Horror crash kills two

Members of the public reported seeing a vehicle weaving dangerously through State Highway 1 traffic just moments before a horror crash left two drivers dead yesterday.

A small truck and car collided at the intersection with Withells Road and Ealing Road near the Rangitata Bridge shortly before 1.40pm.

Emergency services includ-

ing Police, Fire and Emergency crews, St John ambulance crews and the Serious Crash Unit were called to the scene where they encountered a vehicle so badly mangled, “you couldn’t even tell what kind of car it was”.

The two drivers were the only occupants of their vehicles and both died at the scene.

The area was closed to all traffic, with diversions put in place at Delamaine Street, Hinds and at State Highway 79, Rangitata,

with a large number of vehicles asked to turn around.

Senior Sergeant Phil Dean of Ashburton Police said the Serious Crash Unit were working at the scene to determine the cause of the crash.

At the early stages, he said it appeared to be a head-on collision.

One witness at the scene said the car had flipped upside down upon colliding with the truck.

believed police had been alerted to the dangerous behaviour of the driver shortly before the incident occurred.

The crash appeared to have occurred in the northbound lane.

In October and November 2017, two crashes occurred near the same intersection, injuring a total of eight people.

Just last Friday a serious crash occurred slightly further south, at the intersection between State Highway 1 and Rangitata Island

Road, leaving one person critically injured and three people with minor injuries.

Yesterday afternoon, Dean expected police would be spending some time piecing together what had happened.

However, he said they were aware of the need to minimise the impact for other drivers slowed down by the diversions.

The crash takes the national road toll to 291 people in the year to date.

Best closing weekend on record for Mt Hutt skifield

When 45 centimetres of snow fell at Mt Hutt on Friday, management may have felt Mother Nature was messing with them.

Finally the big snowfall they had been waiting for all season had arrived – three days out from closing.

But it ended up better late than never as skiers flocked to the mountain to enjoy the dry powder conditions.

It was the largest snowfall for the whole season in what was overall a lean snow year as the base hovered around one metre.

Manager James McKenzie said despite the lateseason fall being in spring, the snow itself was of mid-winter quality, and “an absolute dream to ski on”.

The fantastic conditions resulted in the best closing weekend ever for the skifield, with 3500 skiers and snowboarders throughout the two days.

The ski area closed for the day on Friday as the snow fell in strong southerly winds, leaving large drifts to clear. The skifield opened by about 12.30pm on Saturday to large crowds, and then for the day on Sunday.

“We had two really good days with fresh snow, it was just an awesome way to finish the season,” McKenzie said.

The fall ensured most off-trail skiing could open, and there was increased lower mountain coverage to the bottom of the triple chair.

It is believed to have topped off a stellar ski season with high skier numbers, which Mt Hutt plans to give more details about within the next two weeks as it announces its improvements for next year.

The ski area has already started selling season passes for 2019, holding the price at 2018 levels.

Elderly couple forced to live in fear An elderly Ashburton couple told a judge they live in fear after a former employee threatened arson and to shoot them following a workplace dispute.

The pair, aged 65 and 70, were yesterday speaking directly to Ashburton District Court Judge Joanna Maze, who was sentencing Daniel Alexander Kahui on two charges of threatening to kill.

Kahui, 49, listened as the woman and the man, both in tears, said they no longer felt safe in their own home and feared running into Kahui in the community.

The woman said she had never

experienced such threats and abuse as delivered by Kahui when he lost control during an arranged meeting.

“He is a time bomb waiting to go off.”

The man said he was in constant fear Kahui or one of his associates would deliver on the threat.

But from the dock yesterday, Kahui said he was sorry and his threats were empty.

“No-one is coming to get you. I don’t have any criminal friends.”

The charges arose when Kahui and the man met in July to discuss an employment issue.

Kahui flew into a rage when the man started to record the exchange.

He then told the man if he complained to police he would burn him out, shoot his wife and when she had healed come back and shoot her or the man again.

The man called the police but Kahui told them his words were in the heat of the moment.

Kahui’s lawyer Roz Burnside said her client had been concerned about workplace safety and had also spoken with WorkSafe.

It was accepted he over-reacted

at the meeting with his boss in July “and it was without thought he spoke the offending words to the victim. For that he is very sorry and remorseful”, she said.

She said Kahui wanted the court to know there was no real meaning or threat in the words, they were just “hot air and empty threats”.

He has since found other work in the forestry industry. a Judge Maze sentenced Kahui to four months community detention, with a daily curfew of 7pm until 6am.

She said the safety concerns

behind the dispute were beyond the scope of her sentencing, but Kahui’s over-reaction had been disproportionate to the concerns.

“Those were undoubtedly frightening words for the victims and plainly both charges relate to the fact that two people were threatened and it is very clear in listening to both victims address me, they remain deeply afraid.

It is made worse by the fact you all live in relative proximity.”

She said Kahui had earlier convictions for violence in 2009 and 2000.

Migrants needed ‘to boost economy’

With the Ashburton District’s unemployment running at a 10 year low, a move to regionalise migration could ease the district’s job vacancy crisis says mayor Donna Favel.

Australia has already committed to cutting new migrant numbers in three major cities in favour of smaller towns and suggestions that a similar move could come in New Zealand would be welcomed, she said.

Immigration minster Iain Lees-Galloway has already committed to making it easier for regional worker shortages to be met from New Zealand’s annual tally of migrants, but Favel believes incentives will be needed to ensure that happens.

Ashburton is one of five district’s piloting a Welcoming Communities project that aims to support New Zealand communities to become more welcoming to newcomers.

Favel said she had talked to employers across a wide range of industries and the common theme with virtually every one was that they struggled to find staff – the right staff.

The district’s unemployment was just 1.9 per cent but while increasing immigrant numbers into the district would help fill jobs, Ashburton would be competing with several other regions, including neighbours Timaru and Selwyn, for numbers, she said.

“As a district, across the board, we’re short of people and people tell me they’re struggling to fill vacancies.”

Favel said one of the criticism she heard was that job vacancies did not always match Immigration New Zealand’s skills shortage lists, even the Canterbury regional list.

“So maybe those industries need to be involved in advocacy to get the skills they need onto that list,” she said.

Migrants became a real asset to a community because they most often came with families and were looking to stay in the area and build a new life, Favel said.

That was in sharp contrast to Kiwi millennials who changed jobs regularly and often became part of the multi-million strong workforce of international gypsies.

“Gone are the days when you worked in one job for life. Millennials reinvent themselves many times,” she said.

The appeal of casual work combined with travel was demonstrated in the huge seasonal workforce Mt Hutt Skifield managed to secure every year, Favel said.

“As well as those, we want migrant workers who’ll come, work and stay. But it’s not easy for people to leave their home country and to make a new start.

