linda Clarke

The Ministry for Primary Industries has admitted it underestimated the impact of its mycoplasma bovis eradication programme on farmers and their communities. Programme director Geoff Gwyn was in Ashburton on Friday with other top MPI officials to meet with a newly-formed Mid Canterbury group helping farm-

ers affected by the cattle disease. The Ashburton District is the most affected in the country, followed by Invercargill and Oamaru, because of the number of dairy and beef farmers. As of Friday, there were 49 farms nationally in the process of depopulation; 24 are in the Ashburton District. Gwyn said MPI had learned lessons from its early response after some brutally honest discussions with local leaders and farmers.

It was trying to get the process right for individual properties and farmers back in business as quickly as possible. He said the disease had taken a toll on rural communities but MPI remained confident eradication was achievable. “We still have another year of heavy lifting to go, in my view though.” Nearly 100,000 cattle have been culled in the response so far nationally and more than 1000

claims lodged for compensation. “We are trying to work out at a local level how we can put the best support around farmers,” Gwyn said. “I don’t think we thought enough about the impact on some communities, that second, third or fourth level of impact. Communities like Ashburton, Invercargill and Oamaru are the ones who are feeling the pain of the eradication programme.” Mid Canterbury farmer Peter

Reveley, who leads the local Rural Support Trust, said he had been dealing with mycoplasma bovis on his beef farm. He was issued a notice of direction, restricting movement of stock from the farm, on April 11. He was told last Thursday, the notice would be revoked.
