New era for historic church

It’s been a 10-year journey, but finally work on the restoration and strengthening of Ashburton’s historic Baring Square Church is just a few short weeks away from beginning. The $3 million project has been a controversial one, with wide-ranging opinions on the future of the building which suffered significant damage in the September 2010 earthquake. The project is funded through a mix of insurance payout, church funds, building sales and a deal struck with the Ashburton District Council on two pieces of church land. The council needed this land for its new civic centre and library that will be built in Baring Square east on the site of the old county council building.