The whole community has a role to play in making them feel welcome.”

People couldn’t be forced to come to the district to work; they had to have compelling reasons to do so, and as a community and employers we had to provide the incentives that would make them choose us over other districts, she said.

Offline life going same way as many of NZ’s birds

New Zealand’s annual Bird of the Year contest means a lot to Nicky Dunn of Ashburton.

But just like many of the birds on the list, her way of doing things is quickly becoming extinct.

The 87-year-old simply wanted to fill out a form in order to lodge her preference for a winner. However, when she opened her quarterly Forest and Bird magazine, there was no form to be found.

“Usually they have a page printed in the magazine that you can put your choice on, and you can tear it out. But not this year, oh no, it’s gone all modern and it’s ‘vote dot com’ and all the rest of it,” the Coldstream Lifecare and Village resident said.

“But I don’t have any of these modern devices.”

Dunn decided to put pen to paper and write a letter to Forest and Bird to let them know her preference – the tomtit.

“They were quite intrigued any-

body would go to the bother of writing a letter, but I write letters every day.”

Next thing Dunn found herself the focus of national media attention as Radio New Zealand landed on her doorstep and interviewed her about her love of birdlife.

She told the Guardian that as much as she liked the Bird of the Year contest winner announced yesterday, the kereru, it was not nearly as beguiling as the tomtit.

“It’s the dearest wee black and white bird,” Dunn said.

“Who could resist that wee darling.”

She had seen them in the Canterbury foothills, and enjoyed regularly viewing many other birds on her daily walk through the Ashburton Domain, including thrushes, blackbirds, starlings, sparrows, black billed gulls, fantails and wax-eyes.

The tomtit was midfield in the contest, placing 28th with 463 votes. It was a little ahead of Ashburton’s black billed gull on 441

votes, which placed 30th, from the large field of 61 native birds. The winning kereru, or wood pigeon, received 5833 votes.

Forest and Bird Ashburton president Edith Smith said the branch was considering launching a public relations campaign to drum up support for the black billed gull in next year’s contest, although she was not sure it could ever win due to its lack of stand-out features.

“It’s very similar to a lot of seabirds and other gulls,” Smith said.

Forest and Bird New Zealand media advisor Megan Hubscher said it was too expensive to print out voting forms, but bird lovers could vote by calling the 0800 number, or writing as Dunn had.

“We cast Nicky’s vote on her behalf of the tomtit/miromiro,” Hubscher said. And many of the votes received by the species had come in after Dunn featured on Radio New Zealand.

“So well done Nicky for helping raise the national profile of the lovely tomtit.”

Drink driver had high alcohol level A 43-year-old Ashburton meat worker is facing an electronicallymonitored sentence of community detention after he was caught driving with 1111 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

The legal limit is 250mcg.

Todd Henseltine Wilson pleaded guilty to a charge of drink driving when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Wilson was stopped and breath-tested at 5am on September 16 while driving on Archibald Street. He told police he was driving home from a friend’s house.

His 1111mcg level also qualifies him for an alcohol interlock device.

Judge Joanna Maze remanded Wilson for sentence on November 19 and asked for the pre-sentence report to look at the suitability of community detention.

She said Wilson’s situation was serious given his high level and a previous conviction for refusing to give a specimen for alcohol analysis in 2011.

Others to appear before Judge Maze included: Katya Alejandra McCallum, 19, a hairdresser, admitted drink

driving on West Street on October 7. She was breath-tested while driving home from a party at 2.30am and blew 751mcg.

She was fined $600 and ordered to pay $130 court costs. She was also disqualified from driving for six months.

Paige Louise Balloch, 24, admitted drink driving on Forest Drive in Methven. She blew 598mcg after being breath-tested about 8pm on September 15.

She was fined $450, ordered to pay $130 court costs and disqualified from driving for six months.

Fakaanaua He Lotu Fa’oa, 21, blew 600mcg when he was breath-tested by police on Havelock Street on September 29. He said he was picking up family.

He was fined $450, ordered to pay court costs $130 and disqualified from driving for six months.

Devoe Tairawhiti Rogan, 23, was also remanded to December 17 for sentence after admitting a charge of assault with intent to injure.

Rogan had spent the night drinking with friends before he was asked to leave the party

about 6am on August 26 because of some inappropriate behaviour.

He fought with the complainant as she escorted him out, grabbing her around the neck, sitting astride her, then punching her in the head and face.

Rogan was granted bail and will live in Napier until sentencing.

His lawyer Gretchen Hart said he was motivated to take part in a restorative justice meeting and he had been friends with the complainant for eight years.

Ruben Michael Freitas, 18, of Methven, admitted driving while his licence was suspended because of excess demerit points.

Freitas was driving to buy his lunch when he was stopped by police on August 13 for not wearing a seat belt. He was not supposed to be driving until the suspension period ended in November.

Judge Maze convicted him and ordered him to pay $130 court costs, and disqualified him from driving for six months from November.

after he pleaded guilty to assaulting a woman.

Edwards and the complainant argued after he found her in the company of another man. Police intervened in the fight after they were called by a member of the public.

Pita Rapata Matiu Edwards, 38, a meat grader of Ashburton, admitted a charge of common assault. He was remanded to December 17 for sentence.

Police said Edwards and his partner got into an argument over disciplining their children and he pushed her.

A 22-year-old man faced a raft of charges including shoplifting, theft from a vehicle and fraud.

Elvis Purua, of Tinwald, admitted some charges and denied others.

He will appear again on October 29.

Police said Purua went to Countdown in July and took meat packs worth $67 from his shopping basket and put them in his backpack. He then left without paying.

He also went to the Warehouse on two separate occasions and stole clothing and sports bags

worth $310. He had previously been trespassed from the Ashburton store.

He also stole a beanie from an Ashburton petrol station.

Temana Reuben, 24, was sentenced to nine months supervision and 80 hours community work after admitting a charge of assault with intent to injure.

He was grossly intoxicated when he punched his victim in the face four times then kicked her when she lay on the ground.

Judge Maze said the case had been through restorative justice, where Reuben had offered heartfelt apologies.

Supevision will include courses to deal with anger management, violence and drug and alcohol abuse.

Joshua David Victor Falanisi, 30, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon in six months after he admitted breaching a protection order by sending text messages.

A warrant was issued for the arrest of Jayden James McCormick, who faces two fraud charges. He failed to appear yesterday.

Year 11 student Phoebe Scarsbrook has a vision to give the youth of Mid and South Canterbury a strong voice and a reason to be involved in their communities.

The Temuka teenager says she has always liked helping others – and now she’ll have a chance to apply that commitment to social justice as the new Youth MP for Rangitata.

