Lights, camera, action He could have been any man in any courtroom in the country, facing one of the most common charges on any court list yesterday. Hollywood was a long way away when Christopher Whitelaw Pine, better known in his role as Star Trek’s Captain Kirk, stood quietly in the dock of Ashburton’s small art deco district courtroom. He received no special treatment during his appearance or sentencing. A debate around media coverage took place between Judge Joanna Maze, defence counsel Marilyn Gilchrist and a media representative, taking up much of Pine’s brief appearance on a drink driving matter. He was entirely remorseful, Ms Gilchrist said. While drink drivers often claim to be remorseful, Pine’s demeanor indicated it was genuine. He labelled his actions on March 1, when he chose to drive a short distance after drinking at the Blue Pub, as “foolish”. The court was told Pine had already made a sizeable donation to the Cure Kids charity and participated in making a promotional video during his recent visit to New Zealand. Judge Maze disqualified him from driving for six months and ordered reparations of $93. She recognised his charitable donation by declining to fine him. It was over in a matter of minutes and then he left the courtroom like any ordinary offender. However, once outside Hollywood made its presence felt again and the actor was confronted by the glare of publicity, with television cameras rolling, and journalists and fans jostling for his attention.
