The lure of Mid Canterbury’s long, straight roads appears too much for some motorists to resist – with police attending more than one instance of street racing each week. Police data shows that between April 2017 and April 2018, 72 instances of street racing were recorded in Rakaia, Methven and Ashburton. Though this rate marks a slight drop on last year – and is no higher than other Canterbury districts, it forms an ongoing
problem for police, Senior Sergeant Phil Dean said. According to police and the New Zealand government, street racing or “antisocial road use” can include the occupation of areas of road “for the purpose of performing unauthorised high speed races and dangerous stunts such as ‘burnouts’ and ‘doughnuts’.” Dean said street racing only accounts for a small portion of total crashes, but can be highly annoying and irritating for those living nearby. “And these people are raising the risk
for themselves and the public.” For instances where the time and place were recorded, Friday and Saturday nights between 6pm and midnight proved most common. Dean said most local occurrences are dealt with by a specialist anti-social road user team from Christchurch, who were established in 2010 and use intelligence, local bylaws, new legislation and community support to target known offenders. Across Canterbury, the team regularly impound cars and hand out fines for anti-social driving behaviour.