Scarsbrook was one of 17 applicants, including six from Mid Canterbury, to write to MP for Rangitata Andrew Falloon for the opportunity to sit in Youth Parliament next year.

She was informed on Saturday that she had been selected and would be winging her way to Wellington next July for two days of Youth Parliament.

Youth Parliament is only held every three years.

Scarsbrook’s application was largely inspired by a recent trip to Murupara, north of Rotorua, where she observed deprivation and gang culture and spoke with people who are “so friendly and giving even though they have nothing”.

Police focus on crashed ute

Police are making enquiries following a car crash on the side of the Methven Highway on Sunday morning.

A ute veered off the road, swiped a power pole and collided with a farm fence between Thompsons Track and Springfield West Road shortly before 6.50am.

Emergency services including Methven Fire and Emergency, Police and St John Ambulance were called to the scene.

A police spokesperson advised that there was only one person in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The occupant had no serious injuries but was transported to hospital by ambulance, they said.

The vehicle remained at the scene yesterday morning surrounded by police

Brexit issues still remain A flurry of talks between Britain and the European Union ended without a Brexit agreement, leaving the two sides three days to close a gap in their positions before a make-or-break summit.

An unscheduled, face-to-face meeting between EU negotiator Michel Barnier and British Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab, and a hastily scheduled meeting of 27 EU ambassadors in Brussels, had sparked speculation that the long-awaited deal was imminent.

Barnier dashed those hopes, writing on Twitter: “Despite intense efforts, some key issues are still open” in the divorce talks. The key stumbling block remains the need “to avoid a hard border” between Ireland and the UK’s Northern Ireland after Brexit, he said.

British Prime Minister Theresa May is under intense pressure from her Conservative Party and its parliamentary allies not to give any more ground in negotiations, especially on the border issue.

The British government said in a statement there were still “unresolved issues” but insisted negotiators had made “real progress” toward a divorce agreement.

The lack of a breakthrough on the border increased the chances that the Brexit negotiations will fail to produce an agreement spelling out how the EU will interact with its former member and vice versa. EU officials have warned that real progress is needed at the summit

The British government said it remained committed to making progress at the summit. An EU official said no further negotiations were planned before the leaders of EU countries convene in Brussels. Both sides previously agreed that a special November meeting would be the deadline for reaching an agreement since Britain is set to leave the EU on March 29.

The EU and the UK are seeking an elusive compromise position on the difficult Irish border question ahead of the summit. The Irish backstop is the main hurdle to a deal that spells out the terms of Britain’s departure from the EU and future relationship with the bloc.

After Brexit, the currently invisible frontier between North-

ern Ireland and Ireland will be the UK’s only land border with an EU nation. Britain and the EU agree there must be no customs checks or other infrastructure on the border, but do not agree on how that can be accomplished.

Raab, Britain’s Brexit secretary made a last minute trip for an in-person meeting with Barnier.

“With several big issues still to resolve, including the Northern Ireland backstop, it was jointly agreed that face-to-face talks were necessary,” Raab’s office said.

The EU’s backstop solution – to keep Northern Ireland in a customs union with the bloc – has been rejected by Britain because it would require checks between Northern Ireland and

the rest of the UK. The alternative – to keep the entire UK in a customs union until a permanent solution can be found – has outraged proBrexit members of May’s divided government, who claim that approach would limit the country’s ability to strike new trade deals around the world.

The idea is also anathema to the Democratic Unionist Party, a Northern Ireland Protestant party that props up May’s minority government.

So even if May strikes a deal with Brussels, she will struggle to get it past her government and Parliament at home.

Raab’s predecessor, David Davis, wrote in the Sunday Times that May’s plans for continued close economic ties with the EU even after Britain leaves the bloc is “completely unacceptable” and must be stopped by her ministers.

May is struggling to build a consensus behind her Brexit plans ahead of a Cabinet meeting that will be followed by the EU summit. If Davis’ call for a rebellion is effective, the Cabinet meeting is likely to be fractious.

Davis and former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson resigned from May’s Cabinet this summer to protest her Brexit blueprint. May’s Brexit plan has also been rejected by leaders of the main opposition Labour Party, further dimming the prime minister’s hopes of winning parliamentary backing for any Brexit deal she reaches with EU officials.

Election results could affect German govt German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative allies have lost their absolute majority in Bavaria’s state parliament by a wide margin in a regional election, a result that could cause more turbulence within the national government.

The Christian Social Union was on course to take around 37 per cent of the vote, down from 47.7 per cent five years ago, projections for ARD and ZDF public television indicated on Sunday. The projections were based on exit polls and a partial vote.

If they are confirmed in the

final count, it would be the party’s worst performance in Bavaria, which it has traditionally dominated, since 1950.

Constant squabbling in Merkel’s national government and a power struggle at home have weighed on the CSU, which is traditionally a touch more right-wing than the chancellor’s party and has taken a hard line on migration.

There were gains for parties to its left and right.

The Greens were expected to win up to 18 per cent to secure second place, more than double their support in 2013.

And the far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD, was set to enter the state legislature with around 11 per cent of the vote.

The centre-left Social Democrats, Merkel’s other coalition partner in Berlin, were on course for a disastrous fifthplace result of 10 per cent or less, half of what the party received in 2013 and its worst in the state since World War Two. The CSU has governed Bavaria, the prosperous southeastern state that is home to some 13 million of Germany’s 82 million people, for more than six decades.

Needing coalition partners to govern is itself a major setback for the party, which only exists in Bavaria and held an absolute majority in the state parliament for all but five of the past 56 years.

A pro-business party, the Free Democrats, may or may not secure the 5 per cent of the vote needed to hold seats in the state parliament.

The Greens, traditionally bitter opponents of the CSU, with a more liberal approach to migration and an emphasis on environmental issues, are another possible partner. – AP

The pair announced their engagement in May just a few weeks after they had started dating. The headlines at the time made mention of the engagement ring, valued around $100,000. Grande is reportedly going through a difficult time of her life, having tweeted that she needs a break from the spotlight. Grande has reportedly been struggling to cope with the death of her ex-boyfriend, rapper Mac Miller.

Flack ready to sing again Once a week, Roberta Flack gives a musical performance for an exclusive group. The lucky audience consists of a musical director. It would be an important exercise for any singer, but even more critical given that the 81-year-old singer had a stroke more than two years ago and suffered a collapse earlier this year.

The public will get a chance to hear the result of those musical tuneups, courtesy of the Jazz Foundation of America, when it honours her Saturday. “I am very excited about the event, to sing, and to perform. I’m just hoping that I can find the right song,” said Flack.

Hurricane leaves Portugal battered A weakened hurricane Leslie has slammed into the coast of Portugal, leaving 27 people injured as it uprooted trees, brought down power lines and smashed store windows with gusting winds and heavy rain.

