Bioblitz hits Clearwater P4

Scenes like this may not happen this year if Mother Nature decides to throw her toys out of the cot and disturb the conditions on the Rakaia River.

Anglers are packing their rods ready for the Rakaia River Salmon Fishing Competition, but are not sure whether they will get to use them. Rakaia River Fishing Promotions president Ken Lee said about 520 entries have been received for the threeday 36th annual event which kicks off on Friday. “Sponsors have been really good, they are on board, except Mother Nature might not be again,” Lee said. Last year Cyclone Gita intervened to call off fishing, and this year rain in the high country leading up to the weekend may see the river come up dirty and not be suitable.

The last competition there was a fishable river was in 2017, when a lot of fish were caught. “That’s what it’s all about, it’s a fishing contest, you can worry to your heart’s content, but at the end of the day it’s a great family event whether you are fishing or you are not fishing,” Lee said. Not being able to fish just meant it would be just a big social weekend, and the prizes normally awarded for best catches are drawn instead. The compere is Ashburton radio DJ Phill Hooper. Lee said the major prize last year of a $14,000 quad bike was re-gifted back to the promotions group by the winner, as he wanted to support members’ work of river improvement.

Entries are slightly down on last year overall, but juniors are up, at more than 120, compared to last year of about 115 and previous years of about 105. Among those looking forward to the competition is Charles Smith. Aged 29, he grew up in Rakaia and has been entering since the age of four. Today he lives at Rolleston, but the Rakaia remains his favourite fishing haunt. He was last there on Waitangi Day, when he caught a six-kilogram salmon in the mid reaches of the river.
