Ratepayers are calling on Ashburton’s district councillors to stop stalling, stop making excuses and to do a deal with St John over the future ownership of a Burnett Street section. St John needs the councilowned section to access the rear of its Tancred Street headquarters.
It plans to extend that building to accommodate extra ambulances and staff but needs access over the section for returning ambulances. If it can’t have guaranteed access, it’s likely to relocate away from the town centre. The council and St John have been in discussions over a possible lease or sale of the section since June. Nothing has hap-
pened. At a meeting to which all councillors were invited, but just three and mayor Donna Favel turned up, St John staff made it clear they couldn’t pay market price for the land but without it they couldn’t extend their building. A story in Thursday’s Guardian drew a huge response from readers. Virtually every commentator
was critical of the council and virtually every one made it clear the land should either be gifted to St John or leased, long term, for a peppercorn rental. Councillor Selwyn Price was at the meeting and he is one councillor who was prepared to nail his colours to the mast early in the St John debate. the land to St John. Yes there could be issues around the original status of the land, but if that can be cleared, then essentially the council would be giving property owned by ratepayers to the organisation.
