An Ashburton man has been left devastated after treasured items belonging to his late wife were stolen. Gavin Borthwick and his 11-yearold daughter returned home from an Australian holiday on Tuesday expecting to enjoy the last week of the school holidays. However, when they arrived home, they were shocked to discover their house had been burgled. While a large quantity of items were stolen, Mr Borthwick was most upset to find jewellery belonging to
his late wife Anna had also been taken. Among the possessions stolen were rings passed down to his daughter from her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and a pearl necklace worn by Anna on her wedding day. The burglary was another blow for Mr Borthwick, who farewelled Anna after a battle with breast cancer just over a year ago. It has been a tough few years for the family as Anna had suffered a serious brain injury before her cancer diagnosis. The loss of his wife’s jewellery has
been devastating for Mr Borthwick, who described the rings as some of the most precious things his daughter owned. “You have a child who’s already lost her mother and those are the keepsake things she would get to wear herself one day and feel a little connection with her,” he said. Mr Borthwick said while other items had been taken during the break-in, he was only concerned with getting his late wife’s possessions back.