People were forced to leave their homes by the storm and over 300,000 people were hit by power outages overnight, Luis Belo Costa of Portugal’s National Protection Agency said.

He also gave the injury toll but added that none of the injuries were life-threatening.

Leslie had been downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane to a post-tropical cyclone with winds of 110km/h by the time it landed on Portugal’s Atlantic coast.

But state broadcaster RTP said Leslie’s wind speeds reached 170km/h in the coastal town of Figueira da Foz, 200km

north of Lisbon. Portugal’s weather service had issued red warnings for high winds or dangerous coastal conditions for 13 of its 18 mainland districts, including Lisbon.

Winds sent trees crashing on to cars and footpaths in the Portuguese capital and in the northern city of Porto.

Over 200 power lines were affected by the storm, according to reports.

Leslie moved east across the Iberian Peninsula to Spain, where authorities issued warnings for heavy rains and storm conditions for the northern part of the country.

Leslie is a bit of a weather outlier since hurricanes that regularly batter the American side of the Atlantic rarely bring their destructive power all the way across the ocean to Europe.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan arrived in Sydney yesterday, a day before they officially start a 16-day tour of Australia and the South Pacific. The trip is their only international tour since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were married in May, apart from a two-day visit to Ireland.

The prince and the former American actress landed on an overcast morning after a commercial flight from London with a brief stopover in Singapore. They have 76 engagements scheduled over 16 days in Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand. The couple had no official functions following the 22-hour flight to Australia.

BDO lawyer Mark O’Brien focused in court on loans from Mainzeal to Richina to fund the purchase of the Shanghai Leather Company in late 2004 and 2005.

The loans grew over the years from $7-to-$8 million to $35-to$40 million of accumulated debt.

O’Brien questioned the lack of any formal legal security or guarantees for the loans, but Shipley said Mainzeal’s charter made it clear its parent would cover its financial responsibilities.

“And in my experience, that is what happened.”

In her brief of evidence, Shipley said Richina provided money for the refurbishment of Mainzeal House in Wellington and also sent pre-paid Chinese construction materials to New Zealand, which Mainzeal used in its construction projects.

Shipley said there was no reason to think Richina wouldn’t pay money it owed.

“Nothing had changed to make the board think it needed to cease trading.

“Our liquidity and legacy claims (including significant leaky buildings claims) were being managed, we had a good forward book of work, and Richard (Yan, Richina NZ’s chairman) continued to reinforce that the group’s commitment to funding and supply of materials was ongoing, unchanged, and expanding in its scope.”

Shipley said that right up until mid-January 2013, just days before the company went into liquidation, Yan, who was also on the Mainzeal board, was reassuring directors that the Chinese company would support the New Zealand arm.

It was only on January 29, 2013 that Yan sent a “completely unexpected” formal letter saying directors of the Chinese company wouldn’t be providing any more support in the form of pre-paid materials, and suggesting a board meeting to consider asking the bank to appoint receivers.

“This letter ... was a huge disappointment to me given Richard’s repeated assurances as recently as 22 January,” Shipley said.

She called Mainzeal’s struggles in 2012 a “perfect storm” and said that Yan’s letter had “totally undermined our credibility” with the BNZ. “I believed that I had done all I could to work in the best interests of all shareholders, creditors and staff of Mainzeal.”

‘Perfect storm’ says Shipley Directors of failed construction firm Mainzeal had no reason to question promises from its Chinese parent the company would get the financial support it needed to stay afloat, former Prime Minister Jenny Shipley told the High Court yesterday.

Mainzeal went into liquidation in February 2013 after Chinese company Richina Pacific didn’t provide the final funding it needed and the Bank of New Zealand pulled the plug.

Mainzeal owed at least $115 million to unsecured creditors, many of them subcontractors on building projects.

Liquidators BDO say Mainzeal directors should have known there was a significant risk it wouldn’t get back millions of dollars lent to the Chinese parent company from 2004 onwards and that the company was technically insolvent at the end of 2010, or possibly before.

Directors breached their duties by not stopping trading in January or July 2011, before subcontractors lost more money, BDO says.

Shipley, who was chair of Mainzeal and also on the Richina board, argued in court that the Richina group had substantial assets in China and New Zealand and had been providing both money and assurances of their continuing support right up to January 2013.

Directors had no reason to doubt there would be future funds available.

“That was absolutely understood by the directors involved, and these created no doubt that

Michael Hill International is finding it harder to shift away from discount pricing than it anticipated, posting an 8.8 per cent decline in first-quarter sales.

The jewellery chain’s sales from continuing operations fell to $112.12 million in the three months ended September 30 from A122.9 million a year earlier.

Same-store sales posted a sharper decline of 11 per cent.

The retailer restructured its business this year, quitting the US and exiting its Emma & Roe sub-brand to focus on high-margin sales and improving its use of other sales channels, such as online.

Gross margin improved in the quarter to 64.6 per cent from 63.1 per cent.

Chief executive Phil Taylor said that strategy is still the right one, however, the move away from discounting needed more spending on marketing and advertising.

Mt Hutt skifield a marketer’s dream A

nd so, another season up on Mid Canterbury’s grand old lady Mt Hutt comes to a close.

Whether you’re a snow fan or not, the success of one of the most significant tourist attractions in the South Island is a big deal for us. In fact, for so many people – the continued rise of the Mt Hutt Skifield is a continuing way of life for so many.

And that doesn’t just mean those who work on the slopes either, Mt Hutt’s reach and ability to draw people from all over is a huge calling card for the Mid Canterbury region.

But to many down here at ground zero, it seems as though

that significance is well lost.

A recent survey, conducted on the Guardian website, showed that nearly three-quarters of the people who responded never venture up the mountain during the winter.

That’s a hugely significant percentage considering the ease of access and location.

From Methven, you can be

up on the slopes within an hour of leaving the township – it just doesn’t get much handier than that.

But as a district, we are effectively ignoring it.

Sure, there’s a certain group of locals who will, every season, use Mt Hutt as their weekend escape, or the odd reason for a much needed day away from the office, but as a whole, we’re not that fussed it would seem.

And that’s probably where the mountain is a victim of its own success.

Because of the huge numbers of out-of-towners who trek over the Rakaia or Rangitata rivers to head up the skifield, we don’t often

hear of it struggling for numbers – and therefore that sense of pride doesn’t kick in and we tend to remain with our feet on solid ground.

What we’ve got is a marketer’s dream. A mountain that is selfsufficient in its own successes and one which tends to feed off itself without too much else required.

There’s a fantastic team of staff behind the scenes who ensure it all ticks over nicely, but the people of Mid Canterbury play a part too.

