Share plan bid to combat drought BY SUSAN SANDYS

North Canterbury farmers, struggling with the on-going impact of drought, are asking Mid Canterbury farmers for help with this year’s lambing through commercial share farming arrangements. An estimated 80,000 ewes have been sent from the dry region for wintering throughout Canterbury and Otago, and as spring approaches farmers fear a lack of feed will force them to lamb off their farms. North Canterbury Federated Farmers meat and fibre chairman Dan Hodgen said yesterday the large number of ewes sent south was indicative of “how tough and how tight it is here”.

It was the worst drought of modern farming times with only a short window of time to grow feed before conditions were unfavourable for lambing, he said. Mr Hodgen acknowledged the unprecedented nature of the appeal, but said “some of the best ideas are borne out of desperation”. He asked Mid Canterbury farmers to consider share farming arrangements, where they could lamb ewes and receive a weekly payment until they could be transported back or perhaps take no payment but instead retain a share of the lambs. It could hopefully be a win-win situation, particularly as there may be some extra dairy grazing areas free following a downturn in that indus-

try, he said. The affected farmers had worked hard to improve the genetic stock of their flock and would not want to sell them off at low prices to meat works, Mr Hodgen said. “If you think it may be an option, talk to your agents and see what the logistics of it are.” North Canterbury Drought Response Committee co-ordinator Angela Hogg believes there are quite a few experienced farmers around Mid Canterbury who may be able to assist with the share farm arrangement. Sending donated feed to the area had been a “great morale booster”, but no amount of feed would solve the situation and long-term commercial solutions needed to be found, she said.
