Cows disappear from dairy farm BY MICHELLE NELSON

$85k stolen off mum P6
Rustlers appear to have stolen 36 dairy cows worth $70,000 from a Mid Canterbury farm at the height of the milking season. The kiwi-cross cattle, representing about 5 per cent of the herd, have vanished from Jill and David Quigley’s farm near Mayfield within the past two weeks. “They were there one day and gone the next,” Mrs Quigley said. “The first sign something was amiss was the drop in (milk) production figures.” The theft would have required either
trucking or walking the animals out, but transport companies have no record of shifting stock from the property and noone has owned up to having acquired an extra three dozen cows. The consensus is the cows were trucked off the property in two separate loads. Mrs Quigley said there was no chance the cows had escaped if by chance a gate had been left open. It was not in their nature to roam far and more animals would have probably wandered out had that been the case, she said. “If that had happened they would have been found, they are creatures of habit,”
she said. Aside from the audacity of the theft, the welfare of the animals and not knowing whether they are alive or dead is also of concern to the Quigleys and their farm manager. “It’s a huge hole in our herd and the worry is the welfare of the cows, and that they are treated properly wherever they are – those cows give a lot to us,” she said. Have you seen anything? Anyone who has noticed any cattle movements in the vicinity of Tanks and Wallace roads should contact the Ashburton Police Station on 303-8400 or anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.