Most, without even knowing it, but we all play a big part.

Our friendliness, hospitality and services are also major reasons why people come back.

They love to have coffee at our cafes, lunch in our restaurants and drinks in our bars.

They then head back to their own little corner of the globe and share their experiences and then, all of sudden, the next wave of visitors are already planning ahead to be here next year.

So, hats off to everyone for another great winter season, especially the team at Mt Hutt who work above and beyond to ensure the safety and the enjoyment of everyone who makes their way up the hill.

Let’s hope that the success of that thundering great big mountain that looks over us continues for many years to come.

Down on the farm, farmers are carrying on doing the good stuff, trying to, and in plenty of cases now, getting ahead of the game of improving New Zealand’s waterways and on-farm freshwater management.

Keeping up with the good science A

couple of big announcements last week have had us talking to the media about freshwater management and climate change.

My message to the media and the rest of New Zealand has been, “while things are playing out in Wellington, farmers are getting on with the job”.

While the politicians set up working groups and line up more scientists to give them a raft of different opinions (some of them not based on much science), I’ve been telling the media at every opportunity that farmers are continually adopting better technologies and systems that many not from a farm would be aware of or understand.

Loss solutions mulled Loss-making Fonterra is not rethinking its profit retentions and dividend payout policy as part of its current strategic review.

This despite a poor retentions history being considered to be partly responsible for its weak balance sheet and share price performance.

Fonterra’s stated dividend policy is a 70 per cent payout and critics say for 10 years it has made no meaningful retentions.

Opinion among the big cooperative’s farmer-owners and industry observers is firmly on the side of retentions being used to help rebuild its balance sheet, but Fonterra said: “The retention and dividend policy is not part of the strategic review”.

Fonterra Shareholders’ Council chairman Duncan Coull: “The question needs to be asked, what are the impediments to growing value for shareholders and if the answer to that is capital and we want to remain true to who we are being a cooperative, then yes, shareholders need to have a discussion around retentions.”

Asked if he was surprised the company’s internal strategic review was not considering retentions and dividend policy, Coull declined to comment.

“One could argue as a co-operative we’ve been half pregnant for 17 years. We’ve been talking about growing value yet as farmers we haven’t left any on the table because most of what Fonterra has earned has been paid to farmers in the way of dividend.

“If we are serious as a co-operative, farmers need to start thinking about whether we need to get serious about growing a valueadded business and if capital is required to do that then retentions may be required.”

But Coull said Fonterra leaders had to “earn” the right to further

capital and retentions.

“I think there’s some way to go to rebuilding trust in that respect.”

Coull said Fonterra’s farmers had already made “a strong retention” this year when the board shifted 5c/kg of their due milk price into the earnings side of the balance sheet.

A shareholder, who declined to be named, said retentions “are probably the only choice” to repair the balance sheet.

“The problem they’ll have with selling assets is they’ll be deemed to be an urgent seller and that’s not great for maximising price.”

Fonterra this week reduced its milk price forecast for the current season to a range of $6.25$6.50/kg milksolids, down from $6.75.

Dairy industry specialist analyst TDB Advisory said the key strategic question facing Fonterra was not about its mix of funding or its retention rate.

“It’s about Fonterra sorting out what is its core business and what is its strategy and structure that will best add value to shareholders,” said director Phil Barry.

“Once it’s got that right, the next question is how does it fund its strategy.”

Barry said different retentions suited different companies at different times. He noted young dairy companies A2 and Synlait had always had 100 per cent retention rates.

TDB, in a recent report, said Fonterra’s dividend distributions had been volatile and had not shown any clear trend over time.

The lowest dividend had been 7c/kg milksolids and the highest 59c/kg. On average, the annual dividend had been 29c/kg, the same as the dividend in 2001, the year Fonterra was created from an industry mega-merger. - NZME

Lincoln University’s Ag Research campus will be the site of a new seed base for PGG Wrightson.

New seed base for PGW

PGG Wrightson will have a new seed base of 90 staff by next year at a research and innovation hub at the AgResearch campus opposite Lincoln University.

A building is being developed by rural service company PGW for its seed division and is expected to be completed by mid-2019.

PGW Group seed and grain general manager John McKenzie said it made good sense for PGW to join its main research and business partners.

“I visited the site … and construction of the building is really taking shape. Our Christchurchbased team are looking forward to being closer to their Lincolnbased Kimihia Research Centre colleagues, as well as our strategic partners.”

The building will allow the PGW Seeds team to be placed near AgResearch, Lincoln University, and Plant and Food Research.

“Moving our Christchurch office-based team to Lincoln provides our staff with the opportunity to work even more closely and interact with our key partners,’’ he said.

McKenzie said the Lincoln base would expose its operation to Lincoln University students and provide more opportunity for post graduate students to work with the team.

AgResearch chief executive Dr Tom Richardson said the investment by PGW Seeds further advanced the innovation precinct concept proposed by AgResearch in its campus development strategy.

The campus would allow more seamless collaboration between students, academics, researchers and business.

“We will soon see construction starting just across the road from this PGW Seeds development, at the site of new Lincoln University-AgResearch joint facility,

which will house 700 scientists, academics and students working side by side to address New Zealand’s biggest challenges and opportunities,’’ he said.

Richardson said he was pleased with the approaches AgResearch was getting from businesses enquiring about options to join it in Lincoln. He said its plan had always been to rejuvenate the wider Lincoln precinct as a result of the research organisation’s investment and staff movements to Lincoln and the PGW Seeds development was a major milestone towards this direction. Working closely together would enable it to deliver better research and an even more skilled workforce to support land-based industries into the future.

“Technologically, things are evolving quickly in agriculture systems and food production, and organisations working in this space have to be well-positioned to change with it.”

Meat exports rise

Red meat exports rose by $1.2 billion to more than $6.7b for the 2017-18 season.

The 21 per cent increase from the previous year was on the back of high values and increased volumes of lamb, mutton and beef, says Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ).

“While the highlights of the season were record high average values per tonne for lamb and mutton, the average value of beef exports remained high since the marked increase in 2014-15,” says B+LNZ’s chief economist Andrew Burtt.

The latest export figures exclude veal and co-products.

Burtt said good farm-gate prices and strong export values per tonne remained throughout the season, which included the fast start to the processing season driven by dry conditions in December.

Total lamb exports were more than $3.1b, up 25 per cent from 2016-17 and 28 per cent higher than the five-year average. The average value of lamb exports stayed at more than $10,000 per tonne for the entire season. These levels were reached occasionally in 2010-11 and 2011-12, but not across the entire season.

Total mutton exports benefited from lim-

ited international supply and strong demand to reach $618 million, up 46 per cent on the previous year.

