It was an eventful day for motorists on the Mt Hutt access road on Saturday, with one car going off the road, and another being consumed by fire. The first incident occurred about 7.30am, when a Methven skier, on his way to the skifield, drove off the side about five kilometres from the base of the road. The vehicle rolled about six times and came to a stop about 30 metres below the road. Miraculously the man, who was the sole occupant, was able to walk out of the wreck and get back up to the access road, where a fellow motorist transported him up to the Mt Hutt medical centre.

He was checked here and found to be fine, having sustained little more than a scratch to his head. Ski area manager James McKenzie said the accident had been caused by suspected sunstrike. As such, it was a good reminder to have a clean windscreen, keep the windscreen visor down, and wear sunglasses. “That’s the same everywhere, particularly on the mountain, as when you are driving up that time of day it does feel like you are driving into the sun,” McKenzie said. It was the first time a motorist had gone off the road for two years, the last incident also representing a lucky escape when a Frenchman was driving down too fast for the conditions and went off

the road at Cutting Edge Corner. There have been big improvements made to the safety of the road in recent years, with barriers installed at its most treacherous locations. Mt Hutt staff were planning on retrieving the vehicle yesterday. Later on the Saturday morning, about 11.25am, a car caught fire on the road and was destroyed. The road was closed for a short time to both uphill and downhill traffic as the Methven Volunteeer Fire Brigade responded. No further details were available from the brigade by deadline yesterday. It was the second mobile property fire its members had responded to for the day, with the first at 5.41am.
