Dog owners call for commonsense By Sue Newman

Buffy Marriott might be small in size, but that doesn’t stop her wanting to run free when she’s out for her daily exercise. Like most of her mates using Argyle Park, she’s happy to run on the lead for a while, happy to play in the creek, but she also likes a bit of open space where she can run, chase a ball, or fetch a stick. But the opportunity for Buffy and her mates to run free in the park has been curtailed. Signs at each entrance spell out just where dogs can and cannot run off the leash, and none of those areas allow for games of chase and fetch. The Ashburton District Council has put up new signs at the park defining off-the-leash areas. These are along the park’s creek and under trees along Mid-

dle Road. And while the creek is a great play area for dogs, the Middle Road freerun strip is not, says Buffy’s owner Biddy Marriott. That area is close to playgrounds and it’s close to a busy road. Far better to set aside land at the western end of the park, land once used for vegetable growing, where dogs can run. It’s away from playgrounds and away from the road, Marriott said. She believes the strip along Farm Road was designated as an off-leash area in the past. Marriott and fellow dog walker Sue McGuire are in the park most days and say the dog owners they see are pretty considerate of others. They clean up dog droppings and they keep their dogs under control.
No-one is disagreeing that dogs shouldn’t be on sports fields, but most are not happy with the limited off-leash areas, they said. McGuire keeps Geordie on a leash at all times so reinforcing the park rules won’t affect her, but she said it seems unfair, particularly to owners of larger dogs who need plenty of space to run. “I just don’t see any reason why they can’t use the old vegetable area,” she said. The council’s move to take a tough line on compliance with dog rules in the park have generated letters and phone calls of objection to the Guardian newsroom.