Increasing demand for sheepmeat from China, particularly mutton, and tight supply from Australia and New Zealand, increased competition for New Zealand sheepmeat.

Mutton was in short supply internationally to drive improved values for sub-primal cuts of lamb beginning in mid-2016-17, and this lifted the overall average value of lamb exports.

Total beef exports exceeded $3b, up 14 per cent on 2016-17 and were up 17 per cent on the five-year average.

The average value of beef exports has remained strong since the 2014-15 season, driven by demand from the United States for lean manufacturing beef.

However, last year China overtook the United States as New Zealand’s largest red meat export market by value and volume.

China accounted for one-third of New Zealand’s red meat exports, increasing its share of our beef exports and taking on more lamb and mutton.

The US remains New Zealand’s largest beef export market, but its total share of beef decreased two percentage points to 47 per cent.

The widespread rain provided welcome relief for dryland farmers and provide savings for irrigators. Looking at the Canterbury records it seems the rainfall was patchy with more falling north of the Rakaia than south.

One thing everybody felt was the cold.

Fortunately, lambing is all but over although some calves freshly weaned looked to be feeling it.

A similar story is being related to the sheep saleyards. Good numbers coming through on falling, although sound, prices.

No new season’s lambs have found their way to the yards as yet but can’t be too far away. Comments are that Canterbury has had a top lambing on the back of a good autumn for mating and with the generally mild winter and early spring leading to high survivability among the lambs.

Processors are calling for those with ewes to send to the works to get moving as if they want them processed soon as priority is going to be given to the lambs. Presumably to beat mature teeth eruption and the resulting drop in value.

Markets

Everything has gone in the wrong direction for those selling livestock. Almost all schedules have moved down for the last few weeks and some categories are starting to look a bit sickly. The only fall that has been welcomed is the international price of oil, although it may be a while before reflected in what is being paid at the bowser.

Beef

The manufacturing grades of beef have been the most heavily affected with M Cow now back into the $3 territory. Processors are blaming the high amounts of pork and poultry going onto the markets in the USA for the lack of interest in the key market which for lean beef (New Zealand style) means a five year low has been reached.

Saleyard prices seem to have passed their peak with declines being experienced for the second week in a row. The peak appears to have been reached earlier this year with processor support dropping off. Numbers coming through are relatively high at all sale centres. This is a likely response to a drier summer being forecasted and farmers being pro-active in de-stocking

Not a good story at last weeks Christchurch wool sale either with drops on most classes of wool, despite most being of good quality.

Venison

A 10 cent drop here also, taking some of the gloss off. Although farmers will still be pretty happy at current levels.

Dairy

Looking at the Oceania dairy price site, the international price average has dropped by 3.3 per cent since the previous week although WMP dropped by less than 2 per cent. However, when the lift in the New Zealand verses the US dollar equation is considered then the average drop increases to 4.66 per cent which is starting to get concerning.

Valerie Young – all round sportswoman

By Kathleen Stringer Valerie Isobel Sloper was born in 1937 in Ashburton. She and her siblings attended Rokeby School from 1947 to 1950, and before that Lauriston School. The farming family moved around later farming at Hinds and Rakaia.

From an early age, Valerie loved sports and physical activity.

In Essays in Pioneer Women, Susan Wall says she preferred footy with the boys to most activities at school.

The highlight of each year for Valerie was the County Sports days held at the Ashburton Domain, where pupils from all the schools in the area would compete.

In 1952 Valerie was sent to

Christchurch at attend the Technical School there.

So isolated was the area Valerie’s parents lived in, that there was no school bus to take their children to Ashburton, so going to the city for secondary education was the easier option.

Although she originally lived with her aunt, being in a big city was difficult for the country girl, but it allowed Valerie to take an activity part in the sporting life of Christchurch.

Wall says Valerie buried herself in sport – taking part in a variety of events and eventually became champion of almost everything.

In her last year at college she boarded at the school hostel. By a quirk of fate, perhaps, the school grounds were very close to where

the technical school athletic club trained.

This gave Valerie the wonderful opportunity to meet Valedmars Breidis, an ex-Olympic trainer. It was this man who recognised her potential and directed her into specific events such as running and discus.

Valerie competed in many meetings, but always returned home to Ashburton to compete. Her proud parents followed their daughter around to view her progress.

By 1955, when Valerie was just 18, she had been selected to compete at the Melbourne Olympics.

Valerie competed in every Olympic and Commonwealth Games from 1956 to 1966.

She won gold at Perth, Jamaica and Cardiff, plus achieved other

highly-ranked placings.

A comeback saw her obtain silver in the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch.

In 1976 she became chaperone to the women athletics at the Montreal Olympics.

In 1961 Valerie Sloper married Ashburton athlete Ross Young.

Her first child, born in 1967, and the three other children that followed, encouraged Valerie to review her involvement in sport.

From being self-focused and always wanting the win, Valerie realised the important part sport could play in improving the quality of family and community life.

In 1973 Valerie was appointed to the National Council for Recreation and Sport and later was part of the organising committee that in-

stigated the Come Alive campaign.

Valerie believed that we should all actively take part in leisure, not particularly because it is healthy or practical but because it is fun. She said that the key to the Come Alive campaign was really to improve the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders.

In 1987 she was awarded an OBE for her services to sport and was one of the first inductees into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame.

To date, Valerie can claim to have won the most gold medals of any New Zealand competitor at the Commonwealth Games.

She has won more New Zealand titles than any other athlete, including 18 in the discus and 17 in the shot put, she also won the pentathlon title twice.

Honouring the Fallen During the period of the First World War, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return — almost 450 from Ashburton were killed.

The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 — the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men.

The Ashburton Museum, with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains, has erected in front of the Museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag.

An original flag is on display in the Museum.

Barbecue beer ribs

1kg NZ pork rib rack – American style 60g brown sugar 2t smoked paprika 2t ground cumin 2t mustard powder 1t flaky sea salt 1t cracked black pepper 2T apple cider vinegar 200ml Behemoth CHUR NZ Pale Ale (or similar) ■ In a bowl, mix the brown sugar with the spices (smoked paprika, ground cumin, mustard powder, salt and pepper) until well combined.

■ Rub the NZ pork ribs as a whole rack with the sugar/spice mixture – ensuring to cover all sides.

■ Place in a deep dish, cover with plastic wrap and set aside for 45 minutes.

■ While the ribs are marinating, set up your barbecue/smoker and preheat to 190°C.

■ Let cook with the lid closed for 7 minutes either side.

■ Place the ribs bone-side-up on a chopping board and slice between the bones.

