Crash closes highway By Susan Sandys

State Highway 77 between Ashburton and Methven was closed for several hours yesterday in the wake of a serious crash. Police were called to the Methven Highway about 3.20am following a report of a car crashing into a pole. Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade members and St John personnel also attended. St John transported one patient in a critical condition to Christchurch Hospital. A St John spokesperson said the number
of ambulances attending had been five, due to the location of the crash and the nature of the patient’s injuries. EA Networks network manager Brendon Quinn said the guy pole the car crashed into was completely broken off and demolished by the impact. One customer lost power, but this was restored within one hour of the accident. Police could not say whether speed, alcohol or wet road conditions may have contributed to the crash. “The circumstances surrounding the
crash are now under investigation, and as such police cannot speculate on the cause,” a spokesperson said. The Serious Crash Unit was called in to examine the scene, and the road was closed with diversions in place. The road reopened about 8.45am. Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade was unavailable to provide any information on its response to the crash yesterday. The crash is the latest event in what has been an appalling year on the district’s roads.
Mid Canterbury’s road toll sits at eight – a 50-year old man near Mayfield last month, an Ashburton couple at the intersection of Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road and Waimarama Road in June, a mother and her two young children near Ashburton in April, a woman after a two vehicle crash at Coldstream in March, and a 79-year-old man on the Maronan Road bridge in February. The eight deaths compare to just one last year, three in 2017, two in 2016 and two in 2015. They comprise one quarter of Canterbury’s toll of 32 for the year to date.
