Evasive burglar back in custody Convicted burglar Shaun Nathan Hurst is back in custody after evading police for two months. The Ashburton District Court issued a warrant for Hurst’s arrest on May 14 after the 24-year-old failed to appear for sentence on charges of burglary, theft and dishonestly using a stolen bank card. He had been told jail was the likely outcome. Hurst used a hammer to smash a window at Stirling Sports earlier this year and made off with an armful of clothing worth about $3000. He was spotted leaving the store, dropping clothes as he went and found in nearby public toilets. He also admitted shoplifting nearly

$800 in groceries and other items, and dishonestly using a stolen bank card. Police have also laid a new burglary charge relating to a break-in at the Tinwald Tavern on the same night as Stirling Sports was burgled in January. Hurst was apprehended recently and appeared in the Ashburton court yesterday before Judge Joanna Maze. She remanded him in custody to August 13 for sentencing. Duty solicitor Paul Norcross made an application for bail and said Hurst consented to a 24-hour curfew. Police were opposed. Judge Maze said Hurst posed a significant flight risk and it was important the sentencing take place.
The new burglary charge and one other of unlawfully getting into a vehicle were also adjourned to August 13. Norcross said Hurst suffered from depression and anxiety and had left his previous bail address for a rural property where he had space to deal with his issues. He said Hurst also wanted the opportunity to put forward an address for an electronically-monitored (EM) sentence like home detention. Judge Maze asked for an EM report on any address offered, so it could be considered at sentencing. No pleas were entered on the new charges.