Eels want Hayne back Parramatta have told Jarryd Hayne they still want him to be at the Eels next year despite the NRL star turning up the heat on the club for a new contract. Spencer wins Wakanui Brent Spencer showed his strength over the rolling roads of Wakanui on Sunday to claim line victory in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s race on Sunday.

The back markers made the most of the tougher conditions to work their way through the field to claim the major spoils in the Brad Hudson Flooring/ Mathieson Chartered Accountants 38km handicap event, with

Spencer holding out his comarkers on the finish line to secure the victory and fastest time honours, riding the course in 54.05 minutes.

Tony Ward delivered his usual gutsy ride to second place and second fastest time, while Myles O’Donnell ensured his winter training was not put to waste, producing a top effort to claim the final podium position.

Sam Clements-Stewart, Craig Roulston and Doug Coley rounded out the top six, while Nigel Douglas was close behind and took the third fastest time spoils.

The juniors and division two riders contested a 14 kilometre handicap event and Zoe Spillane, fresh from competing in the junior Tour of Southland, rode a solid race to take out the victory

and fastest time honours, covering the distance in 29.30 minutes.

First time starter Ben Pearson dug deep to secure the secondplace spoils, while division 2 honours went to Janette Hooper in a tight finish with Debbie Skinner.

Next week the club will contest a 45km handicap event around the Dawsons Road block.

Manly skipper Daly Cherry-Evans has offered his support to the prospect of Des Hasler returning to Brookvale, describing him as a formative character in his career. Hasler’s management is negotiating with the NRL club, with Sea Eagles chairman Scott Penn confirming Hasler is a contender to take over the NRL coaching job from Trent Barrett. Cherry-Evans is the only remaining member of the Manly side that Hasler guided to victory in the 2011 grand final.

Ferns no one-hit wonders, says Langman

By Cheree Kinnear The Silver Ferns may have ticked off a win against the Australian Diamonds but the improved national side now face an even bigger challenge – backing it up.

Dominating the court in Sunday’s third Constellation Cup test match at Hamilton’s Claudelands Arena, the Ferns put an end to their nine-match skid against the Diamonds to stun the World Champions with a decisive 11goal victory.

Not allowing the Diamonds to get ahead at any stage of the trans-Tasman clash, the Ferns soared to their first significantly positive result since their disastrous Commonwealth Games

campaign – showcasing exciting potential under the reign of new head coach Noeline Taurua.

However, it wasn’t all smiles after the clash from both Taurua and Silver Ferns captain Laura Langman with the pair well aware of the challenge ahead and improvements that need to be made.

Although delighted to have finally claimed the elusive win, Langman was wary of the Silver Ferns’ ‘one-hit wonder’ reputation and said the final test on Thursday was an opportunity for the newlook side to prove it wrong.

“It’s an opportunity for us to put a stake in the ground and get a measure of what we need to do to be consistent,” Langman said.

“The Silver Ferns have been

renowned for being one-hit wonders and that’s certainly something we want to address in the group.

“For me, the win, I would describe it as reinforcement and an opportunity to back it up.”

Similarly, Taurua was quick to identify areas she wanted to address deeming that the win was far from a solid 60-minute performance – despite how things looked on the surface.

“The win will give us huge selfbelief knowing that we can foot it with the Australians but also you know your back to business,” Taurua said.

“I think it’s a great testing for us that we don’t get carried away with ourselves and that we can still go

“I don’t know that things are on track at this stage, it’s too early to call, I think it does show that the things we are doing off court, things about strategy, our team

meetings, all the detail underneath, it does work.

“It is consistency, being able to back up from what we did previously ... I’m absolutely rapt that we’re still in the game but we’ve got to be able to put the deeds out on court and put it into action and time will tell whether we can back ourselves up.”

Sunday’s result put the Silver Ferns back in contention for the Constellation Cup but they will need to deliver at least a massive 14-goal win on Thursday night to pull it off.

The Ferns travel to Wellington for what will need to be an all-ornothing performance as they seek to claim the title for the first time since 2012.

Muster day for sevens girls They’ve got a coach and a playing kit, now all the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union (MCRU) needs is girls keen to give sevens a shot.

The union is hosting a muster day for prospective under-15 girls tomorrow and has invited a very special guest along to help out, as the hunt for players to form the region’s first under-15 girls’ sevens side continues.

MCRU rugby development officer Jason Ree said Kendra Cocksedge, a member of the World Cup winning Black Ferns side, would be at the muster day to lend a hand and give helpful hints and playing tips.

She was bringing a couple of friends too, in fellow Black Ferns squad members Pip Love and Grace Brooker, and Ree was hopeful Mid Canterbury’s budding young female sevens

exponents would make the most of what was a wonderful opportunity to learn from the best.

The aim of the muster day was to pick a team to represent Mid Canterbury at the first provincial South Island girls’under-15 sevens tournament in Timaru in November.

To be eligible girls had to have been born between December 31, 2003, and January 1, 2005. Players would also need to be available for the tournament weekend, November 11 and 12.

The muster day will be held at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds, off Brucefield Avenue, from 4.30pm until 6pm.

Long list of bolters in ABs squad Auckland’s Dalton Papalii is the only uncapped player in Steve Hansen’s 32-man squad to tour Europe but there could still be more new All Blacks on the tour.

Papalii will be joined by seven other uncapped players who will be part of a wider squad of 19 players as part of the Japan leg of the tour.

Papalii gets his opportunity after an impressive Investec Super Rugby season followed by a strong Mitre 10 Cup season.

He comes in following injuries to Sam Cane (neck surgery) and the unavailability of Shannon Frizell and Tasman loose forward contender Jordan Taufua.

Loose forward Matt Todd has also been selected after being granted an exemption by the New Zealand Rugby (NZR).

The Board noted his significant long service to New Zealand Rugby and the fact he is contracted to return to New Zealand and the Crusaders in 2019.

Meanwhile, a number of All Blacks make eagerly-awaited returns from injury.

Dayne Beams hasn’t, and won’t, officially request a trade to Collingwood but the Brisbane star would like to play for the Magpies from next year. Tour card for Voke Aucklands Nick Voke has won his third PGA TOUR Series-China in four events at the season-ending Clearwater Bay Open to bank $80,000 and finish third on the Order of Merit to secure his 2019 Web.com Tour card. Starting the final day five strokes clear, Voke shot a third consecutive three-under 67 for a 14-under total at The Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club.

Keino a suspect Kenyan running great Kip Keino has been named as a suspect in a corruption investigation in his home country and given until today to report to police or face arrest. The 78-year-old Keino, the former head of Kenya’s Olympic committee, is one of seven ex-officials who will face charges of corruption, abuse of office and embezzlement relating to the misappropriation of more than $545,000 ($NZ765,000) that was meant to be used to fund Kenyan athletes at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Kenya’s public prosecutor said.

A blistering run helped Swannanoa’s Ryan Kiesanowski to one of the big titles up for grabs at Saturday’s Rakaia Salmon Run multisport event.

Kiesanowski was one of around 300 people who turned out to tackle one of the seven events that made up the Salmon Run – an event organised by the Rakaia Lions and a team of hard-working volunteers – and took out the multisport category, completing the 36km cycle, 14km kayak and 11.5km run in 2.24.53 hours.

Kiesanowski was the only runner to cover the 11.5km distance in under 40 minutes, giving him a buffer on the rest of the field.

Just over a minute back in second place was Christchurch’s Nathan Peterson, while another Christchurch competitor – Bevan Jones – was third.

The first Ashburton athlete back to the Rakaia Domain was Matthew Clough in sixth.

For the women, Akaroa’s Kate Crook crossed the line first in 2.51.38 hours, with Christchurch’s Rachel Baker second and Temuka’s Rosie Fitzgerald third.

Jackie Dwyer was the first Ashburton woman home in 10th.

World Superbike champion Jonathan Rea has made history after completing a double success in Argentina yesterday to extend his winning streak to 10 successive victories. The 31-year-old, having also won the opening race on Saturday, came home first again in race two to clinch his fifth double on the spin for Kawasaki. Pentathlon eyes Melbourne Taranaki trainer John Wheeler hasn’t given up hope of getting Pentathlon into next month’s Gr.1 $7 million Melbourne Cup, but he has come up with a leftfield alternative if the talented stayer misses a start in the 3200m Flemington feature.

Pentathlon finished ninth in the 2016 Melbourne Cup and just failed in a last-ditch attempt to get a start in the race last year when third in the Gr.3 Lexus Stakes (2500m).

This year Pentathlon is currently sitting 58th in order of entry for the Melbourne Cup and Wheeler knows the seven-yearold son of Pentire has to lift his game in his next couple of starts to sneak into the big one.

Pentathlon was having just his second start since being runnerup to Gobstopper in the Gr.3 New Zealand Cup (3200m) at Riccarton 11 months ago when he was a creditable sixth to Nymph Monte in Saturday’s South Taranaki

“I thought he went super,” Wheeler said.

“He’d only had one race since the New Zealand Cup last year and I’d struggled to get the condition off him. He’s a robust horse and, even though he’d done a lot of work and is very fit, he’s not race fit.

“He also had a few hiccups, like a cracked splint bone which stopped him running on the second day at Hastings.

After four days he was okay, but he really needed Saturday’s run.

“I’m confident that he’s close to his best and I’m toying with the idea of going to the Moonee Valley Gold Cup then on to the Lexus, like we did last year.

“I haven’t given up hope that he can sneak into the Melbourne Cup.” Pentathlon also holds a nomination for the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup at Riccarton on November 17, though it

It is worth $300,000 over the extreme distance of 4600m and confined to Australian and New Zealand-bred horses.

It is being held as part of the 100th anniversary of the 1918 end of the First World War and in recognition of the Australian Light Horsemen, their mounts and a famous ruse employed nearing the end of the war.

As a decoy to a major offensive against the Turkish Empire, the Australian Light Horsemen staged a race meeting with the main race being the Jericho Cup over three miles through the desert sands.

It is planned to re-run the modern-day Jericho Cup annually and Wheeler, who is always proud to fly the flag for the Kiwis, would love to represent New Zealand in the novel event.

KONA still a killer Braden Currie finished fifth in his second attempt at the Ironman World Championships in Kona.

On a day when course records collapsed around him, Methven’s Braden Currie dug unbelievably deep to finish in fifth place at the 2018 Ironman World Championships.

Currie crossed the finish line as the sixth fastest individual pro male in the history of the event – a 226.26km ruthless race on the island of Hawaii in Kailua-Kona which extracted every last ounce of energy out of the globe’s fittest athletes.

Red Bull’s Currie gave it his absolute all to cross the line in 8.04.41 hours, in what was only his second time contesting the gruelling event which took the world’s top professional athletes many attempts to master.

Finishing the best of the Kiwis, Currie just held off American Matt Russell by four seconds, exerting an effort so great that he needed an intravenous drip in-

serted straight after he finished.

“I absolutely gave it everything I had in the tank (on Sunday).

“To be honest I’m really proud of the result. I held tough. I held in there.

“At the end of the day, I tried to go for the win and that was what I was there for,” Currie said.

German athlete Patrick Lange was the repeat Ironman World Champion, celebrating the event’s 40th anniversary by smashing his own course record and becoming the first person to break 8 hours in Kona, clocking a 7:52:39.

Bart Aernouts of Belgium was second, achieving this career high in his seventh attempt at Kona and also breaking eight hours in 7:56:41.

Great Britain’s David McNamee was third with a time of 8:01:09, also under the previous course record.

The race began with the out and

back swim, and while Currie had been making gains in his swimming recently, as any professional athlete would tell you, sometimes on race day, it just doesn’t go to plan.

“I had a really bad swim start and got stuck over on the right hand side. [Josh] Amberger and [Javier] Gomez and all those guys got well away from us.

“I ended up pretty much swimming solo leading the second pack. I had to swim quite hard.

“We didn’t lose too much time in the end but it wasn’t the swim I was hoping for.

“I was hoping to be right up the front.”

Currie was 1.17 minutes down on the swim leader coming out of the water, which was enough of a deficit for him to have to push hard on the 180.2km bike ride.

“I felt pretty good on the bike but I knew I probably didn’t have

the power of those other bike specialist guys.

In the final kilometres of the bike ride there were 25 pro men within nine minutes of each other and Currie was 11th.

“I rode really well and just kept on top of nutrition and hydration. The back of the course was a lot easier than normal and there wasn’t much headwind.

“We all moved really fast.”

Accidentally leaving his watch in transition, Currie headed out on the 42.4km run and while he pushed the pace, never knew when he was facing off it.

Despite that, by the 8.5km mark he’d moved into third.

By the 32km split the heat was beginning to wear Currie down and he slipped to fourth behind McNamee, and he was neck and neck with eventual fourth place finisher Tim O’Donnell for several kilometres in the final stages

of the race before the American eventually slipped away.

“I love racing at the front. I love seeing what is humanly possible of me.

“I probably could have eased up and played a safe card and kept a better pace.

“I wanted to see if I could race Patrick – at the end of the day he’s the best in the world right now and he’s shown how dominant he is.

“I wanted to put some pressure on him and just see what happened.

“He is a step above and he showed me his cards pretty soon – about 15km into the run he just started pulling away.

“I wasn’t going to stick with it.

“You never know until you try and it was lesson learnt for me.

“It was good fun and I definitely don’t regret it because I’m proud of the result,” Currie said.
